(yes, some horses naturally love to run, or even love to run faster than other horses, but i’ve never seen a horse in a paddock ask to be put down, whipped, have their tongue tied etc)

(no, i don’t mind people drinking, but it’s no excuse for bad behaviour)
— humourless wankers in ugly outfits

Today is Victoria's second-most ridiculous public holiday (the most ridiculous is the day *before* the AFL Grand Final). Annoyingly the public hol also leaked into yesterday - it was a normal workday but the cafe I wanted to go to was closed. (Sigh) I hate public holidays.

It’s ‘Nup to the cup’ for me. It’s far more interesting to watch the National Party self-combust into a pretend reality with their rejection of net-zero, supported by a well rehearsed string of lies, even as tennis ball-sized hail smashes southern Queensland. But the greatest lie was hearing David ‘Spivweasel’ Littleproud smoothly claim the move would not put any pressure on his Liberal coalition leader Sussan Ley. Replace the horses with their millionaire and billionaire owners. Jockey on the back with a whip. Strict limits on the number of whippings the owner can receive during a race, say 50, we're not animals.
Same 3,200m distance, obviously allow a couple of hours for the race to complete.
Imagine the TV ratings, the size of the tote!

I always liked the Melbourne Cup as a big Melbourne cultural moment, but the animal deaths and the gambling has taken the shine off it.

I think it's strange that people in the USA regard today — election day — as a regular workday, but here in Victoria we have a public holiday today for a horse race — Melbourne Cup.
