amazing ligne claire style re-imagining of the Ultima Underworld box cover art by Sousa (/user/Ok_Caterpillar_1892)
denis loubet's original cover art is incredible enough, but re-imagined in a soft tintin style, it has such a wholesome feel

when i was a kid, buying a new DOS game in Canada was usually in the $60-$90 range and would take me months to save up for. Ultima VIII: Pagan was an $80 game at launch here. i owned very, very few new games for that reason.
but $20 in my wallet often meant i had *just* enough to buy a game from a bargain bin.
in the mid 90s, EA released "CD-ROM Classics" editions of several games from the Origin and Bullfrog catalogues. they were $20 each, and came without the physical feelies (cloth map, the fancy manual, objects, etc).
collectors today only care about the feelies, and have entirely forgotten just how exciting it was to have get a bunch of great games in a compilation pack for twenty bucks in 1996. in the end, i played these two games for hundreds of hours, and they took me through my high school years into my university years.
sadly, 20+ years ago I decided that compilation packs were beneath me, and that collecting the "real" big boxes was way cooler. i donated the boxes and regretted it ever since.
today, i met up with an older fellow who had bought these both in 1997, with the intention of "some day playing them in his retirement". 30 years later as a retiree, he never got around to it, and now just wanted the space back on his shelves. i am beyond thankful he saved them 🙏
the funny thing was that he had printed off the exact U8 hint guide i also downloaded from ftp.ea.com in 1997. i found it tucked inside of the U7 box.

The spell system in Richard Garriott's DND1 is pretty basic in some ways. I decided to change the spell names. Then I got to thinking about how to mix it up a bit, so a player has to think more. So I added damage types.
I extended the data for each monster to have various flags for how resistant they are to various damage types; ice, fire, lightning, holy, dark.
Also, I added an effect. If you cast "Create Wall" on the square a monster is on, the monster is crushed.
Everything is still very primitive, but it is fun to work on and expand.

BTW, this entire thing is just a single html page. You can download the page and play it locally, as there is no server required to store data.

Richard Garriott Getting Ultima’s Copyrights Back
It's been going around the gaming bigsites (PC Gamer, Time Extension, Kotaku, Eurogamer and others) that due to a quirk of US copyright law Richard Garriott, who begin the Ultima series in June 1981, may finally be getting back the rights to his now-ancient series from the corporate behemot

til, despite playing Crusader a dozen times since 1995: there is a hidden easter egg room where the demigod Pyros from Ultima VIII: Pagan has been summoned. when you enter the room, Tony Zurovec appears in the top left corner.
i assume the easter egg is there because Ultima VIII's isometric tile engine was used (and modified) for Crusader.

Looks like Richard Garriott is going to try and regain copyright to the Ultima series next year.

This is still, very much, a work in progress, but now, you can actually play through ascii maps. I worked on passing the ascii layout to the javascript port of Richard Garriott's DND1.
So I made an ascii representation of the first dungeon in the D&D red box. And I can now pass that to the DND1 engine, and you can play it. I mean, it is not going to be the same experience. It does not implement a bunch of features that would need to be done to have static monster encounters, and scripted events and other things like that. But, maybe, one day, I will get around to enhancing it.
EDIT Also, this means you can go make your own maps. You can see the above map in the ascii to svg tool.

Those excited about Richard Garriott getting #Ultima back obviously don't remember how his $15M Kickstarter spiritual successor went... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMxjwtxn6NI

I have my issues with Garriott's worldview and Shroud of the Avatar had some problems, but this is another one of those whitepill scenarios like Perifractic buying Commodore!
Absolutely insane news. Ultima is THE grandfather of the modern computer RPG, alongside Might & Magic and Wizardry. Having this series back in its' creator's hands and possibly getting some new titles in the series would be outstanding!
