  4. EXCLUSIVE Santa Column: The Quest to Fit a New Doorbell 🔔

Last time out, Santa fitted new front doors to the factory. This time out, a new doorbell was in order. Father Christmas categorises this as his “quest” to find the ideal doorbell and his obsession with his quest turns out to be ever so slightly deranged. Indeed.

    Santa Seeks a New Doorball

Santa is a on a quest to find the ideal doorball. With the new factory gates fitted out back, rather than at the front (because of a technicality), Santa needs something to indicate to the factory that there is a bastard at the door who needs either slaying hideously, shooing away, or stealing their property. It needs to be a really, really, really, really, really good one. Like, when some communist or workshy freeloader presses the button it needs to COMMAND RESPECT and sound out as it is Satan braying from the heavens that someone is at the door and Markus, my head elf, needs to answer the, aforementioned, door and get the goods and/or slay the communist.

Thus, Santa got on the case to get the doorball. Santa looked up a company on The World Wide Internets and rang the doorball company over the phone, the company is located in Bolton of Greater Manchester. This is the conversation Santa endured.

“HELLO! Is this the doorball company?!” I bellowed down the phone.

    “Wot?!”

    “THE DOORBALL COMPANY?!” Santa roared.

After a long silence the response came, “We sell doorbells, mate.”

“THAT IS WHAT SANTA SAID! GIVE ME THE DOORBALL!” I roared once more.

“Mate, cram a sock in it with t’ shoutin’, what do you want?!?”

“A doorball for my Santa factory! I need one so when some communist or workshy freeloader presses the button it COMMANDS RESPECT and sounds out hard and long as if it is Satan braying from the heavens that someone is at the door and Markus, my head elf, needs to answer the, aforementioned, door and get the goods and/or slay the communist.”

The guy hung up on Santa after that statement and, outraged, I immediately went and put him on my official naughty list. A vast list condemning bastard SOBs to a Christmas 2026 with no presents. Serves them right! This was my note:

NAUGHTY LIST ENTRY 451,342,123: Doorball customer service guy. USELESS CUSTOMER SERVICE did not help Santa, did not get doorball, made Santa angry. NO PRESENTS.

That’s him condemned to a rubbish Christmas 2026 and he only has himself to blame.

The Quest for a Ringing Implement

Dissatisfied and dangerous following the customer service incident, Santa began drinking sherry. Santa had a good long think about stuff that makes ringing noises. This is the list I came up with, with some help from a stoned Rudolph and the odd manic bray from Kenneth the gaffer walrus:

    • Bells
    • Electronics
    • Cymbals, gongs, triangles
    • GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh
      • Santa requested further feedback on what Kenneth meant by that bray, will report back when he makes more sense later
    • Struck anvils, crystal glassware
    • Harps
    • Doorballs

Santa got Markus, my head elf, on the case regarding the “GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh” statement by Kenneth as I reckon he’s onto something there. Walruses know how to make a lot of noise, so perhaps it is in that slobbering oaf of a monster Santa can find a solution to this front door situation.

“Sir, Kenneth doesn’t know what anything like that is, he makes those noises because he’s a walrus and that’s what they do on an animalistic front.” Said Markus.

“NONSENSE, Markus. Do you want demoting!? Do you want Kenneth to take your place!?” I threatened the little bastard.

    “Well, I wouldn’t mind it for a…”

“NONESENSE! You’re just jealous because Kenneth had a better idea than you. Study it! Study that statement! By the end of the day, I want a 10,000 word report on what GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh is and how it can be used as a doorball implement. GET TO IT NOW, YOU SOB!” Santa then pelted the empty sherry bottle at the nearest wall and it shattered into a billion pieces.

    Markus’ Findings Regarding “GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh”

At the end of the day, Markus returned with a 9,145 word report on the statement. Santa immediately gave Markus, my head elf, a pay cut for not hitting the mandatory 10,000 words. The report itself was confusing because it had some big words in it Santa didn’t really understand, plus some statistics Santa didn’t really understand. So, Santa booted up my AI wife B2C AI Wife Production Centre Service Solution Platform Generator Ltd. and ran the report through her and had she condensed into the language of a 5 year old so I could understand it.

“Darling! Markus, your head elf, has come to the conclusion (“the end”, a kind of decision) that the statement (“GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh”) by Kenneth the gaffer walrus was the sound a walrus makes in an attempt to attract a mate, as it is mating season. I hope that makes sense, sweetums. 😘”

BREAKTHROUGH! Santa duly had Kenneth the walrus replicate that GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh noise, which I had Markus, my head elf, record on a recording device. The noise was the installed into a doorball, which Santa purchased from the shop in Bolton of Greater Manchester, which was flown in via helictoper, crash landed, exploded, and luckily the doorball survived. Double thumbs up! The sound effect was installed and we got on with our lives.

    Walrus-Based Anarchy

After 24 hours of the new doorball being put to use (75 times from various product deliveries and 35 times for various Bolsheviks and communists whom were promptly tasered), something unexpected happened. Markus, my head elf, ran another report the next day, but it turns out the “GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh” mating signal call that played out very loudly from the front door acted as a mating signal call across the North Pole.

Santa got up one morning hungover to all hell to find 1,500 walruses outside the factory gates engaged in what can ONLY be classed as an orgy! The indecency made Santa vomit (or maybe that was the hangover).

With walruses more or less as far as the eye could see, Santa hit the bottle with a vengeance. Then I called an emergency meeting in my Santa office.

“Markus! Where the hell is Kenneth!? Why isn’t he at this meeting!?”

“He’s engaged in the activities outside, sir.”

    “Oh, the depravity!” I bellowed.

    “Indeed, sir.” Markus squeaked.

There was only one thing for it. Santa had Markus dig out the old water cannons from the basement of factory unit 6. We got the elves to head out back and blast the walruses with those, disseminating them in a chaotic and enraged frenzy. In the stampede that followed, the walruses pulverised through various factory walls, clobbered off factory implements, and triggered multiple fires (the new front doors and doorball also went up in a ball of flames). The elves used the water cannons to douse the flames, but this is a significant setback for Christmas 2026! Markus has calculated we have 2% of our production targets met.

    Worse was to follow.

Kenneth has hit it off with a walrus broad and insisted through manic braying Santa hire her into the workforce. He wants to marry her and they want many walrus babies. Santa tried to say no, but Kenneth pulverised me into the floor and broke one of my Santa legs… this hassle wasn’t worth it, so I later got her to slobber over a contract of employment and deemed that as a valid signature.

She’s called Linda. She’ll introduce herself in next week’s column. God help us.

  5. The Enlightenment

What you were taught about the Enlightenment is a lie. You were told it was a polite intellectual movement—coffeehouse debates, salon conversations, gentle progress.

The Enlightenment was a war. It was fought with printed pamphlets, banned encyclopedias, muskets, guillotines, and the corpses of priests. Its enemy was not merely ignorance; it was the alliance of throne and altar—the fusion of absolute monarchy and institutional religion that had held humanity in chains for 1370 years.

If the American Revolution had not happened, if the French Revolution had been crushed, the Enlightenment would have failed. Its ideas would have remained what its enemies always called them: the idle fantasies of a few deranged intellectuals. Kepler’s laws would have buried. And humanity would still be a hostage—to religion, to colonialism, to slavery, to the divine right of kings.

    3. The Unfinished War

    The World Before

Before the Enlightenment, The World was a prison. Its architecture was theological. The divine right of kings was not metaphor—it was the constitutional principle of every monarchy. The Catholic Church and its Protestant rivals controlled education, censored thought, and maintained inquisitions that could imprison, torture, or burn anyone who questioned the official narrative.

The masses were kept illiterate by design: a literate population might read the wrong books. Colonialism was justified as “bringing the cross to heathens“. Slavery was defended from pulpits as “the natural order ordained by Noah’s curse“.

The system was total. It had no room for dissent. When Giordano Bruno suggested an infinite universe, they burned him alive in 1600. When Galileo reaffirmed heliocentrism, they forced him to kneel and recant. The message was clear: the supernatural narrative was not negotiable. It was enforced by death.

    From Kepler to Diderot

The first cracks appeared in astronomy. Johannes Kepler—a man who lived through the chaos of the Thirty Years’ War—discovered that planets moved in ellipses according to mathematical laws. He did not set out to destroy theology. But his work, demonstrated that the universe operated by discoverable, material laws, not by divine whim.

Isaac Newton completed the picture: universal gravitation, a clockwork cosmos. The philosophical war began in earnest in the mid‑eighteenth century.

Diderot‘s Letter on the Blind (1749) was the first published work to support atheism. A blind mathematician on his deathbed, rejects the priest’s God: “If you want me to believe in God, you must make Him touch me.” The authorities understood the danger. Diderot was arrested and imprisoned in the dungeon of Vincennes. He emerged scarred, but not silenced. He learned to work underground. What was needed was organization—and, eventually, revolution.

    The Revolutions

The American Revolution (1776) was the first political victory of Enlightenment ideas. It was not a clean war—it was fought by slaveholders who spoke of liberty—but it was a breach in the wall. For the first time, a modern republic declared that government derived its authority from the consent of the governed, not from God. The Constitution enshrined the separation of church and state. There would be no American pope, no American king.

The effect was electric in Europe. Here was proof that a nation could exist without divine right. Here was a model that the French radicals would study obsessively. Without the American victory, the French Revolution might never have dared to begin.

The same year that American colonists declared independence, a Bavarian professor named Adam Weishaupt founded a secret society: the Illuminati. Its purpose was to overthrow the alliance of throne and the church, to eradicate religion from human civilization, and to replace it with reason, science, and human emancipation.

The Illuminati grew to thousands of members. They were suppressed by Bavarian authorities in 1785, their leaders exiled and scattered—to France, to America, to the revolutionary underground that was already gathering.

When the French Revolution erupted in 1789, the Illuminati were there.
The French Revolution was not a philosophical debate. It was a war. When the Bastille fell in 1789, it was not merely a prison being liberated; it was a symbol of royal and clerical tyranny collapsing.

The revolutionaries went further than the Americans ever dared. They attacked the Church directly.

In 1790, the Civil Constitution of the Clergy subordinated the French Catholic Church to the state. Priests were forced to swear allegiance. Many refused. The revolution turned on them. Churches were sacked, religious orders dissolved, church property seized.

In 1793–94, Notre‑Dame was rededicated as a Temple of Reason. Priests were hunted, arrested, executed. Thousands were killed or forced into exile.

Pope Pius VI watched in horror as the revolution devoured the French Church. In 1798, French troops invaded the Papal States, took the pope prisoner, and marched him to France. He died in captivity in 1799—a direct consequence of the war that Diderot’s ideas and the Illuminati’s organization had set in motion.

The revolution was bloody, chaotic, and contradictory. But it broke the back of clerical power in France. It proved that the Church could be fought, that its authority was not divine but political, and that it could be overthrown.

The monarchies of Europe—backed by the Church—threw everything they had at the French Revolution. They failed. From the chaos emerged Napoleon Bonaparte, a man whose early career was intertwined with the Illuminati. He consolidated the revolution’s gains while disciplining its excesses. He codified secular law in the Napoleonic Code, abolished feudalism, and spread anti‑clerical reforms across the continent.

But Napoleon was also a pragmatist. When the Illuminati faction that had helped him rose against him, he crushed them. He signed the Concordat with the Church to stabilize his rule. He delivered the death blow to the old order. The Holy Roman Empire was dissolved in 1806. The pope, after being humiliated, was brought back only as a shadow of his former power.

The war had not ended in total victory. But it had fundamentally shifted the battlefield. Religion had been forced out of the center of European politics.

The idea that a nation could exist without a state church, that a king’s authority was not divine, that slavery and colonialism were not ordained by God—these were victories.

    What if

History is not written with “What if”‘s, but this is necessary to be written.

Lets Imagine, what would happen if the enlightenment had failed.

In 1700, the world had four great empires—British, Spanish, Portuguese, and French—carved up the Americas, Africa, and Asia between them.

The Russian Empire pressed from the east, the Ottoman Empire from the south, both also ruled by the logic of divine mandate.

In China, the Dynasties justified bloodline through a fusion of Confucian hierarchy and Buddhist–Taoist cosmology. In India, the Mughals blended Islamic authority with Hindu caste structures. Japan, under the Tokugawa shogunate, enforced a rigid Buddhist–Confucian orthodoxy that made Christianity a capital crime. Oceania and the Americas were either colonized or missionized, their indigenous cosmologies crushed beneath the cross.

Every single one of these powers based its legitimacy on religion. Whether Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Muslim, Confucian, or Hindu, the formula was the same: authority came from the divine, and to challenge the ruler was to challenge the gods. The Ottoman Empire, though more tolerant through its millet system, still rested on the sultan’s role as caliph. The enemies of these empires were not ideological—they were other empires, pirates, or rebellious provinces. No major civilization had yet developed a systematic critique of religion itself as a political control system. Resistance existed—slave revolts, peasant uprisings, indigenous wars—but none aimed to dismantle the principle of divine right.

Now imagine that the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789 had failed. Imagine that the Enlightenment remained what its enemies called it: the idle fantasy of a few deranged intellectuals. What would the nineteenth century have looked like—and, more to the point, what would 2026 look like?

First, without the successful revolutions, the idea that government derives its authority from the consent of the governed, not from God, would have remained a curiosity. No wave of secularization would have swept Europe. The abolitionist movements that grew from Enlightenment natural rights would have been stillborn or crushed. Slavery would have persisted well into the twentieth century, still defended from pulpits as “the natural order ordained by Noah’s curse.” Colonialism would have continued without the anti‑colonial rhetoric that emerged from Enlightenment philosophy; the British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese empires would have held their possessions indefinitely, their legitimacy unquestioned.

Second, without the ideological breach created by the revolutions, there would have been no Lenin in 1917—because there would have been no ideological framework to challenge the tsar’s divine right and the Orthodox Church’s authority. Russia would have remained an absolute monarchy, possibly still with serfdom. The Soviet Union was a child of the Enlightenment’s war against religion. Without it, the Russian Empire might have staggered into the twentieth century unchanged, its peasants still bound to the land and to the Church.

But the most devastating consequence would have been technological. The Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century—Kepler, Galileo, Newton—had already happened. But science, left to itself, would have remained a specialized discipline, the hobby of a few gentlemen, easily suppressed if it threatened religious orthodoxy.
The industrial revolution, which began in Britain in the late eighteenth century, depended on a culture of free inquiry, on the circulation of ideas, on the protection of inventors and entrepreneurs from religious censorship. In a world where the Church still burned books and prosecuted heretics, where the Inquisition still operated, where kings still ruled by divine right, the industrial revolution would have been delayed by a century, perhaps two or three.

In 2026, following a past where the revolutions failed, where the old empires reconstituted themselves, where the alliance of throne and religion was never broken—humanity would still be chained.

    • No satellites. The space age required not only rocketry but a worldview that saw the heavens as a realm to be explored, not as the exclusive domain of God.
    • No internet. The digital age required free exchange of information, open science, and a culture that valued innovation over doctrinal purity.
    • No airplanes. Flight, like all technology, was born of a scientific culture that the Church had banned.
    • No cars. The internal combustion engine, mass production, global transportation—all would have been retarded by the same forces that condemned Galileo.

Perhaps world wars would still have come—but they would have been wars of empires. Technology would have advanced slowly, if at all. The world in 2026 would look much as it did in 1700: vast empires, rigid social hierarchies, religion enforced by law, women stoned for premarital sex, heretics burned, scientific inquiry confined to secret circles.

And the chains would be global. In Europe, the pope would still crown emperors. In the Americas, the Spanish and Portuguese empires would still rule, their missionaries still converting “heathens.” In Africa, the slave trade might have ended only when it became economically inefficient, not because of abolitionist moral conviction. In India, the British Raj would still be propped up by a blend of Anglican mission and Hindu caste collaboration. In China, a British led dynasty would rule claiming the Mandate of Heaven—still grounding power in the supernatural. The Ottoman Empire might have collapsed, succeeded by the British Empire.

No Enlightenment victory meant no escape from this global prison.

The Enlightenment needed the revolutions to survive. Ideas alone are not enough. They must be institutionalized, enforced, defended with blood. The revolutionaries of 1776 and 1789 changed the world. They built constitutions that separated church from state, they created republics that drew legitimacy from the people, and they fought—and died—to make those republics real.

The Catholic church understood this perfectly. For centuries, it had banned books, imprisoned writers, executed revolutionaries, burned perhaps a million people alive, committed genocides against “heretical” sects, and enforced colonial war crimes. It knew that ideas, once armed, could destroy its world.

The revolutions did destroy that world. They broke the back of religious political authority in the West. They provided the model that abolitionists, suffragists, anti‑colonial movements, and every subsequent wave of liberation would draw upon. Without them, humanity would still be living in the seventeenth century—technologically, politically, spiritually.

The war was necessary. It was won. And the world we live in today—with its satellites, its internet, its airplanes, its cars, its 80% of humanity free from religious enforcement—is the direct result of that victory.

    The Unfinished War

The war is not over. Religion remains a cognitive virus that still infects large portions of humanity. It continues to block scientific progress. The struggle cannot succeed while the supernatural worldview holds billions in its grip.

The Enlightenment taught a crucial lesson: that the enemy is not ignorance, but the organized institutions that enforce ignorance. It taught that victory requires the willingness to shed blood.

The Enlightenment was not a transition. It was a war. It was fought by men who went to prison for atheism, by women who carried forbidden manuscripts across borders, by secret societies that plotted the overthrow of kings and popes, and by revolutionaries who built guillotines in public squares.

Religion is still the enemy of humanity. The memory of the Enlightenment as a “transition” rather than a war is itself a form of softening, a way to domesticate the radicalism that made modern freedom possible.

The Enlightenment was the first phase of humanity’s war against its own enslavement. It was fought with blood and ink.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5zVlEywGZg

The next phase is waiting. To accelerate humanity’s ascent to Civilization Type I.

  25. I've finally started on my stone mason for the the scandinavian figure carving project, which have a theme of "craft". There's an exhibition that will start in Norway in december and then tour the Scandinavian countries for a few years. There's about 60 people that will have whittled different hand crafts. It's still open for entries from anyone in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. handverksinstituttet.no/om-oss
