  2. Spent yesterday at Boroondara Cemetery in Kew, Victoria. One of the nicest garden cemeteries I've come across in Australia. The volunteers there do an enormous job keeping it all from being swallowed up by the greenery.

  3. I'm putting this out for any Jews who feel like they don't want to criticize another denomination.

This is bullshit. There is no religious reason to bar suicides from our cemeteries. Not facilitating funerals is your choice, of course, but it's cruel to the living. What's next? Shrimp and tattoos? Meh.

"A landmark letter on #MAID, approved recently by #Toronto’s main #Orthodox #rabbinical council—also called the #VaadHaRabbanim—is sounding the alarm about what the group notes is the increasing prevalence of medically assisted death making “inroads” into the local #Jewish community. Citing the figure of 5,000 patients in #Ontario in 2023 who the council describes as being “#euthanized by medical practitioners”, the leading rabbis said they need to take steps to “curb this disturbing trend”: going forward, they will not officiate at the #funerals of MAID patients and will refuse to permit MAID patients to be buried in plots in their #synagogues#cemetery sections."

  8. Kerameikos Cemetery
    Al Purdy

So old that only traces of death remain
for death is broken with the broken stones
    as if convivial party-goers came
and talked so long to friends they stayed
to hear the night birds call their children home

All over Athens rooster voices wake
the past converses with itself and time
is like a plough that turns up yesterday
I move and all around —: the marketplace
where something tugs my sleeves as I go by

  12. It Worked! (t)

Suzie and Lyle downloaded a bunch of free witch spells from the internet. They had tried about six of them with minimal success. The seventh spell, Heads Off, was a different story, which, unfortunately, neither Suzie nor Lyle will be able to tell.

  13. Trolling (t) (B/W)

Roberto really got a kick out of the myth that vampires can't handle daylight. Add to that all the wannabe vampires, well, it sure made for some good feeding during the day and left his nights free for bingo.

The above is a fictitious story. Vampires really don't play bingo.

It was a little windy the day I shot this in The Burying Point cemetery. I kept waiting for headstones to start flying, but, I had to settle on a few leaves flittering down to lie with the dead.

  15. Ashes to ashes, corpse to #compost: #GreenWoodCemetery to offer ‘human composting’ starting in 2027

    By Kirstyn Brendlen

"In pursuit of a more eco-friendly future, Green-Wood #Cemetery is going back to basics.

"Starting next year, the storied cemetery will offer a new burial option: 'natural organic reduction,' also known as human composting.

"The process is fairly similar to run-of-the-mill composting. Bodies are sealed in specialized 'pods' on a bed of hay, straw and alfalfa. The pods — designed to regulate moisture and airflow — rock gently back and forth to help speed decomposition.

"After just 40 days, the contents of the pod break down into roughly 160 pounds of nutrient-dense soil, which will be used to support Green-Wood’s many plants and trees. "

  20. After my film, I cut through the old boneyard of Saint Cuthbert's to have a look & take pics at the festive fair & market in the nearby Princes Street Gardens.

I lasted twenty minutes before it annoyed the smeg out of me. Too loud, far too busy. I think I preferred the old bone orchard! Tombs with a Castle view!

The Jewish Cemetery in Oroville. I stopped to take a few photos in the not ideal harsh afternoon sunlight. 24. #MondayMourning: Louise the Unfortunate

No one knows Louise's real story. Legend has it that she traveled to Natchez sometime after the Civil War in search of her fiancé. For reasons unknown, she found herself stranded and husbandless.

Too proud to return home, she became a seamstress, maid, then "woman of the night." After dying in her mid-20s, a mysterious benefactor paid for her funeral and this headstone, more than what most paupers received.

  26. For #TombTuesdays. In #Aoyama #Cemetery in #Tokyo there is a section where foreigners are buried. In it, this tombstone, Annie Mary Baty, 1872-1945. I did some research; Annie, her sibling Thomas, and their mother are all buried in Aoyama. They were all born in the UK but followed to Japan when Thomas went to work as an adviser to the Japanese government in 1916, through WWII and after; their citizenship was revoked, and so they are buried here. 1/2

  27. #MondayMourning: Weeping Willow

Often found in cemeteries (planted or engraved on gravestones) and used to symbolize mourning. Their drooping branches evince sadness. Rain running down their leaves gives the appearance of crying.

They also represent adaptability and resilience. Their flexibility allows them to weather storms, and their hardiness helps them survive and regenerate. Also associated with resurrection, immortality, and life after death.

Note: There are additional interpretations of weeping willow symbolism. Asian cultures attach significance to the trees, and there are also a number of Biblical meanings. Tl;dr, weeping willows aren’t just for sadness and death!
