  2. Spent yesterday at Boroondara Cemetery in Kew, Victoria. One of the nicest garden cemeteries I've come across in Australia. The volunteers there do an enormous job keeping it all from being swallowed up by the greenery.

  3. I'm putting this out for any Jews who feel like they don't want to criticize another denomination.

This is bullshit. There is no religious reason to bar suicides from our cemeteries. Not facilitating funerals is your choice, of course, but it's cruel to the living. What's next? Shrimp and tattoos? Meh.

"A landmark letter on #MAID, approved recently by #Toronto’s main #Orthodox #rabbinical council—also called the #VaadHaRabbanim—is sounding the alarm about what the group notes is the increasing prevalence of medically assisted death making “inroads” into the local #Jewish community. Citing the figure of 5,000 patients in #Ontario in 2023 who the council describes as being “#euthanized by medical practitioners”, the leading rabbis said they need to take steps to “curb this disturbing trend”: going forward, they will not officiate at the #funerals of MAID patients and will refuse to permit MAID patients to be buried in plots in their #synagogues#cemetery sections."

  8. Kerameikos Cemetery
    Al Purdy

So old that only traces of death remain
for death is broken with the broken stones
    as if convivial party-goers came
and talked so long to friends they stayed
to hear the night birds call their children home

All over Athens rooster voices wake
the past converses with itself and time
is like a plough that turns up yesterday
I move and all around —: the marketplace
where something tugs my sleeves as I go by

  11. Spotted this headstone at the old cemetery in Reykjavik last year. Love how the moss has become a decorative element on it.

There's an information board at the cemetery stating that they have some rare moss species growing there. I wish I could tell which ones.

  12. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Church Of Our Lady Of Health), Serpa, Portugal

Inside this Portuguese cemetery lies a Baroque gem. The old chapel had a gold-gilded altar and polychrome tiled walls. A small wooden door leads to a hidden ossuary, a place filled with ornate wooden caskets. The carved boxes containing bones are blanketed in dust. A hauntingly beautiful reflection on mortality.

  13. #WordyWednesday: Ossilegium ☠️

A noun meaning the act of collecting bones for placement in an ossuary after the rest of the body has decomposed. FYI, an ossuary is a building or structure to house bones or cremated remains. (I’ll do one of these on ossuaries later!)

The collected bones may be stored in individual boxes, small niches, or arranged into magnificent displays with many other skeletons.

Many cultures performed this as a means of conserving burial space. Ancient Greeks even collected bones from funeral pyres and washed them with wine and oil before placing them in urns.

    Pronounced oss-ih-LEE-gee-um.

Not to be confused with the metal band by the same name 🤘🏻

  14. #WordyWednesday: Catacombs

Another “cat” derived post? Don’t mind if I do!

Catacombs are underground galleries that house dead bodies in caskets, shrouds, urns, or fully exposed as bones.

They're excavated into areas with tombs, niches, chambers, and passageways. Spaces for bodies in the wall (loculi) may be sealed with tiles, plaster, brick and mortar, or marble slabs.

One of the most famous examples is the Paris Catacombs (although technically it's an ossuary since it's used for bones), which is home to over 6 million people's remains.

  15. #TombTuesday: An elegant carving on an above ground tomb in a New Orleans cemetery. This one has particular meaning for me (as both a Louise and a mother).

A lot of thought and meaning goes into the design of monuments like this. Urns symbolize death and serve as a vessel for the soul or earthly ashes. A draped urn signifies either the veil between heaven and earth/life and death, or the symbolic guarding of the urn’s contents. Carvings of ivy represent friendship, fidelity, and immortality, while willow branches show mourning. Flowers have different meanings based on their species. Roses are for love, beauty, and motherhood. Lilies, innocence and purity, marriage, and resurrection. Ferns stand for humility, solitude and sincerity.
