  1. I just wanted to say a big 'thank you' to those who have supported my present project, with a special big shout out to Stevie Gallacher for his feature on my work in The Sunday Post Newspaper, plus today's live interview on Talk Radio Europe with the very entertaining Giles Brown. Much appreciated chaps!

  11. Spent yesterday at Boroondara Cemetery in Kew, Victoria. One of the nicest garden cemeteries I've come across in Australia. The volunteers there do an enormous job keeping it all from being swallowed up by the greenery.

  15. I'm putting this out for any Jews who feel like they don't want to criticize another denomination.

This is bullshit. There is no religious reason to bar suicides from our cemeteries. Not facilitating funerals is your choice, of course, but it's cruel to the living. What's next? Shrimp and tattoos? Meh.

"A landmark letter on #MAID, approved recently by #Toronto’s main #Orthodox #rabbinical council—also called the #VaadHaRabbanim—is sounding the alarm about what the group notes is the increasing prevalence of medically assisted death making “inroads” into the local #Jewish community. Citing the figure of 5,000 patients in #Ontario in 2023 who the council describes as being “#euthanized by medical practitioners”, the leading rabbis said they need to take steps to “curb this disturbing trend”: going forward, they will not officiate at the #funerals of MAID patients and will refuse to permit MAID patients to be buried in plots in their #synagogues#cemetery sections."

  16. Our final destination

I took this picture in a cemetery near my hometown during COVID. It's a unique place because the cemetery sits close to the St-Lawrence River, along a small beach.

  17. Spotted this headstone at the old cemetery in Reykjavik last year. Love how the moss has become a decorative element on it.

There's an information board at the cemetery stating that they have some rare moss species growing there. I wish I could tell which ones.

  18. A quotation from Joseph Addison

Upon my going into the church, I entertained myself with the digging of a grave; and saw in every shovelful of it that was thrown up, the fragment of a bone or skull intermixt with a kind of fresh mouldering earth, that some time or other had a place in the composition of a human body. Upon this, I began to consider with myself what innumerable multitudes of people lay confused together under the pavement of that ancient cathedral; how men and women, friends and enemies, priests and soldiers, monks and prebendaries, were crumbled amongst one another, and blended together in the same common mass; how beauty, strength, and youth, with old age, weakness and deformity, lay undistinguished in the same promiscuous heap of matter.

Joseph Addison (1672-1719) English essayist, poet, statesman
Essay (1711-03-30), “Thoughts in Westminster Abbey,” The Spectator, No. 26

  19. A quotation from Joseph Addison

I yesterday passed a whole afternoon in the churchyard, the cloisters, and the church, amusing myself with the tombstones and inscriptions that I met with in those several regions of the dead. Most of them recorded nothing else of the buried person, but that he was born upon one day, and died upon another: the whole history of his life being comprehended in those two circumstances, that are common to all mankind. I could not but look upon these registers of existence, whether of brass or marble, as a kind of satire upon the departed persons; who had left no other memorial of them, but that they were born and that they died. They put me in mind of several persons mentioned in the battles of heroic poems, who have sounding names given them, for no other reason but that they may be killed, and are celebrated for nothing but being knocked on the head.
