The #entertainment industry in North America is facing a reckoning. Three years on from the pandemic that shut most of our workplaces down (in some cases for years, and many individual companies didn't ever come back), facing a loss of traditional revenue streams and an audience that doesn't look or act the same as it used to, we're reaching the expiry date on the rushed (and often exploitative) contracts that got us back to work. After years of being told that we should be grateful to have any #work at all, wildly #understaffed productions, a massive loss of #skilled #labour across all facets of the industry (so, so many either left for other jobs or didn't survive the pandemic years), and #inflation shrinking our already-too-small paycheques, we're seeing #union after union vote to #strike in 2023-24. It's a scary and unstable time, with many of us having already exhausted our savings just to make it through 2020-21 ... but it's so heartening to see my #siblings in unions across the continent being willing to stand up and say "we are worth a living wage and a secure, safe work environment". To see us vote for our long-term benefit, knowing that it will bring short-term hardships. If you know anyone who works in #Film #Television or #LiveEntertainment please show them your support now. #TeachForCanada –#Gakinaamaage is a #nonprofit #organization that works with #northern #FirstNations to #recruit , #prepare & #support #teachers . Even with the organization’s support, of the 23 First Nations that #Teach For #Canada–Gakinaamaage serves, 43% have reported #classrooms of #students that don’t have a teacher. According to a #report by the #AssemblyOfFirstNations , approximately 1/3 of First Nations schools in Canada are #understaffed .

The Railroad Workers United pinned the threat on rail industry cuts to inspection staff and the elimination of safety protocol. The East Palestine train was hurried, the non-profit said in a statement, and though a cause hasn’t been fully determined, it appears the train was not properly inspected.
Rail companies laid off more than 20,000 rail workers during a year period in 2018-2019, representing the biggest layoffs in rail since the Great Recession, and the nation’s rail force has dipped below 200,000 – the lowest level ever, and down from 1 million at its peak.
“They have cut the hell out of the workforce, and there are big plans to cut it further,” Kaminkow said. “Just because the rail companies are profitable doesn’t mean they’re healthy.”
