That Night by Gillian McAllister
While on vacation in Europe with her siblings, Frannie calls her sister and her brother asking them to come immediately. When they show up, they find that she has killed a pedestrian.
They both agree to help her bury the body in the woods behind their summer home.
That is the first of many stupid decisions.
As the local police investigate the disappearance, the sibling’s lies bring them closer to an arrest. We watch as the police investigate and the siblings guilt can’t be ignored.
Instead of confessing, they slowly share the incident with others. Instead of making it better, they become so tied up in the lies that eventually they are led to the only resolution possible.
The book asks the question – are you willing to do anything for your sibling?
The story is told from multiple points of view. The siblings not only vacation together, but they also work together in a veterinary practice that their mother is attempting to retire from. Frannie’s brother and sister are both vets and she is their receptionist. On top of that, they all live in cottages next to each other. This family obviously spends too much time together.
I have read other books by this author that I enjoyed more than this one. There is so much introspection, and it seemed predictable as the story unfolded.
I didn’t like the characters, so I didn’t care what happened to them. They didn’t have enough redeeming qualities to make me care.
I finished it because of my commitment to read and review.
My first book by this author, Wrong Place, Wrong Time was a book club choice and was more recent than this one.
I do think that if you are a Gillian McAllister fan, you may want to read it just to say that you did. I have sometimes finished books by authors I loved because I had hopes that the book would get better and because I like to say I read everything they wrote. Some people will love this book. It just wasn’t for me. That doesn’t mean I have given up on McAllister. I will probably read more in the future. Since this book came out in 2021, you’ve probably already read it.
