  1. I got an email from Ana Gonzalez, of #Texas #aflcio about the ongoing #strike of 70 #skilled #workers represented by the Texas City Metal Trades Council at Ashland Specialty Chemicals in Texas City, #TX.

Workers are asking for our help to send messages to Ashland Plant Manager Darren Becker, urging him to come back to the table in good faith.

In negotiations, Ashland management sought to:

    - Force employees to perform work outside their craft, creating serious #safety risks for members and the surrounding #community,

    - Slash the paid sick time members earned over decades of bargaining, and

    - #Outsource the storeroom to eliminate #union #jobs.

These workers only want to keep Ashland safe and are fighting to keep the #benefits they’ve earned.

She included this link, with q preformatted #email that you can customize and send.

My ex's father worked for Ashland, and it killed him (he died of #leukemia less than a year after the wedding). Worker safety is important.

Smart people working together to solve problems? I bet a collection of Mefites could assemble to hammer out a proper list for TimHare's Ask Metafilter question about recommendations for more movies featuring collective "competency porn."

  10. Interesting article by GitHub on #AI generated code.
    github.blog/2024-02-22-how-ai-

Plenty of things to complain about #generativeai and #programming, but I don't want to go back to a time before these tools were available. I've become addicted in no time. I delete and rewrite a lot of the generated code. But the utility and #productivity gains are undeniable.

But, no matter how great the tool, #humans still need to be #qualified, knowledgeable, & #skilled.

  13. The #entertainment industry in North America is facing a reckoning. Three years on from the pandemic that shut most of our workplaces down (in some cases for years, and many individual companies didn't ever come back), facing a loss of traditional revenue streams and an audience that doesn't look or act the same as it used to, we're reaching the expiry date on the rushed (and often exploitative) contracts that got us back to work. After years of being told that we should be grateful to have any #work at all, wildly #understaffed productions, a massive loss of #skilled #labour across all facets of the industry (so, so many either left for other jobs or didn't survive the pandemic years), and #inflation shrinking our already-too-small paycheques, we're seeing #union after union vote to #strike in 2023-24. It's a scary and unstable time, with many of us having already exhausted our savings just to make it through 2020-21 ... but it's so heartening to see my #siblings in unions across the continent being willing to stand up and say "we are worth a living wage and a secure, safe work environment". To see us vote for our long-term benefit, knowing that it will bring short-term hardships. If you know anyone who works in #Film #Television or #LiveEntertainment please show them your support now. The people who make the art you love are in crisis and fighting back.

  17. Some of the people immigrating to NZ as 'skilled workers" have no skills at all. It seems that their "qualifications" are a bodge-job which their employers self-certify.

The Alliance Group's plant near Invercargill is called out in this story.

#EPBD must be ambitious & transformative to duly contribute to our #climate & #energy objectives but needs requirements for the availability of sufficient #skilled professionals!
