Also the Malay subtitles were INCREDIBLE. it just sucks that we still don't really preserve them in any home releases (I believe Netflix/otherwise Malay translations are handled by their own contracts. I'd check with this one down the line if not for the fact I'd have to pay for d+). The 80s/90s era of horrible subs because the contracts used to come out of Hong Kong is definitively over.

I've looked into alternative ways to sub youtube videos, and NekoCap seems to be the best one so far.
It's open source, no AI stuff or paywalls, supports a bunch of other video sites, and it supports complex subs so you can use different fonts, do text placement, all that cool stuff. They have their own subs editor, but I have never used it, just make my subs on AegisSub and upload them there.
You do need to have a google account to upload subs there, which is eh, but you get your own little page with all the videos you subbed and you can put a donation link there which is nice.
It links to the original youtube videos, so you can share them from the NekoCap website or just use their web extension to watch straight from YouTube, no account needed.
Anyway, I think it's neat, been using it a decent amount, I like it.

(*The manga/anime is set in ~Ming China, which from my perspective is like if I'd put a story in the exotic 17thC Oslo, Norway. Still enjoyable enough for me to revive my Crunchyroll subscription.)

The thing is, the literal translation of "pence", the plural of "penny", is "penises".
So don't do it! 😅 Just keep it as is.

Oh, Dexter subtitler, you disappoint me so. If it had been a pop song, you would have noted the name of the song and the artist, But Miles Davis’s “So What”— one of the most important songs in all of jazz? One of the great opening tunes on any record, period? It is reduced to “Light jazz music playing.” *sigh*
I get that not everyone's musical backgrounds are as wide my own, but jeez, have a little curiosity... It is your job, after all.

As the app that is the star of today's window has updated on my phone today, let me introduce you to Greta, the German app for audiodescription, closed captions and other forms of accessibility in movies.
It works by first downloading an encrypted, I believe, copy of the movie's audio and then when we want to watch it described or subtitled, we just start the app, let it listen to the sound around us and it will tune in at the right spot in time with the accessibility accommodations we need. Should you forget your headphones to hear the audiodescription in, you can still listen to it over the earpiece. The system is not context-aware so it can tune into the movie at a cinema or at home when watching on the Internet or on TV which gives universal access to all the accommodations. The only wish I would have is more independent cinema productions and the ability to combine multiple adjustments so that I could watch that movie with a lot of Austrian dialect in it with both audiodescription and subtitles.
Today's update brings sound amplification. If I understand correctly, you can also have the actual audio track of the movie played through your phone in sync with the original.
I believe the concept was replicated in other countries already so you might know it under another name.

There are #subtitlers who tweet about their latest #subtitling work, recommending the show and expressing their passion, excitement and gratitude that they landed such a fantastic gig.
Which makes me wonder if this "inspires" new-entrants who may see
"passion" as being ready to work more for less. Which may cause collective damage.
Not sure how this can be addressed. By openly talking about rates, possibly?

I work primarily with #audiovisual translation, #subtitling and #technologies, and everything in between. I'm currently working on #eyetracking, #machinetranslation implementation by experts and non-experts, #GlobalSouth and #GlobalNorth cooperation, and #translator training.

Captioning is a tedious process... as it goes, it should be done in about 35 days, at which point I'll be able to recite all of it by heart (with timestamps).
