Hace unos días le escribí a un amigo.
O a alguien que todavía considero amigo, aunque la vida moderna parezca empeñada en convertir a todo el mundo en adversario.
No le escribí para hablar de política.
Ya hay suficiente gente haciendo eso gratis.
Le escribí porque me di cuenta de algo incómodo.
Extrañaba más los rodajes que las discusiones.
Extrañaba más los proyectos que los discursos.
Extrañaba más las risas que tener la razón.
Porque al final de los años no recordé quién defendía a quién.
Recordé los trasteos imposibles bajo la lluvia.
Los cafés.
Los cigarrillos.
Las jornadas eternas.
Las cámaras.
Los favores.
Los momentos en que alguien apareció cuando hacía falta.
Y eso vale más que cualquier campaña.
La política cambia cada cuatro años.
Los algoritmos cada seis meses.
Las indignaciones cada semana.
Pero las personas que estuvieron cuando había que cargar cajas, empujar proyectos o resolver problemas reales son más difíciles de reemplazar.
Por eso le escribí.
No para convencerlo.
No para cambiarlo.
No para pedirle nada.
Solo para recordarle que antes de ser consumidores de opiniones fuimos amigos.
Y porque a mis cuarenta y dos años ya estoy demasiado viejo para seguir cambiando personas por discusiones.
Obsoleto. Observador. Operario de cámara.

This time I used Simulation Nodes, and it looks a lot better. For each frequency band, I'm generating an icosphere 60 times per second and shooting them up the Y axis. This one was actually far easier than the way I was doing it before. Simulation nodes are very powerful.
I wish I could render this thing up with cycles. Even with my GPU, a single frame takes 42 seconds, so this whole 5237-frame video would take two and a half days to render. It would be less if I dropped the framerate, but this does not look nearly as good at a lower framerate.

Spent a while working on this one. It's a music visualizer using a 10x10 grid of cubes. I tried a lot of different approaches to get this working. It uses Python with librosa to do the audio analysis, using STFT to pull per-frequency amplitudes.
My first approach was to use a driver-driven value in geometry nodes, which would have worked for a sigle value, but I couldn't figure out a way to pass instance data into it. That would have been perfect if the driver node had an input socket that it could work with, but it doesn't.
Second approach was to bake the data to F-Curves, thinking I could use arbitrary tracks for the different frequency bands, but I couldn't figure out how to sample at an offset of the current time to get the wave effect working right.
Third approach, which is this final result, was to bake the STFT to a grayscale image, with each column representing a frequency and each row being a volume of that frequency at each centisecond slice. Then I loaded that in as a texture and scaled instances by sampling into that texture based on the current frame. That worked much better.
Rendered in Eevee, because Cycles was going to take at least a dozen hours. This instead took just under an hour.
I might come back to it and see if I can add some motion to make it resemble a particle system, with each cube a constant size, moving up from the bottom and disappearing.

Revisiting bsdiff as a tool for digital preservation
by @beet_keeperI introduced bsdiff in a blog in 2014. bsdiff compares the differences between two files, e.g. broken_file_a and corrected_file_b and creates a patch that can be applied to broken_file_a to generate a byte-for-byte match for corrected_file_b.
On the face of it, in an archive, we probably only care about corrected_file_2 and so why would we care about a technology that patches a broken file?
In all of the use-cases we can imagine the primary reasons are cost savings and removing redundancy in file storage or transmission of digital information. In one very special case we can record the difference between broken_file_a and corrected_file_b and give users a totally objective method of recreating corrected_file_b from broken_file_a providing 100% verifiable proof of the migration pathway taken between the two files.

‘Mi Barrio: Vallecas’ 📹🎞️ un documental creado por jóvenes de nuestro barrio
En el 2023, un amplio número de personas (más de 150 personas de diferentes generaciones) colaboraron en la grabación del documental 'Mi Barrio: Vallecas', un proyecto realizado por la Coordinadora Infantil y Juvenil de Tiempo Libre de Vallecas, y codirigido por Jorge Martínez Vera e Isabel Iniesta.
A través de herramientas audiovisuales, se pretendía desestigmatizar a la juventud y en concreto, a la juventud vallecana, fomentando un aumento de la conciencia social, por medio de disminuir y desmitificar prejuicios y falsas creencias sobre el barrio de Vallecas y su población y visibilizar el trabajo que se realiza desde las asociaciones del barrio, la labor de vecinas y vecinos del barrio, personas voluntarias, profesionales de la educación y del mundo audiovisual.
El documental ha sido seleccionado para optar a 4 nominaciones, ha sido visualizado en 22 paises y más de 1200 espectadores acudieron a su estreno en cines.

The sensitivity index: Corrupting Y2K

Fixity is an interesting property enabled by digital technologies. Checksums allow us to demonstrate mathematically that a file has not been changed. An often cited definition of fixity is:
Fixity, in the preservation sense, means the assurance that a digital file has remained unchanged, i.e. fixed — Bailey (2014)
It’s very much linked to the concept of integrity. A UNESCO definition of which:
The state of being whole, uncorrupted and free of unauthorized and undocumented changes.
Integrity is massively important these days. It gives us the guarantees we need that digital objects we work with aren’t harboring their own sinister secrets in the form of malware and other potentially damaging payloads.
These values are contingent on bit-level preservation, the field of digital preservation largely assumes this; that we will be able to look after our content without losing information. As feasible as this may be these days, what happens if we lose some information? Where does authenticity come into play?
Through corrupting Y2K, I took time to reflect on integrity versus authenticity, as well as create some interesting glitched outputs. I also uncovered what may be the first audio that reveals what the Millennium Bug itself may have sounded like! Keen to hear it? Read on to find out more.
