'The Austrian School of economics maintains that money originated as a high-saleability commodity selected by market forces to reduce barter friction, treating credit as a secondary mechanism backed by pre-existing physical savings. This paper demonstrates that the Austrian foundational model rests on dual empirical and operational fallacies: the myth of commodity money and the myth of absolute physical scarcity. Drawing on A. Mitchell Innes’s credit theory of money, modern balance-sheet mechanics, C.H. Douglas’s Social Credit analysis, and the realities of modern industrial capacity, we show that money has always been credit—a system of clearing debt—and that credit creation precedes both savings and physical production. In a technological era characterized by systemic capacity abundance, holding to gold-standard or loanable-funds assumptions misdiagnoses the nature of financial capital, misunderstands the true drivers of inflation, and severely distorts macroeconomic analysis.'

This article traces the separatist movement back to 1980 and the response to the National Energy Program.

I'm not an expert on the history of Canada, still less that of Alberta, so I have no grounds for for contesting the article's claim about the beginnings of calls for separation.

I wonder, though, if the groundwork for the rise of separatism was laid by Alberta's distinctive political history from 1935 onwards. That year saw the election of a Social Credit government in the province; the right populist party would dominate the political landscape there for another 35 years.

The heritage of the Social Credit movement in Alberta, with its roots in evangelicalism and populist resentment of banks and distant metropolitan elites, might explain some (not all) of the current separatist movement's sympathies with Trumpish Americanism.

Understanding the rise of the Social Credit movement in Alberta matters not only for the history of Canada and of the Grest Depression in general, but also for our understanding of right wing populist movements.

Сам #SamAltman публично призвал #Pentagon предложить аналогичные условия всем разработчикам #ArtificialIntelligence и снизить напряжение вокруг конфликта с #Anthropic. По его словам, для защиты демократии военным действительно нужны передовые технологии, но с чёткими ограничителями и механизмами безопасности.

Ситуация вызывает дополнительный интерес ещё и потому, что выбор #OpenAI может объясняться не только технологическими возможностями, но и большей гибкостью в вопросах регулирования #AI. В отличие от жёсткой позиции #Anthropic, компания Альтмана показала готовность к компромиссам, позволяющим #USGov формально соблюдать ограничения и одновременно сохранять доступ к передовым разработкам.

Немаловажную роль играет и фактор #SiliconValley. Ранее Альтман возглавлял #YCombinator, который традиционно связан с кругом предпринимателей, известным как #PayPalMafia.

There is, in fact, a government run social credit score, but it's very specific. It's to punish greedy capitalists who live in luxury while underpaying their workers, not paying taxes, etc.

The fact of the matter is that the application of algorithms in manners that directly affect individuals used to be an isolated, sandboxed (and typically regulated) practice (like credit scores in banking, actuarial tables in insurance etc).

Once in Canada, in the 1970s, we lived through a federal Conservative government that relied on the Social Credit as kingmakers in Joe Clark's minority government. If you're too young to remember the Social Credit party, replace "Social" with "bat shit crazy" and replace "Credit" with "vocal anti-Semitic Catholic extremists". That will give you an idea. BTW, Musk's grandfather ran for many years as a Social Credit candidate during the height of their anti-Semitic era. Go figure.

It starts here for places not under authoritarian rule. Once everyone is accustomed to it, the next phase is to introduce the #SocialCreditSystem.

Remember how public #CCTV started? Only politicians were in favour of it at first. Years later, no one cared anymore.

Same strategy.

They are already expecting people will complain about this. But it is here to stay. And people will once again eventually just accept it and ignore it.
