This article traces the separatist movement back to 1980 and the response to the National Energy Program.
I'm not an expert on the history of Canada, still less that of Alberta, so I have no grounds for for contesting the article's claim about the beginnings of calls for separation.
I wonder, though, if the groundwork for the rise of separatism was laid by Alberta's distinctive political history from 1935 onwards. That year saw the election of a Social Credit government in the province; the right populist party would dominate the political landscape there for another 35 years.
The heritage of the Social Credit movement in Alberta, with its roots in evangelicalism and populist resentment of banks and distant metropolitan elites, might explain some (not all) of the current separatist movement's sympathies with Trumpish Americanism.
Understanding the rise of the Social Credit movement in Alberta matters not only for the history of Canada and of the Grest Depression in general, but also for our understanding of right wing populist movements.

Такой подход, по словам компании, физически исключает установку моделей на боевые #Drones или автономные роботизированные платформы.
Глава Пентагона #PeteHegseth уже приветствовал соглашение, назвав #OpenAI «надёжным партнёром». В то же время #Anthropic готовится оспаривать в суде статус угрозы для цепочек поставок и возможный запрет на участие в государственных контрактах США.
Сам #SamAltman публично призвал #Pentagon предложить аналогичные условия всем разработчикам #ArtificialIntelligence и снизить напряжение вокруг конфликта с #Anthropic. По его словам, для защиты демократии военным действительно нужны передовые технологии, но с чёткими ограничителями и механизмами безопасности.
Ситуация вызывает дополнительный интерес ещё и потому, что выбор #OpenAI может объясняться не только технологическими возможностями, но и большей гибкостью в вопросах регулирования #AI. В отличие от жёсткой позиции #Anthropic, компания Альтмана показала готовность к компромиссам, позволяющим #USGov формально соблюдать ограничения и одновременно сохранять доступ к передовым разработкам.
Немаловажную роль играет и фактор #SiliconValley. Ранее Альтман возглавлял #YCombinator, который традиционно связан с кругом предпринимателей, известным как #PayPalMafia.
Одной из ключевых фигур там остаётся #PeterThiel — сооснователь #PayPal и #Palantir, компании, которая уже давно считается одним из ключевых технологических подрядчиков американской разведки и оборонного сектора.

The fact of the matter is that the application of algorithms in manners that directly affect individuals used to be an isolated, sandboxed (and typically regulated) practice (like credit scores in banking, actuarial tables in insurance etc).
But the carte-blanche granted to #adtech (and #bigtech more broadly) has opened Pandora's box of opaque, unregulated, abusive monitoring and influencing of user behaviors.

Once in Canada, in the 1970s, we lived through a federal Conservative government that relied on the Social Credit as kingmakers in Joe Clark's minority government. If you're too young to remember the Social Credit party, replace "Social" with "bat shit crazy" and replace "Credit" with "vocal anti-Semitic Catholic extremists". That will give you an idea. BTW, Musk's grandfather ran for many years as a Social Credit candidate during the height of their anti-Semitic era. Go figure.

It starts here for places not under authoritarian rule. Once everyone is accustomed to it, the next phase is to introduce the #SocialCreditSystem.
Remember how public #CCTV started? Only politicians were in favour of it at first. Years later, no one cared anymore.
Same strategy.
They are already expecting people will complain about this. But it is here to stay. And people will once again eventually just accept it and ignore it.
Then boom: #SocialCredit is here.
