  1. Something I learnt for the day

Sorry to say I think I missed this bit of insightful legislation, my excuse is that we were out of the UK for a lot of that decade.

“May I remind you, the man was elected on a platform of change — bold, principled, transformative change. Instead, we’ve got the same old rotten stench wafting from Downing Street: broken pledges on nationalising energy, U-turns on workers’ rights, grovelling to billionaires while the poor queue at food banks, and a foreign policy that makes Tony #Blair look like a fucking pacifist”

  4. Yet even that is not enough. Successive Labour leaders enabled and indulged #Mandelson, despite clear evidence of trouble. #Kinnock first promoted Mandelson. #JohnSmith wisely shunned Mandelson, but #Blair & #GordonBrown both brought #Mandelson into senior government posts, and even made him an #EUcommissioner.

This isn't about #OllyRobɓins, or Mandelson, or even Starmer & McSweeney. It's about 2 generations of thoroughly rotten politics in a major political party.

And what #Blair will not confront is that this position reflects mainstream #public #opinion. A recent #poll found as low as 12% of #Britons support Israel’s actions in #Gaza, while an overwhelming #majority supports an #arms #embargo on #Israel, #sanctions & the #arrest of its #leader, Benjamin #Netanyahu, for #warcrimes."

  7. @randahl

It is sad, but you are totally right 😥

You cannot imagine the reactions and the words (here in #Spain) of the speakers and leaders of the right-wing parties and mass media.

It is disgusting 🤮 to listen to their rants to defend the criminal bombing of #Iran. Some of them are even asking for the #US dictator to retaliate and pressure more the country.

Our right-wing politicians really miss their 2003 implication (#Bush, #Blair and #Aznar) in the invasion of #Irak.

    My bridges are smouldering ruins.

#blair lit the fires some years ago when he went all right wing pseudo-tory. There were some remaining bridges, awaiting the general election.

Since then the wind of truth blew strong
    #starmer happened.

The flames grew stronger, bridges started burning:-

    #genocide in #gaza
    #lobbying bribes
NHS #Sellout to hostile foreign agents
    Wrongful imprisonment of #protesters
    #authoritarianism
    Etc

My bridges are all burnt out now.
    No return.

  13. "It’s easy to forget now, but the highest law during the New Labour years, particularly for its staunchest advocates, generally revolved around status and personal advantage. This was politics, at its worst, at the end of history.

Philip Gould, New Labour’s polling supremo, wrote that the aspirations of the post-industrial working class had significantly shifted, now revolving around things like buying a new washing machine. Ideals and utopias were a thing of the past, he contended, replaced by consumerism, Pareto optimality and public management speak. But discarded alongside the ideological refuse of the Twentieth Century — by many of Gould’s fellow travellers at least — was any belief in an ethical life. For the faction’s most senior figures that intensified into a veneration of power for its own sake. It’s no accident that Jonathan Powell, formerly Blair’s chief of staff, and now Starmer’s national security adviser, wrote a book titled The New Machiavelli.

Rather than politics being an instrument to achieve a particular good, such as social democracy, national renewal or a flourishing free market, it became an end in itself. That would, in time, give rise to some of the ugliest pathologies in public life: if politics was about technique, and not morality, then how one behaved didn’t matter — and one certainly shouldn’t be concerned about the consequences. Understand this and suddenly the actions of not only Mandelson, but Blair and Alastair Campbell, become easier to comprehend. An obsession with making money, a vice typically ascribed to the Conservatives, is far more intuitive to the common man."

  24. Blairism appeared as a "Third Way". Despite some advances on things like early years provision & child poverty, was soon revealed as militaristic Thatcherism lite.

Starmerism appeared as a pragmatic Corbynism, but soon, with hardly any redeeming factors, revealed itself as little better than social fascism 'lite', hand in glove with corporate, planet-wrecking, exploiting and extracting class interests.

History repeated itself, first as farce, then as tragedy.

  30. “This new report [from Tony #Blair Institute] is muddled and misleading.

There is far more progress being made around the world to #decarbonise the global economy than it suggests.

For instance, China is the world’s leading producer and domestic deployer of #renewables and #EVs. Its power generating capacity from renewables has now exceeded that of fossil fuels and its emissions are likely to peak in the next two years.”

You should always start with #commonsense, as that was is being taken for granted, as a popular understandings of what is going on. Common sense always already contains critical elements and are always contradictory. What are the organisational forms and processes through which common sese can become more collective, more coherent and more critical, in a way that enables collective critical actions and practices.
That is far more complex and challenging than left #populism. We have seen the limits of those in spain and greece.
    (...)
What we can see, are two different forms of #neoliberal hegemony: On the one hand, what #Mbeki, #Clinton, #Blair, #Obama, represent is a liberal form of neoliberal hegemony, that seeks to neutralize the popular antagonisms that are the workings of neoliberal #capitalism. On the other hand, what #zuma #modi #trump represent, is a #populist form of this #hegemony, that tries to mobilize these social antagonisms, more often than not in terms of #race, #religion, #xenophobia, but then tries to keep control over that, which is where the #authoritarian character of that [shows].
