  1. Why is #autism increasing? Not because more people are born with it, it’s because we have better #diagnostic tools now. Why else are more #latediagnoses happening and more girl s are finally being #diagnosed? #Autistic #neurodivergent

  6. "#Anorexia" being a diagnosis only given to ppl of a certain #weight and then anyone Over being #diagnosed with "#atypical anorexia" should be a sign that the #dsm is bullshit and #psychiatry fundamentally perpetuates LETHAL #hierarchies

  7. I decided to read the full #symptom list for #adhd. I have been #diagnosed since childhood, and tried some treatments, but the side effects were always too severe as I am allergic or sensitive to EVERYTHING. #Therapy and behavioral help is what helped me most in that way.

I realized I'd never actually read all the symptoms.

Then laughed when I thought "I feel personally attacked. I'm the guy they point to when they need an obvious example,".

  8. You’re an #adult and you think you are #autistic, what do you do? #Autism, #psychologically diagnosed as Autism #Spectrum Disorder (#ASD), is most commonly thought of as a #developmental disorder #diagnosed during childhood. In 2018, the #CDC reported that 1 in 44 US children were diagnosed as autistic, but what happens when these kids grow up? And what about those that fell through a gap in the system and were under-reported.

  9. #introduction I'm an #autistic man that has never been formally #diagnosed as autistic. I discovered that I was probably on the spectrum a few months ago. I believe that it is my #cancer that altered my #brain in such a way that I am less able to #mask now. I am now reflecting upon my life and reevaluating everything. The signs were there but I was just very good at masking, and I think even without the masking I'm the type of autistic person who does not need a lot of mental health support to have a decent life.

I've created a #substack to publish my #ruminations about my life, what it means to self-diagnose late in life, and other topics related to autism. (See my profile.) My cancer left me #disabled. My articles are free for now, but some of them will eventually be behind a #paywall.

I've written on #Mastodon under a different account, but I want to segregate my ruminations about autism from the rest.

  11. #Queer #mum was #diagnosed with #cancer after being ignored by #doctors

Getting a diagnosis wasn’t easy – because of her #age, she was repeatedly fobbed off by doctors who told her she wasn’t old enough to have #breastcancer. To add insult to injury, when she finally diagnosed she asked for a double mastectomy and was forced to see a psychologist.

  12. I’m in the recently #diagnosed stage of having SO many random flashbacks to when I was a child and where I had an #autistic experience but didn’t know I was autistic. It’s like one by one…memories are changing. My whole life story is changing. There is a new #narrative My memories are now becoming something else..explained…where before it was just one weird moment after another. You would think this is a good thing and it is…but it’s also unsettling. It feels #surreal and #overwhelming

  13. The hardest thing for me after I was formally #diagnosed as autistic was figuring out what kind of supports I could access and what a "reasonable" accommodation looked like. I remember wishing, as many #autistic people do, that I could simply see a few examples!

So today I want to share my student support document with you all! For context, I am a PhD student and so my accommodations are mostly written with that in mind, hence nothing about lectures or homework. I hope others can also chime in with any additional accommodations they receive!

  14. I hear a lot of people saying after being #diagnosed or self diagnosed..and telling #friends or #family..people say to them “but you don’t look autistic?” Or “you don’t act #autistic ?”I have yet to have ANYONE say this to me. 🧐 And that made me laugh last night because maybe everyone was all “there’s something different about Anne Marie..hmm..what is it..” this whole time and I’m over here thinking my #masking to make myself “fit in” or “blend in” was working..when it wasn’t. 🤣
