  1. @sabrinkmann
    if it were one ('a' way), it weren't #federated. That's the dilemma. #multilateral can hardly compete with a billionaire monopoly in terms of ease. Your choice.

    Still there's a lot of room for good design and one can always have wishes. However, there's no shortage of 1:1 communication channels. Integrate some. Get creative.

    P.S: your initial post has no mention e.g. about a priority of choice. Name-drops $billionaireplatform and not much else. Smells like a demanding consumer attitude. Not constructive. Trolly. Sad.

  2. Guess who spent a good amount of the afternoon upgrading this very Mastodon instance to 4.6.6, while completely missing the 4.7.0 update ?

    Ya, bingo, that’me

  3. @chadmccullough bad for the ipo of both companies - they are overvalued but china is helping a bit, i bet on china more in the next 6 mos? v possibly, it is a real horse race and it feels like china cares more about users with open weights or hybrid, the nation should look at it as a security imperative but not to the existential extent, things take a long time sometimes. the next 6 mos is sort of a litmus test, who has it and who don't; the next 6 mos will be exciting, lots will happen #policy #local ai #federated enclave #short big tech ai positions #p/e ratios #tryritos #doritos #don'tritos

  4. Of course, just because a service or app is #FOSS or #federated doesn't guarantee one's privacy, although the chances are better. Plus, a federated service or #FLOSS app will likely have alternatives available should there be privacy concerns.

    The communities surrounding a federated service or FOSS app are more likely to make fellow users aware of any privacy concerns.

    I do my best to make friends and acquaintances aware of the dangers, but, it is an uphill struggle.

  5. I'm trying out "vibe-coding" social media that allows us to "comment" on what we follow via "feed syndication" and publish those "comments" to other users. Codename: "Conflux".

    Example: feed-share.obulou.org/#/p/post

    #Conflux #socialmedia #vibe #coding #federated #syndication #experimental #technology #social #infrastructure #decentralized #community #blogging #sharing #opensource

  6. Simple hashtag proposal for dates: datetags for the #indieweb

    In summary by example:
    * #2026_08_04 ISO8601 YYYY_MM_DD date of this post
    * #2026_216 ISO8601 YYYY_DDD ordinal date of this post
    * #2026_08 ISO8601 YYYY_MM month of this post

    Many of us posting on the indieweb often post about things in the past. Photos, events, or sometimes throwback posts. Hashtags communicate and aggregate what posts are about. Posts about the past are usually about a specific date in the past, or sometimes an entire month. Thus it makes sense to use hashtags for those dates and months.

    I have been hashtagging such posts about the past for several years, and with some iteration have developed a convention that works for international readability, and is linked and indexed in #federated #hashtag systems like #ActivityPub (e.g. #Mastodon etc.) and #ATProto (e.g. #Bluesky etc.).

    Examples of posts 10 years ago and this past week that use datetags:
    * https://tantek.com/2016/153/t4/june — monthtag and datetag
    * https://tantek.com/2026/215/t1/watched-odyssey-metreon-70mm-imax — normal and ordinal ISO8601 dates.

    Additional possibilities to explore:
    * yeartags — hashtags for entire years
    * timetags — hashtags for specific times, undated/floating times

    After several web searches I didn’t find any prior proposals for hashtags for dates or times. Hopefully by hashtagging this post, future web searches will find this proposal.

    Have you hashtagged your posts with dates or times? Share your examples!

  7. the guardian: The most immediate threat to Silicon Valley’s status quo has come from a series of Chinese-made open-source, open-weight AI models that are free to download and use.

    I tend to see ai as more of a dynamic thing, the ideal ai will keep learning more every day and be busy with agentic tasks and inference but also training, especially on the data corpus of the business, it will also be proactive and reach out and network and contribute compute time to industry/sector goals #p2p inference #federated enclaves #shell answer man #polymorphic codebase

  8. RE: mastodon.social/@anewsocial/11

    This is pretty impressive (and cool, for certain nerd values of cool). A reminder that, as some of my friends in namespaces and identity remind me regularly -- particularly #opensource #IdM #socialmedia, #IoT or streaming system creators (Drummond, Evan, Phil, others, IYKYK): seemingly-mundane functions like unique assignment of distributed names or tokens can be craycray complex when they are #federated and must securely hyperscale. Cheers to infosec.exchange/@snarfed.org and this this whole team.

  9. Ran into some issues tonight working on bringing up a new #mastodon -ish service on the new domain

    Neither #ActivityPub or #federated protocols were designed with data migration support - bit of a gaping hole there

    Tomorrow is going to be kludge central 🤬

  11. Federated protocols of the future should consider designing themselves so that even if they use DNS, it is not the foundation of their own identity system so they are not hopelessly bound to it. Federated networks which have message relaying capability such as Bitcoin or BGP can also span across different networks such as cjdns, Yggdrasil, I2P and of course the outside internet.

  14. @dansup has counted the landlords. That’s how it stands.

    13 million profiles – who would have thought it? We can certainly be a little proud. Everyone has done their bit – some more, some less, each according to their ability.
    So now we have a huge, global, independent, federated network.
    It’s by no means the solution; the work is only just beginning. I’ve been involved right from the start. As I’m not a dev, I’m just a loudmouth. Someone’s got to do it, after all :)) #fedi #fediverse #federation #federated #freedom

  15. Continuwuity 26.6.0, the lightweight Matrix chat server, is finally out! This is by far our largest release ever yet! There are so many incredible improvements in this release, and there's never been a better time to get started!

  16. Observations from #developing a new #federated #ActivityPub service.

    OBS-1 - it's fun when your service posts something (or something tags your service) and then you get an insta-flood of webfinger/actor/discovery and actor requests from _five hundred_ instances.

    OBS-2 - am currently logging the shutdown of vmst.io instance and its a little sad:

    <log snipped for privacy>
    Its sending an actor/object delete action for _every_ user, about one eveyr 3 seconds.

    OBS-3 - WOW there's a lot of noise traffic that my inbox handler is like `wtf did I get sent _this!?`.
