  9. CW: Acacia gum fiber review

Acacia gum (aka gum arabic) is inexpensive, has a mild taste, & it made my tea a bit thicker, which I like. It gave me a sense of well-being that I get when a prebiotic is doing its job. Unfortunately, acacia is a legume and I react to legumes, so after the second day of taking 6 g* I had increasing dysphagia, so I discontinued.

I should have expected as much, but - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It was also difficult to dissolve. I had best success in that regard by whisking it slowly into a bit of oatmilk (cold, of course), which I then added to my tea.

    * this study ⬇️ found benefit at a dose of 10 g / day. If I had not had a reaction to it I would have worked my way up to that dose.

  10. Effects of Undaria pinnatifida (wakame) on the human intestinal environment
    doi.org/10.31989/ffhd.v8i10.54

"... the fraction of bifidobacteria as a percentage of all fecal bacteria increased significantly during the wakame intake period. "

    ~

I should go back to eating wakame. Not really my favorite, but probably takes about the same amount of time to prepare as the slippery elm tea.

  11. Frustrating day looking for a xylooligosaccharide supplement that is not derived from corn. XOS support the growth of Bifidobacteria.

There don't seem to by any made from other sources, even though it would seem wood could be a potentially cheap source.

I'm drinking slippery elm tea (Ulmus rubra), which has a long history of use in traditional medicine. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much research on it (which is weird & also frustrating). Herbals say it's active constituent is 'mucilage'. Would it act as a prebiotic for Bifidobacteria?

  13. 1/2 - So, I've been treating my own #LongCovid with #TurmericMilk, #VitaminD3, and #probiotics from various food sources (some with #VitaminK2), and consumed with #fiber-rich #prebiotics. I noticed that in addition to an improvement in my symptoms, I noticed an improvement with my anxiety and depression. It seems science is catching up with what I surmised -- that Covid messes with one's microbiome, which in turn affects our brains and other systems!

A new possible explanation for long COVID could lead to a simple treatment for some patients

By Erin Prater, October 16, 2023

"While it might seem logical that neurologic long COVID symptoms like brain fog, memory loss, and depression are caused by the presence of virus in the brain, researchers in Pennsylvania propose a different theory: that virus lingering in the gut causes such symptoms in a round-about way.

It works like this: SARS-CoV-2 lingering in the gut causes persistent inflammation, which leads to reduced production of serotonin—a chemical that sends messages between the brain and other parts of the body. It also plays a key role in regulating sleep, mood, digestion, and blood clotting, among other bodily functions.

A lack of serotonin, in turn, disrupts connectivity between the peripheral nervous system and the brain, causing neurologic symptoms."
