The last quality, perseverance, I particularly respect: it is the very hinge of all virtues. — On looking over the world, the cause of nine parts in ten of the lamentable failures which occur in men’s undertakings & darken and degrade so much of their history, lies not in the want of talents or the will to use them, but in the vacillating and desultory mode of using them — in flying from object to object, in starting away at each little disgust, and thus applying the force which might conquer any one difficulty to a series of difficulties so large that no human force can conquer them.
The smallest brook on earth, by continual running, has hollowed out for itself a considerable valley to flow in: the wildest tempest, by its occasional raging, over-turns a few cottages, uproots a few trees, and leaves after a short space no mark behind it. Commend me therefore to the Dutch virtue of perseverance! Without it all the rest are little better than fairy gold, which glitters in your purse, but when taken to the market proves to be — slate or cinders.Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) Scottish essayist and historian

"Zombie" #COVID19 fragments linger for some, causing severe disease outcomes, new research reveals
A new finding could be the reason why some people have long COVID or die from SARS-CoV-2
By Nicole Karlis
Published February 2, 2024 3:02PM (EST)"This suggested that more serious COVID-19 outcomes are a result of these leftover fragments that are essentially overstimulating the immune system."

Is It Dangerous to Keep Getting COVID-19?
Story by Alice Park
January 10, 2024"[#Covid] reinfections aren't harmless. As cases continue to rise and more variants arrive on the scene, infectious-disease experts are warning that repeat infections could have cumulative, lasting effects.
“'There is some early evidence starting to show that if you had COVID-19, there can be all sorts of problems after getting infected' and reinfected, says Dr. Robert Murphy, professor of medicine and executive director of the Havey Institute for Global Health at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. 'We are just at the beginning of learning about them.'"

‘Finally we’re believed’: #LongCovid sufferers hail new research saying they should avoid intense exercise
Maira Butt
Thu, January 4, 2024"Oonagh Cousins had just been pre-selected for the Tokyo Olympics when she was hit with Covid in March 2020.
"A new virus which would go on to have far-reaching consequences for the whole world was something that initially just felt like a mild cold to her.
It was only when the now-28-year-old was unable to take part in vigorous training exercises with her rowing team that the reality of her long Covid symptoms dawned on her.
"'I realised then, I was in it for the long haul,' she tells The Independent.
"Nearly four years on and long Covid has forced Oonagh, from Brentford, to completely retire from rowing because of the crippling symptoms."

Norfolk #LongCovid sufferer feels a 'changed person' after taking new #probiotic treatment
April 19, 2022
"In the first study Prof Thomas showed treating the gut to a blend of five different friendly bacteria called #lactobacillus #probiotics, combined with a chicory-rich ingredient known as an #inulin, helped with symptoms.
"In a second study, he found that a capsule containing a mix of other natural substances known as phytochemicals can significantly help further.
"He said: 'In our research group we designed a study looking at whether we could concentrate certain foods which would help some of the symptoms of #Covid.
"'The reason we used a capsule is we are able to concentrate foods in a much greater degree than you'd be able to eat.
"'Also you can take them in the morning, at lunchtime and have the foods that you wouldn't normally in a British diet take at those times. So things like chamomile, pomegranate, #turmeric, citrus bioflavonoids which come from #berries and things.'"

1/2 - So, I've been treating my own #LongCovid with #TurmericMilk, #VitaminD3, and #probiotics from various food sources (some with #VitaminK2), and consumed with #fiber-rich #prebiotics. I noticed that in addition to an improvement in my symptoms, I noticed an improvement with my anxiety and depression. It seems science is catching up with what I surmised -- that Covid messes with one's microbiome, which in turn affects our brains and other systems!
A new possible explanation for long COVID could lead to a simple treatment for some patients
By Erin Prater, October 16, 2023
"While it might seem logical that neurologic long COVID symptoms like brain fog, memory loss, and depression are caused by the presence of virus in the brain, researchers in Pennsylvania propose a different theory: that virus lingering in the gut causes such symptoms in a round-about way.
It works like this: SARS-CoV-2 lingering in the gut causes persistent inflammation, which leads to reduced production of serotonin—a chemical that sends messages between the brain and other parts of the body. It also plays a key role in regulating sleep, mood, digestion, and blood clotting, among other bodily functions.
A lack of serotonin, in turn, disrupts connectivity between the peripheral nervous system and the brain, causing neurologic symptoms."
