Climate crisis could force wild vanilla plants and pollinating insects apart, threatening global supply
Researchers find that a reduced overlap of suitable #habitats for #vanilla #plants and the #insects that #pollinate them could threaten the survival of wild vanilla

  3. Native #bees #pollinate an estimated 80% of flowering #plants around the world, & understanding the #pollinators’ behavior helps us sustain the production of our #food. #Forests, #prairies, #grasslands, #deserts & #wetlands rely on bees to maintain their unique #biodiversity. The more we track bees, the better we can understand the role different species play in the pollination of #crops such as pumpkins in the Mid-Atlantic, apples in Pennsylvania, tomatoes in California & blueberries in Oregon.

  4. Ken Meyer has one mission: protect pollinators, protect life. Backed by 400+ science credits, he’s devoted his life to saving Earth’s vital species. The Pollinator Project teams up with schools to teach pollinator health and eco-living through hands-on gardening, research, and habitat building for all ages.

  8. TIL: All of the honeybees in the USA… are immigrants. The “European Honeybee” was brought to North America in the 1600’s and they are doing just fine, being domesticated farm animals. There are plenty of farmers looking out for their honeybees because they are an integral part of the agriculture industry. It’s the 19,999 OTHER BEE SPECIES that need our help!

  13. Folks, #pollinators like #butterflies
and #bees #pollinate every second morsel of #food we eat!

And having #wildflowers around in our great #cities ensures that they do well, and in the process, ensure that we eat well.

  14. But we aren't going to focus on the lurid #latin of this pretty flower's #botanical name.

Instead, here's a native #bee about to make headway into one of the blossoms, to drink deeply of its #nectar, and 'bee' (pardon the pun) on its merry way - to do what it does best - #pollinate!

One of the gods of war,
    Punished for his transgressions
By being turned into a cat
    With a permanent sneer
    And unfathomable eyes,

    Pollinates the poppies by
    Rubbing his wire fur against
The petals of death in an
Attempt to pay back his debts
To those whose fate he was.

    Under the
    Heaviness of
    His being
    He prays
    To the kinder

    Gods to let
    The flowers
    Grow and bring
    Decay back
    To bloom.

  21. While honey bees 🐝 are very efficient pollinators 🌸, this *preprint* (I.e., not yet peer reviewed) suggests that their #pollination efforts don’t produce as fit offspring as pollination by #native #pollinators.

The authors suggest this is due to honey bees spending time on single plants (and thus facilitating selfing) rather than moving between plants (which would increase cross-fertilization).

  23. There’s been a well-documented shift toward earlier #springtime #flowering in many #plants as the world warms. The trend alarms biologists because it has the potential to disrupt carefully choreographed interactions between plants and creatures; #butterflies, #bees, #birds, #bats and others—that #pollinate them.

But, in 1903, such a #Moth was discovered.
21 years after Darwin's death, his guess was proved correct.
