# 312 contd.Bumblebee food demand peaks during March to June. Shortage of food during these critical months can result in dire consequences for colony survival/queen production and risks local population extinction.

A recent study utilising computer modelling and focusing on two common European #bumblebees indicates that #bees need food up to a month earlier than when many recommended ‘pollinator friendly’ plant species actually flower.

Had a chat recently with the lovely Samantha for The Animal Friendly Podcast.
We covered a lot, meandering gently but honestly through why we’re here, what you can do to help #bees, the #honeybee nature reserve hoax, the role of #farmers in helping bees, poisoned ‘bee friendly #flowers and all points in between. You can listen in here:

#11.
Keeping honey bees does NOT help our declining native wild bee populations.
In fact keeping honey bees means more bees competing for ever more precious forage.‘Bees are for life not just for honey.’

Inside the narrow waist (petiole) of #bumblebees cooler blood pumped from the abdomen is heated up as it passes warm blood returning from the head and thorax.

We had a couple of dodgy moments where this owlet got stranded away from the nest box (trying to fly before ready) and had to be assisted back to the box. Seems to be getting the hang of it now!
Shows the value of having people on-site full time and fully engaged.

#Cinnabar #moth #caterpillars on #ragwort here this week.
First noticed a small number here about three years ago.
This year they are everywhere.
Ragwort - a much maligned #wildflower - is the larval food plant of this magnificent moth.
Delighted to see them thrive here.

Now that’s some serious pollen transportation.

So I take a moment this morning to film the tadpole rescue tank we have here.
And this lovely #humblebee lands beside me and gives me a glimpse of her mid morning routine.
Tidies herself up with a bit of a groom. Then proceeds to settle on a leaf and take a snooze - see my next post!

As with sleeping dogs leave resting bees lie - for up to an hour before intervening. (Unless of course she is in imminent danger whereby she should be carefully moved to a safe place). If after about an hour she is still present then she may need assistance. 5/8

These between flight stopovers can last for up to an hour and #bees are not always careful about where they take them - sometimes the middle of a footpath can be the ‘ideal’ spot!
So if you see a big #bumblebee chilling on the ground don’t always presume she needs rescuing! 4/8#bumblebees #beesofmastodon

Hence you will observe queens flying low to the ground zig-zagging across the landscape - they’re house-hunting. Stopping to explore in long grass and vegetation, hollows in trees, stone walls, under sheds and even compost heaps. During this time bumblebee queens spend a lot of their time resting between flights. 3/8

Bumblebee queens emerge in early spring from hibernation and immediately need to feed - that’s why early flowering plants are so important. Apart from feeding, their mission at this time is to find a suitable site to establish a nest. 2/8
