Forgotten Frequencies, Vol. 2: Territories – Available Now!
It’s what the title says, my latest ambient soundscape album, Forgotten Frequencies, Volume 2: Territories is out today! Huzzah!
Forgotten Frequencies is an auditory exploration of the world of the Bell Forging Cycle. As before, all of these are all long looping tracks, each around ten minutes in length, designed to be environmental aural impressions of the Territories. That’s right, in this second volume, we’ve stepped away from the warrens of the big city and into the wilds beyond.
You’ll walk alongside travelers along the Big Ninety, explore the city of Syringa, and take time to reflect at a Road Priest’s chapel. You’ll hear the caravan settling in for laager around a campfire, passengers enjoying gaming and music onboard the Gamble, and perhaps even venture into more sinister locales.

These are intended to be background tracks for reading, but there are plenty of other uses as well. They’d make perfect background sounds for a tabletop RPG session with your friends, or good atmospheric sounds for focus. My hope is you find them relaxing and they add a pleasant ambient rustle to your day.
Big thanks to my buddy J. Rushing for stepping in to play the role of a guitar picking roader on the fourth track “At Laager,” his efforts add a lot to that scene. Just played Wasteland 2. Not recommended.
Although at first engaging and both a nostalgic successor to the original Fallouts as well as a worthy sequel, Wasteland 2 becomes offensively, unbearably long. The amount of time the game demanded I invest became so absurdly large that I completely lost any interest in any aspect of the game and uninstalled.

back in the late 90s i had played Fallout and was hungry for more of the same. a few months later, this gem showed up on the abandonware site Home of the Underdogs as one of its undisputed Top Dogs. the DOS version's palette was unbelievably ugly in EGA, and the controls were painful to death with. but after 15 minutes was absolutely rapt. it really did feel like a low-res Fallout in hardcore mode.
Wasteland is notoriously difficult by design: there are no save games as we know them. there is *one* save: it saves the entire world state back to diskette. if your party membr is critically wounded in battle, that data is written to disk. if that member goes from critical to mortally wounded, and then dies a few hours later - they're now permadead. no resurrection. no savescumming: they're dead and will never come back. (there are workarounds of course: if things are going south fast, you can eject the diskette and reboot your computer before it has the chance to save which i have done, many many times.) 😅
the game world is big, the skill system complex, and the clues to advance the plot are scattered all over the world map. it is merciless, and demands absolute focus to keep your party alive.it makes Fallout look like a vacationer's weekend in arizona.
this is the kind of game a kid got as a gift from their parents when they were 12, and then spent the next two years trying to get to the end. i have never managed to finish the game in the 25+ years i've played it, despite trying many times.
despite, or maybe because of this, the game has always had a special place in my heart. like the way you love a mean kitty.
a decade ago i made a huge mistake: i gave my only folio/album version of Wasteland to a friend, who in turn, sold it on ebay. 🙄
after many years of hunting locally for a replacement copy, i never managed to find one. the vasty majority of Apple // software here is pirated, so it's rare to even find a boxed game. so i finally gave in and bought what turned out to be a pristine copy from a seller on ebay. it cost an arm and a leg, and i don't regret this even a bit.
here it is. an unbelievable amount of love and care has went into designing the packaging. Barry Jackson's cover and interior art goes the distance to define the mood and texture of the game.

The year is 2027. Email is #unreliable; little gets past #Gmail filters without a contract to receive your #email. #Governments don't stop it because (a) they have a contract, and (b) they don't understand how email works. Or worked.
#Tech companies finally realize that #SS7 is #insecure. Phone calls and texts can't be #trusted. Machine-learning-generated ("AI") audio and video means video and voice calls are doubly cursed - too many #FAANG executives have had embarrassing public #failures, falling #victim to the corporate equivalent of the grandparent #scam.
Few people use #TOTP, because the tech #companies don't promote it, they each call it something else and make it work differently, and they all want you to use their "app" rather than the standard 3-line script that can generate the correct code given a key and the current timestamp. The technically-minded try to educate their relatives and friends as part of the free-tech-support assumption, but no one cares.
#Account #recovery now involves waiting at home to sign for an envelope delivered by the lowest-cost (and therefore bribe-able) courier to the #registered home address of the account. Millions each year lose their email, #photos, videos, "purchased" digital #content, password vaults, etc because they've moved since they set up the account, or they have a P.O. box and companies don't believe those #exist.
The #internet is a vast digital #wasteland - wait, a saviour onstage: "Walled Garden-Net!".

📺 Anyone catch the new season premiere of #Fallout? This burnt-out car dealership in England looked like a scene from the post-apocalyptic Wasteland. Twisted car shells and orange oxidised metal filled the collapsed warehouse, giving the site some serious Fallout vibes.
Around 150 vehicles were inside when the fire took hold. Heat levels were so high that window glass melted and pooled across the floor.
