  3. The nuc hives seem to be doing good. The green one has more pollen coming in, the white one is taking more syrup.

  4. Some video of the hive entrances. Sunny and 63F/17C. That West hive is less active but those bees have a different schedule than the other two. Seems like a lot less Carniolan types in that hive.

  5. The bees today. Very busy, pollen coming in, and the West hive having a traffic jam caused by a bunch of drones on the landing board.

I haven't seen any activity at the bait hive and the bees at the other empty hives seem to be off target and taking a break.

  6. Bees bringing in the pollen on Saturday morning. I estimate between 100-120 bees per minute with pollen. That could be over 1.5 grams of pollen per minute or 500 grams in 6 hours. More than a pound of pollen and they work hours than that. That's based on them only carrying 15mg of pollen but I read they can carry 30mg.

  7. Sunny and 41F / 5C out before noon and all three hives had bees flying. I even saw a big drone fly back into one hive.

  14. TIL: All of the honeybees in the USA… are immigrants. The “European Honeybee” was brought to North America in the 1600’s and they are doing just fine, being domesticated farm animals. There are plenty of farmers looking out for their honeybees because they are an integral part of the agriculture industry. It’s the 19,999 OTHER BEE SPECIES that need our help!

  15. Furthermore, Western honey bees quickly lose interest in blueberries when other types of plants are in flower (cue the Distracted Boyfriend meme). 17. National Public Radio aired a segment on July 3rd that implied blueberries are completely reliant on Western honey bees. That is false. Blueberries are native to North America and are pollinated quite well, thank you, by native bumble bees and solitary bees. And growers who pack their fields with hives of (non-native) Western honey bees likely contribute to the decline of these indigenous pollinators. #HoneyBee #ApisMellifera #IntroducedSpecies #NonNative #BeeKeeping #bees #blueberry #vaccinium #pollination #npr #entomology #bees
