What places on Earth are most resilient to global catastrophic risk? Our new review in Global Challenges is the first study to look at this across nuclear war, near-Earth objects, large volcanic eruptions, cyberattacks, high altitude electromagnetic pulse, geomagnetic storms and pandemics.
Australia is plausibly the most resilient place, but even it is reliant on trade for fuel, medicine and fertiliser. There is no place on Earth which is a complete refuge.
Four factors appeared most consistently: geographic isolation, self-sufficiency in food production, governance quality (democratic institutions, low inequality, low corruption, social cohesion) and decentralisation. The first two are largely fixed. The last two are modifiable through policy, improve resilience against every category of catastrophe we examined, and also make societies better places to live. All of them are currently trending the wrong way, which is bad, but also means we can work towards a more resilient and more livable society at the same time.

Labour’s priorities are totally wrong
This week, the government published the long-delayed Defence Investment Plan, which increases military spending by a further £15 billion, with military spending planned to rise even more to nearly £80 billion per year by 2029. This will be at the expense of other much-needed projects.
Keir Starmer said that the government will be spending £64 billion on nuclear weapons over the next four years. This is 20% of our defence spending. It’s enough money to build 64 brand new hospitals or 18 massive offshore wind farms, which would make us much more self-reliant.
Labour’s priorities are totally wrong. I acknowledge the threat of Russia, but what use are nuclear weapons against them? Relying on nuclear weapons drags the world closer towards a nuclear conflict. Should they ever be used, they won’t just kill millions, if not billions, of innocent people, but they would throw so much ash up into the atmosphere that it would lead to a nuclear winter, where the sun is blocked out. This would mean ecocide as well as genocide, and it would be impossible to grow food.
Using drones in warfare is deeply concerning. In Gaza, Israel has programmed drones to broadcast the sound of Palestinian babies crying or children shouting “I want my mother”. Of course, this brings out concerned residents, looking for the child, at which point the soldiers shoot them.

Defence spending should be directed to defence, not to weapons of mass destruction. What we need are systems that can protect us from drone warfare.
Meanwhile, our greatest security threat is the climate crisis. We need our forces ready to set up emergency flood barriers, rescue flood victims, fight wildfires and support the NHS when heatwaves overwhelm it. Governments’ priority should be urgently reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and preparing our nation to cope with the more extreme weather just around the corner.

Nuclear war is horrible and I hope it never happens. Yet, there are only a few countries that actually have nuclear weapons and the power to use them is concentrated in just a few individuals. This means the vast majority of the global population has no say on the question if nuclear weapons will be used.
However, due to a potential nuclear winter, which could follow a nuclear war, even countries on the other side of the globe could be directly affected by a nuclear war. This impact could be quite severe and as they have no direct measure to prevent it, these countries should think about how they would prepare. Also, many of the preparations that would be helpful for a nuclear winter would also help for the climatic consequences of large volcanic eruptions or asteroid impacts. So, they should be done anyway.

I woke up to my dog sneezing and my skin itching because it’s FUCKING COLD outside. I filled the humidifier, set the heat to the daytime setting, and then checked the weather network. I currently reside in Brockville, and it’s damn cold, but I also saw the temperature in my childhood hometown of Marathon. Comparison may be the thief of joy, but it also gives incredible context and reminds me that I have experienced much worse than this moment. "Since Russia’s war in Ukraine started, President #Putin and other Russian officials have made repeated nuclear threats, in an apparent attempt to deter Western countries from any direct military intervention. If Russia were to ever start—voluntarily or accidentally—nuclear war with the United States and other NATO countries, the number of devastating nuclear explosions involved in a full exchange could waft more than 150 Tg of soot into the stratosphere, leading to a nuclear winter that would disrupt virtually all forms of life on Earth over several decades.
"Stratospheric soot injections associated with different nuclear war scenarios would lead to a wide variety of major climatic and biogeochemical changes, including transformations of the atmosphere, oceans, and land. Such global climate changes will be more long-lasting than previously thought because models of the 1980s did not adequately represent the stratospheric plume rise. It is now understood that soot from nuclear #firestorms would rise much higher into the stratosphere than once imagined, where soot removal mechanisms in the form of 'black rains' are slow. Once the smoke is heated by sunlight it can self-loft to altitudes as high as 80 kilometers (50 miles), penetrating the mesosphere."

This program upgrades old #Nuclear Fission #warheads into newer Nuclear Fusion warheads, and generally maintains the current arsenal. It does NOT increase the supply of #NuclearWeapons, and newer Fusion warheads actually have FAR LESS #NuclearFallout than the old ones: this decreases the risk of #civilian exposure to nuclear elements, and #NuclearWinter.
