  2. Mike Mills – „Jahrhundertfrauen“ (2016)

(ARD, Wh.)

  7. The songs from High Society are SUCH a mixed bag.

Louis Armstrong makes everything he touches gold.

Frank's two ballads, "You're Sensational" and "Mind If I Make Love To You" are insufferably insipid, and frankly I don't know how the second got past the Hays Code.

"True Love" has an exquisitely delicious melody, but the lyrics are saccharine and meh.

"Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" puts a grin on your face, and "Did You Ever" is unquestionably the show-stopper.

"Now You Have (Has?) Jazz" is an ACTUAL BOP and Bing is adorably fun but also impossibly square.

  8. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong – Ella and Louis (1956, US)

Our next spotlight is on number 1008 on The List, submitted by Annaspanner.

While our last spotlight looked at a globetrotter of an album, this one looks at a homebody of an album, a “I think I’ll just stay in” album. Put this one on and it’s like Ella and Louis just stopped by with a few friends (Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Buddy Rich) and instruments in tow – just to say hello, see how you’re doing, bring over that pie recipe you were asking about – and spontaneously started playing whatever tune came to mind before grabbing their coats and heading back into the night. Gorgeous.

  10. "When the Saints Go Marching In", often referred to as simply "The Saints", is a traditional #AfricanAmericanSpiritual. It originated as a Christian #hymn, but is often played by #jazz bands. One of the most famous jazz recordings of "The Saints" was made on May 13, 1938, by #LouisArmstrong and his orchestra. The song is sometimes confused with a similarly titled 1896 composition: "When the Saints Are Marching In", by #KatharinePurvis (lyrics).

  15. Musical Interlude: Well, folks seemed to like yesterday's sample of Satchmo, so I thought I'd post another for fun. Here's a great tribute to his hometown.

"Christmas in New Orleans," performed by Louis Armstrong, with Benny Carter and His Orchestra.
