  1. Arlene Smith, the original lead singer of the Chantels, passed away a couple of weeks ago. Here's an early video clip of the group lip-syncing to their best-known hit at Dick Clark's Saturday Beech-Nut Show:

  4. I added a few #doowop #music to my playlist, including Billy Joel's The Longest Time and I have to say...this thing is a rich gift

I mean, obvs everyone loves it (I remember freezing in my tracks the very first time I heard it on the radio in the 80s). But also consider the fact that he could have made a lot less song and still had an enduring classic.

It's got *5* verses and 2 bridges in not 3, not 4 but *6* part harmony.

(On top of the brilliant lines like "I'll take my chances, I forgot how nice romance is" and of course singing it all himself.)

  5. "Silhouettes" is a song made famous by the American #doowop group #theRays in 1957, peaking at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. A competing version by #theDiamonds was also successful. In 1965 it was a number 5 hit in the US for #HermansHermits, and in 1990 it was a number 10 hit in the UK for #CliffRichard.

    And somehow... Todd Blanche.

My most ridiculously catchy tune yet.

  8. "Sh-Boom" ("Life Could Be a Dream") is a #doowop song by the #RAndB vocal group #theChords. It was written by James Keyes, Claude Feaster, Carl Feaster, Floyd F. McRae, and William Edwards, members of the Chords, and was released in 1954. It is sometimes considered the first doo-wop or #rockAndRoll record to reach the top ten on the pop charts (as opposed to the R&B charts), as it was a top-10 hit that year for both the Chords (who first recorded the song).

  16. Thinking about starting a doo-wop group called "Johnny Deuce & The Chamberpots."

[Note: I post this joke once per year on Masto and only one person has ever so much as acknowledged it. I think it's funny, but hey...what do I know?]
