  13. RON GEESIN
    A Raise Of Eyebrows
    1967 UK pressing

One of the weirdest and most eccentric underground albums of the #60s .

It’s an absolute masterpiece of electronic experimentation and absurdist British art; mixing humorous and satirical spoken word with musique concrète, avant-garde jazz, all built with tape manipulation and sound collage.

Throughout the record, Geesin uses milk bottles and gas cans, along with more traditional instrumentation like guitar, banjo, and piano.

It’s also mixed very interestingly and uniquely. Sounds ping-pong back and forth between channels, creating very unique stereo placements.

The album is a real showcase for ALL of Geesin’s talents, and he played everything himself, at his home studio in Notting Hill, London.

A real wild and unique artistic experience.

  14. Clouds

Joni releases her second album on May 1, 1969. She continues her look at love, loss and the heavy social issues of the time. It includes her classic, Both Sides Now. Stephen Stills helps out on bass and guitar. Joni produced almost the entire album and that's her self-portrait on the cover. The album garnered her a Grammy for Best Folk Performance 1969. "The Fiddle and the Drum" still haunts and is still relevant today. #jonimitchell #clouds #60smusic #music

  16. VARIOUS ARTISTS
Anthology Of British Rock (The Pye Years - A Compleat Collection)
    1985 U.S. 2xLP pressing

Bought this from a thrift store this morning.
The whole first side (and the first song of side B) is all David Bowie, and it’s got other great songs by Donovan, Sandie Shaw, The Kinks, and Status Quo amongst others.

    Pretty solid $1 find, man.
    Cool little compilation.

The two Donovan tunes are without question his two best songs, IMO.

  22. JOHNNY CASH
    Now, There Was A Song!
    1960 Canada pressing

A bit of a change of pace for last spin of the night.
I wanted to listen to some Johnny, so I did a blind pull from the Cash section of my library, and this was the one.

This is one of Cash’s “songbook preservation” records; focusing on traditional folk and country songs. Much older songs that had long been in the American consciousness, but stripped down and totally Cash-ified.

Old railroad tunes, frontier songs and murder ballads, all carrying heavy weight with Johnny’s baritone voice. Songs of moral compass, regrets, the pain of heartbreak and longing.

This kind of acts like a bridge between Cash’s SUN stuff and the kind of records he made in the late 60s.

    Repeat after me:

    ALL CASH IS GOOD CASH.

  23. All the squares go home!

April 27, 1968 ~ Sly and The Family Stone release Dance To The Music. The album lays the foundation for funk music to follow and is the standard bearer for psychedelic soul. Beyond the great music, the band was a rare example of a racially integrated, multi-gender group. Ah, the communal spirit of the 60's. Dig it. #slyandthefamilystone #60smusic #musicsky #music #musiciansky #rockmusic #soul #rnb

  27. THE BYRDS
    The Notorious Byrd Brothers
    1968 Canada pressing

    Last spin of the night.

Unequivocally one of my three all-time favorite #60s albums.

This was the very first Byrds album I heard start to finish. My uncles (all 9 of them) all listened to country and folk music, but a few branched out into the more #psychedelic areas of those genres.

That’s where I first heard The Notorious Byrd Brothers. From my Uncle Ed, who sadly, passed away last week.

I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to hear this album without thinking about him, and how he taught me that they were much more than those few hit songs I heard on oldies and classic rock radio as a kid.

This album features a lot of different studio effects for the time, & it’s one of the first LPs to ever feature a Moog synth.

Gene Clark actually came back for a few weeks, & may or may NOT be on some backing vocals on 2 songs.
