Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, “A Taste of Honey” from Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965)

I didn’t set out to be so literal with the band name, I just wanted the sound, and here we are. Is it cheesy? Well, dairy-adjacent - but c'mon, it is in fact a delight.

I have learned that this song was originally written by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow for the 1960 Broadway version of the 1958 British play A Taste of Honey,, which was also made into a film of the same name in 1961, and that this recording earned four Grammys! In addition, #TheBeatles recorded and released a vocal version of this song on their first album, Please Please Me. I somehow had never connected those dots.

If memory serves, Mom had a crush on #HerbAlpert. I get it, Mom.

  2. Dr Victor Olaiya & his All-Stars

    amf.didiermary.fr/victor-olaiy

Dr Victor Olaiya is considered the bridge between Ghanaian Highlife and what would become Afrobeat.

His musical style was influenced by James Brown, with horn parts harmonized in Brown’s style, as opposed to the mostly unison lines of Afrobeat. The music includes the swinging percussion of Tony Allen, but not the syncopated style that [...]

  7. Bit of a #showerThought ... John Fogerty definitely has a unique pronunciation of a lot of things, but WHAT THE HELL accent is he doing in the song Proud Mary?

It's like a weird attempt at Southern but with some hilarious “oy" Yiddish vowel sounds in there.

    "woykin’ for the man”
    "big wheel keep on toynin’”
    "proud mary keep on boynin’”

    🤣

I've grown up hearing this song, never really thought about his "accent" til recently though. #music #60sMusic #1960s

Buzzworthy not only because of Clapton, Winwood, Grech and Baker but also because of the album cover. Bob Seidemann, who has photographed the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, is hired to take the cover shot.

It's different from his previous albums which didn't sit well with some of the tight-asses in the folky community. There weren't any "protest" songs ... but some inward, personal and surreal lyrics .. set Dylan up nicely for what was to follow.

  20. THE SONICS
    Here Are The Sonics!!!
    2020 UK MONO reissue

It’s 7:30 am and I’m about to make my neighbors really unhappy.

Full volume wake call for everybody with one of the greatest albums of all time, period.

Some call them the original punk rock band.
I suppose there’s SOME truth to that, but the fact of the matter is that they were just a great band period, regardless of genre.

These songs are just incredible, and they sound as fresh and as brand new today as they did in the #60s .
Just an incredibly important and savage rock band.

  21. SANDY BULL
    Inventions
    1965 Canada pressing

Absolutely perfect record for a rainy, thundery Thursday night on the island.

Pretty much a flawless album start to finish, and unquestionably Sandy Bull’s magnum opus masterpiece.

It pretty much has it all.
Incredible folky guitar playing, Middle Eastern vibes, drone-y experimental improvisation, and some killer #jazz flair courtesy of drummer Billy Higgins.

  24. FARGO
    I See It Now
    1969 Canada pressing

Last spin of the night goes to a bit of a cult classic.

    This was Fargo’s only record.
It’s a folky, breezy, slightly psychedelic baroque pop album with 11 wonderful tunes on it.

RCA did very little to promote it (which is crazy, because it’s SO GOOD), the album tanked, and the band broke up.

The vocal harmonies are fucking beautiful, and the little orchestral flourishes are exquisite.

It deserves reappraisal and a new audience, not just those who like obscure psych-pop.

If a few of you go and listen to this and get turned onto it from my post, then I’d be thrilled.

    REALLY good record.
