  1. FRED NEIL
    Everybody's Talkin'
    1971 U.S. reissue
    [orange labels]

A masterful songwriter, and a dude that had a LOT to do with a young Bob Dylan hitting the stage at Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village.

It still shocks me how many people think that “Everybody’s Talkin’” is a Harry Nilsson song, when in fact it was Neil who wrote it.
That song only became a hit when Nilsson’s version was featured in the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy.

SUCH a hit that Neil’s self-titled ‘66 album (THIS ONE), was reissued under the name Everybody’s Talkin’, in order to capitalize on the film’s (and song’s) success.

The album however is much more than that one song.
The Dolphins is absolutely beautiful, as is Neil’s take on the traditional tune “Sweet Cocaine”.

A laid back and stellar 38 minutes.
    Just such a great record.

  20. Dr Victor Olaiya & his All-Stars

    amf.didiermary.fr/victor-olaiy

Dr Victor Olaiya is considered the bridge between Ghanaian Highlife and what would become Afrobeat.

His musical style was influenced by James Brown, with horn parts harmonized in Brown’s style, as opposed to the mostly unison lines of Afrobeat. The music includes the swinging percussion of Tony Allen, but not the syncopated style that [...]

  29. BILL EVANS TRIO
    Waltz For Debby
    1985 U.S. reissue

Another perfect choice for a delightful, lazy Sunday afternoon.

I’m a big fan of the quiet-ish mellow Bill Evans records, and other than You Must Believe In Spring, this might be my favorite one.

It’s so laid back, so beautiful, and one of those all-purpose any time, anywhere kind of records.

    Maximum Sunday chillage.

The Who, “The Kids Are Alright” soundtrack, 1979

I encountered this film at the height of my Who mania, and it was EVERYTHING to me. It has grainy black-and-white footage of early gigs, TV appearances including the moment on the Smothers Brothers when Keith destroyed Pete’s hearing with explosives (not a metaphor), performances at The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus and at Woodstock, the video for “Success Story,” an outstanding deep cut of John’s (with the studio recording from “Who By Numbers," not included on the soundtrack album), their last appearance with Keith at Shephardson Studios, staged expressly for the film, and more. What it didn't have is the song “The Kids Are Alright.” (Seems they’ve added it onto the later DVD and Blu-ray releases behind additional closing credits, but I liked their little joke better.)

One of the best segments of the film/selections on the album, and itself somewhat in keeping with the “kid” theme, is their performance of Mose Allison’s “Young Man’s Blues.” The attitude of the original was already pure punk; in The Who’s hands, this jazz/blues piano piece becomes muscular, even menacing.

    They fucking kill it.

  32. KENSINGTON MARKET
    Aardvark
    1969 Canada pressing

I found this record in a thrift store around 2007 when I first moved to B.C..
I had never heard of them before, so I took a gamble.

They were a Canadian band from Toronto, and Aardvark contains wistful, breezy, #psychedelic pop songs.
Couple odd facts about the personnel here:
There’s some occasional keyboard here played by Jon Mills-Cockell, who is better known for his role in the more well-known Canadian band Syrinx.
And oddly, drummer Jimmy Watson is Van Morrison’s cousin.

With the exception of “Dorian” (which pushes nearly 7 minutes), all these songs are around 3 minutes or less, making for an enjoyable, compact listen of #60s #Psych Canadiana.
