Kieran Hebden, the English electronic musician who typically releases music under the name Four Tet, has opted to make his latest release nearly impossible to find on streaming services.  Set aside that the artist, album, and track listing are all written in unpronounceable “wingdings,” this is an engaging mix of spiritual and danceable tracks.

It seems inexplicable that the Rolling Stones are still releasing new music in the 2020s much less some of their best music since the 1970s.  The Blues Rock extravaganza features guest appearances from Steve Winwood, Robert Smith (of The Cure), Bruno Mars, and Paul McCartney, as well as some of the final contributions of the late drummer Charlie Watts.

Artist: Nia Archives

English DJ/producer/singer/songwriter Nia Archives is a self-described junglist, but this album doesn’t fit one genre.  The tracks explore R&B, Indie Rock, and Dream Pop to the extent that I sometimes forget that it’s the same artist.

This Cuban-American ensemble keeps alive the mambo traditions of the mid 20th century.  The energy of their performance is captured in this live in the studio recording.

The Who, “The Kids Are Alright” soundtrack, 1979

I encountered this film at the height of my Who mania, and it was EVERYTHING to me. It has grainy black-and-white footage of early gigs, TV appearances including the moment on the Smothers Brothers when Keith destroyed Pete’s hearing with explosives (not a metaphor), performances at The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus and at Woodstock, the video for “Success Story,” an outstanding deep cut of John’s (with the studio recording from “Who By Numbers," not included on the soundtrack album), their last appearance with Keith at Shephardson Studios, staged expressly for the film, and more. What it didn't have is the song “The Kids Are Alright.” (Seems they’ve added it onto the later DVD and Blu-ray releases behind additional closing credits, but I liked their little joke better.)

One of the best segments of the film/selections on the album, and itself somewhat in keeping with the “kid” theme, is their performance of Mose Allison’s “Young Man’s Blues.” The attitude of the original was already pure punk; in The Who’s hands, this jazz/blues piano piece becomes muscular, even menacing.

They fucking kill it.

Hay hechos de la historia que marcan el fin de una era. El festival gratuito de #Altamont, llevado adelante el 6 de diciembre de 1969 en un autódromo abandonado al norte de California, significó el comienzo del ocaso del sueño hippie. Y quienes se llevaron toda la atención no fue ninguna de las bandas que dijeron presente allí sino los Hell´s Angels, un grupo de motociclistas que habían sido contratados para seguridad y se excedieron en sus atribuciones. Lo cierto, es que el recital ya desde un principio, se mostró con deficiencias de logística por la cercanía entre el anuncio y la fecha en que se iba a llevar adelante. El día del concierto fue un verdadero infierno, las 300.000 personas que se acercaron a disfrutar fueron testigos de escenas de vandalismo durante toda la jornada aunque lo peor se vivió mientras estaban en el escenario los #RollingStones, cuando los encargados de la protección asesinaron de 5 puñalazos a Meredith Hunter un joven negro con el que habían tenido un encontronazo y empuñaba un arma de fuego.
