Stumbled on this post in a vintage Boston group. I think folks here will enjoy this...
-----------------------------------------------------------
Boston, July 18, 1972.
The Rolling Stones were supposed to play the Boston Garden that night. Fifteen thousand people were already inside, waiting for Mick, Keith and the boys to show up. Only problem was, the Stones weren't anywhere near Boston. Fog had forced their plane to land at T.F. Green in Rhode Island, and while they were waiting to get out of there, an altercation with police ended with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and three others getting hauled off to jail. Meanwhile, back at the Garden, 15,000 people were sitting around wondering what the hell was going on.
Stevie Wonder kept playing to buy some time, but everybody knew nobody had come to the Garden that night just to see Stevie. Boston was also dealing with trouble in the South End, so Mayor Kevin White had a decision to make. He needed his cops in the streets, but he also had a Garden full of angry Stones fans who had been waiting all night. So White went down there himself and started making calls. Somehow he got the Stones sprung from the Rhode Island lockup on $50 bail and into his personal custody.
Then the mayor walked onto the Garden stage, sleeves rolled up and tie loosened, and told 15,000 people, “The Stones have been busted, but I have sprung them!” The place went nuts. White arranged for the MBTA to stay open late, kept the crowd occupied while the Stones headed north with a police escort, and at one point was even throwing a football into the stands. You couldn't make this stuff up.
The Stones finally hit the Garden stage around 12:45 in the morning and played until after 2. They were hours late, but the crowd was still there. Nobody went home empty-handed, and Boston avoided what could have been one hell of a mess.
That's the kind of Boston story I love. No fancy press conference. No committee meeting. Just Kevin White walking into a packed Garden full of pissed-off people and basically saying, “Relax. They're coming.”
And somehow, the mayor pulled it off.
The Stones played. The crowd went home happy and Boston got one hell of a story.

#nowplaying Picked this up on sale for €60. The listing said there was an Atmos mix included but oddly I couldn’t find anything on the packaging of the box or book or blu-ray that said there was an Atmos mix. Anyways, there is. In other news, I now have a disc player that can handle Atmos. I have a backlog to get through. #atmos #rollingstones

The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main Street (Rolling Stones Records COC 2-2900, 1972)
This is the greatest rock and roll album of all time. And you might not realize that if you’ve only heard it via streaming or cd. Having it split up into four chunks helps for sure but I’ve listened to a lot of versions and nothing sounds as good as my Artisan pressing. This is the real deal.
-
Jamming with Edward (Rolling Stones Records COC-39100, 1972)
I file this under Rolling Stones, but it’s just Mick, Bill and Charlie with Nicky Hopkins and Ry Cooder. It’s a mess but it’s as good as a lot of boots of Exile outtakes I’ve heard. Recorded in 1969 when these guys could do no wrong, they attempt to challenge that idea.

The Rolling Stones - Big Hits. High Tide and Green Grass
Back in The Day™, for some bands, singles were singles and albums were albums, and ne'er the twain would meet. Greatest Hits albums comprised songs that had been released as singles, but did not appear on regular studio albums.
This is one such, containing songs such as Paint It Black and (Can't Get No) Satisfaction. -

#knebworth #lynrydskynryd #rollingstones #classicrock #rockmusic #music #musicsky #musiciansky August 21, 1976 ~ Lynyrd Skynyrd opens for the Rolling Stones and for many, they steal the damn show. The Stones had only one rule ... don't go out on "the tongue." You can see they don't want to go, but Ronnie literally drags Stevie Gaines, Allen Collins and Gary Rossington out there during "Free Bird. Dig it.

Album Recommendations – August 2026
I’ve given up on trying to regularly write reviews of new albums, but I still want to share albums I enjoyed. Below are several new (and new-ish) albums – no ratings, no criticism – just music I enjoy listening to and hope you will too
.

Kieran Hebden, the English electronic musician who typically releases music under the name Four Tet, has opted to make his latest release nearly impossible to find on streaming services. Set aside that the artist, album, and track listing are all written in unpronounceable “wingdings,” this is an engaging mix of spiritual and danceable tracks.
Album: Foreign Tongues
Artist: Rolling Stones
Genre: Blues Rock
Release Date: July 10, 2026
Label:Polydor | Capitol
Favorite Tracks:- Rough and Twisted
- Ringing Hollow
- Never Wanna Lose You
- Beautiful Delilah
It seems inexplicable that the Rolling Stones are still releasing new music in the 2020s much less some of their best music since the 1970s. The Blues Rock extravaganza features guest appearances from Steve Winwood, Robert Smith (of The Cure), Bruno Mars, and Paul McCartney, as well as some of the final contributions of the late drummer Charlie Watts.
Album: Florida Water Blues
Artist: Twisted Teens
Genre: Garage Rock
Release Date: July 10, 2026
Label: Going Underground Records
Favorite Tracks:- Why Did You Miss It?
- Swamp
- Florida Water Blues
- Weather the Season
Twisted Teens are back with their second album of folk-and-country inflected, swampy, garage rock. See my March post for their previous release.
Album: Emotional Junglist
Artist: Nia Archives
Genre: Jungle, R&B, Indie Rock
Release Date: July 17, 2026
Label: Hijinxx | Island
Favorite Tracks:- Feelingz Go Numb
- Danger
- Get Me Down
- Superlust
- Boys in Blue
English DJ/producer/singer/songwriter Nia Archives is a self-described junglist, but this album doesn’t fit one genre. The tracks explore R&B, Indie Rock, and Dream Pop to the extent that I sometimes forget that it’s the same artist.
Album: América!
Artist: Orquesta Akokán
Genre: Latin Jazz
Release Date: July 17, 2026
Label: Daptone Records
Favorite Tracks:- No Me Voy
- Hace Tiempo
- Girassol
This Cuban-American ensemble keeps alive the mambo traditions of the mid 20th century. The energy of their performance is captured in this live in the studio recording.

This is for Jan 30, 2026, #KidThe Who, “The Kids Are Alright” soundtrack, 1979
I encountered this film at the height of my Who mania, and it was EVERYTHING to me. It has grainy black-and-white footage of early gigs, TV appearances including the moment on the Smothers Brothers when Keith destroyed Pete’s hearing with explosives (not a metaphor), performances at The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus and at Woodstock, the video for “Success Story,” an outstanding deep cut of John’s (with the studio recording from “Who By Numbers," not included on the soundtrack album), their last appearance with Keith at Shephardson Studios, staged expressly for the film, and more. What it didn't have is the song “The Kids Are Alright.” (Seems they’ve added it onto the later DVD and Blu-ray releases behind additional closing credits, but I liked their little joke better.)
One of the best segments of the film/selections on the album, and itself somewhat in keeping with the “kid” theme, is their performance of Mose Allison’s “Young Man’s Blues.” The attitude of the original was already pure punk; in The Who’s hands, this jazz/blues piano piece becomes muscular, even menacing.
They fucking kill it.
