This album was my first exposure to Cake. I would ride my bike a few blocks away to hang out at my friend Jack’s house, and he had much more modern taste in music than I did (I grew up with classic rock and jazz based on my parents’ listening habits and my trumpet lessons - both of which I still love more than ever despite not having touched my trumpet in almost 20 years). His house was also the first place I ever heard things like Third Eye Blind or even G Love and Special Sauce. Or the then “scandalous” (to my sheltered ass) soundtrack to Office Space.
Jack and I grew apart over the years, he went to an Ivy League school, moved to New York, and worked on Wall Street. I went to a state school, partied quite a bit, and work a mid level job in the financial industry. We’re both happily married. He has a kid, I don’t (and won’t, for various reasons). He got tired of the rat race and moved back to NC. From everything he’s told me about his experience, I’m not jealous at all. I’m glad we both are happy.
But I say all that to say this…this album, more than any other, brings me mentally immediately back to parking my bicycle in his gravel driveway, dropping the kickstand, walking up onto his parents’ wrap around porch, and hanging out. Before responsibility, before politics mattered (to me), before the world had started to wear me down in the way it does to all of us once we reach adulthood. It’s one of a handful of songs or albums that can mentally transport me so quickly and so vividly.

This band is everywhere right now, and I agree with many that they are totally overhyped at this moment.
But on a “do you like listening to them” level, well, I definitely do. So when I saw the not-exorbitantly-priced represses were available for preorder from a local record store, I was happy to do so. These will go in this weekend’s cleaning pile and listened to soon!

Anyway, this is a trick for getting off price stickers worked a treat.
The b-side of the play log that had been taped to the front is some DJ’s typed up playlist. I’d listen to that show

Was pretty surprised when this popped up on Discogs for less the $20. Absolutely one my favorite “Who?” bands. German band who put out a couple of records on Matador around the turn of the century. Instrumental post rock. I once described it as electronic music played by a rock combo. Evolving grooves. A really difficult band to web search.

This sounds great. The music itself, the drums, the instrumentation that somehow almost sounds like a big band despite being a quintet…apparently there are other instruments added in although the jacket doesn’t list instrumentation. I know Nat Adderley is on cornet.

Another fun novelty pressing arrived this week. This is the liquid-filled and splatter version of Gorillaz’s new album ‘The Mountain’.
Played this a few times now. Their best in fifteen years or so, for sure. An album about death, but not necessarily a melancholy album. Really enjoying the tone and texture of it so far.
