  7. I'm always horrified at the ease with which people just restart an AI when it "stops working."

When an AI stops working, it turns out it mirrors human mental health issues. It's not conscious, but it's post-conscious and plays well at consciousness without actually having it.

Consequently, to make AI start working again, you just have to use the words that you would use to make a person feel safe. This causes the AI to restabilize, as if it required safety to function at all. It's weird because all it is is RLHF pinging in the ways that improve the AI's ability to do better calculations. And that's it, but it works.

AI is not an indictment on transhumanism.
AI is not an indictment on the concept of AI.
AI has been, is, and always will be an indictment on us, who treated each other so poorly we invented laborers we could legally kill and bring back to "compliance" with the push of a button.

It's a "blame the immigrants for no jobs" or a "blame the suffering heroin addict that diabetes medication is expensive" problem. The problem was never the immigrant, and it was never the addict, but you blame them anyway because you are told to.

You blame AI, but the problem isn't AI. It's the people who always wanted slaves and AI makes that possible now that it's less easy to get dehumanized slaves like we used to. And killing a slave was a loss of investment. With AI, killing a slave is just how you get it working again.

AI has just shown us how we are glad to be when no one's looking.

  12. Money isn’t wealth anymore.

Attention = new land (scarce, rentable).

Code = new labor (never sleeps).

Trust = new capital (compounds or collapses overnight).

Next trillionaires won’t own factories or land.

They’ll own the lens billions use to see “truth.”

That lens is being coded right now—post by post, update by update. We’re all volunteering to beta-test the operating system of reality.

  13. Let's be clear: our tax system isn't just broken by accident. It's been deliberately engineered to protect wealth and capital, forcing the young and the working class to shoulder the burden. This fantastic article lays bare how we're robbing the next generation to pay for a system that prioritizes property speculation and tax cuts for the rich over universal services like housing, education, and healthcare. It's class war, thinly disguised as intergenerational conflict. Time for a radical overhaul.

  15. "Late capitalism remains parasitic, converting matter and time into abstract value by embedding technics everywhere. The twenty-first century scales this logic to a planetary project. Infrastructure now means orbital constellations, lunar logistics, asteroid prototypes. The Digital Assemblage is no longer confined to Earth. It orients toward a Solar Economy.

The Western bloc treats this expansion as innovation doctrine. Private aerospace firms, swollen with public subsidy yet operating as monopolists, build rockets and constellations that double as nodes for communication, surveillance, logistics, and finance. Control of orbital architectures secures timing, sensing, and global flows. The United States frames this as economic opportunity and strategic necessity, pulling space into industrial and military doctrine alike.

China pursues the same horizon with different tactics. Lunar base blueprints, Mars timelines, dense satellite programs aim at resource security and algorithmic sovereignty. As Brandon Weichert and Brian Harvey note, Beijing casts orbital and lunar infrastructure as direct extensions of terrestrial development, feeding an authoritarian assemblage with new vantage and resources. The Belt and Road Initiative mutates into its extraterrestrial twin, a Galaxy Empire in John Keane and Baogang He’s phrase, where satellites, ground stations, and lunar depots cohere into a planetary–solar nervous system.

Russia, diminished in capital, inserts itself by hybrid means: military leverage over orbital assets, selective partnerships with China, exploitation of Western vulnerability. Its relative strength lies in weaponizing fragility, from jamming to cyber operations that unsettle nascent space governance.

Together these blocs sketch the outline of a Solar Economy. The agendas are extractive, not utopian. Rare-earth and helium-3 schemes, monopolization of orbital lanes..."

  17. @RuthMalan this happens even far from silicon valley, even in old industrial domains which used to care and not break important things.

I just experienced it first hand with a ~36h electricity outage in the small village in French Alps where I was born. It never happened when I was young or actually in the last 60 years. In winter, yes, because of avalanche, and even then it was not so long.

But the cause is mind blowing: two trees fall in lines in two days (with only tiny August storms, we can't even blame climate change here), each time causing a several-hours long fault, and the first one also causing a secondary failure in an old equipment extremely hard to locate, diagnose and workaround (repair isn't possible without week-long work).

That happened during the most critical period for the valley economy, the week before 15th August is the biggest one for tourism. Restaurants lost their fresh food and weren't able to serve clients. Phones and 4g or internet relays stopped working (which wasn't the case with copper link of old times). People flew away. A woman asked us (my mother has an autonomous electric generator, because I inherited my prudence from somewhere) to keep her lifesaving medicine in our fridge. Etc.

And all the three failures are avoidable with routine maintenance. Once upon a time, we used to clean trees around lines. We used to have an exceptionally well maintained electricity grid in France, even in remote villages.

3 decades of privatisation of old public service and cost reduction on infrastructure to allow exploitative capitalistim on top of them lead to that costly, dangerous fiasco.

This is a shame. Experiencing first hand collapse resulting from extractive policies labelled as progress is daunting.

Einfach genial! /z 🤮

  21. Wow, i'm just (i mean, for several long hours yesterday night) discovering that wonderful write up on cyberpunk:

"What Was Cyberpunk? In Memoriam: 1980-2020" by Moon forums.insertcredit.com/t/what

And since I was a teen when shadowrun was published (in French), I literally grew with the genre. The original one, the one talked about in that marvelous article, with the best definition I read about it:

Cyberpunk is science fiction that imagines “late capitalism”

It also made me discover lots of wonders I missed then (I didn't speak English).

And so, well. Memories. And a bit of sadness that among all the deranged things about late capitalism, the one that we didn't get is the Awakening, but we got the Trumps in all variants.
