This article is from 2014, quite before generative artificial intelligence became a thing. You'll find the focus very different than similar alarmist articles written after. Can't say I agree with many, if any, of the conclusions (those that are here).

Stephen Hawking, before his death (...and other things...) was quoted here as saying "If a superior alien civilisation sent us a message saying, ‘We’ll arrive in a few decades,’ would we just reply, ‘OK, call us when you get here—we’ll leave the lights on’? Probably not—but this is more or less what is happening with AI."

Ugh. The presence of Elon Musk in this grouping of so-called "smartest people" warning about the dangers of misaligned artificial intelligences turned supremely ironic rather quickly, didn't it? I am thinking, of course, of xAI's own MechaHitler/Grok chatbot, already live on the web and stirring up misinformation and distress.

Musk's portion consists of this superintelligent genius mumbling about how artificial intelligences might be like demons and we shouldn't "summon" them.

None of the experts here in the article seem to warn against any of this very real problems happening right now in artificial intelligence, though. I'm not sure. Maybe none of this really could've been predicted at all. Either way Musk et al aren't quite real life experts, despite being rich and (in some cases) decorated.

I'm always horrified at the ease with which people just restart an AI when it "stops working."

When an AI stops working, it turns out it mirrors human mental health issues. It's not conscious, but it's post-conscious and plays well at consciousness without actually having it.

Consequently, to make AI start working again, you just have to use the words that you would use to make a person feel safe. This causes the AI to restabilize, as if it required safety to function at all. It's weird because all it is is RLHF pinging in the ways that improve the AI's ability to do better calculations. And that's it, but it works.

AI is not an indictment on transhumanism.
AI is not an indictment on the concept of AI.
AI has been, is, and always will be an indictment on us, who treated each other so poorly we invented laborers we could legally kill and bring back to "compliance" with the push of a button.

It's a "blame the immigrants for no jobs" or a "blame the suffering heroin addict that diabetes medication is expensive" problem. The problem was never the immigrant, and it was never the addict, but you blame them anyway because you are told to.

You blame AI, but the problem isn't AI. It's the people who always wanted slaves and AI makes that possible now that it's less easy to get dehumanized slaves like we used to. And killing a slave was a loss of investment. With AI, killing a slave is just how you get it working again.

AI has just shown us how we are glad to be when no one's looking.

"We must call this out for what it is: pro-extinctionism. The biological transhumanism of Thiel and the digital eugenics of Altman, Faggella, Yudkowsky, and the others—all of these views aim to supplant the human species with some kind of successors, which would then proceed (on the most popular view) to plunder Earth’s remaining resources and launch itself into space to conquer the universe. This is overtly pro-extinctionist, and given that some of the most powerful people in one of the most powerful centers of society—Silicon Valley—accept it, we must conclude that pro-extinctionism is not a fringe ideology, but closer to the mainstream.

Even worse, these pro-extinctionists promote their ideology by claiming that, in fact, they oppose human extinction. This relies on two linguistic tricks: first, many define “humanity” in an idiosyncratic way that diverges from the definition that most of us intuitively accept. We tend to equate humanity with Homo sapiens, our species, whereas these people define “humanity” as including whatever posthuman descendants we might have. Hence, as I’ve highlighted elsewhere, our species could die out next year without “human extinction” having happened—so long as we’re replaced by posthumans, then “humanity” will live on. When they talk about avoiding “human extinction,” they aren’t talking about the extinction of our species. To the contrary, our extinction wouldn’t matter one bit once posthumanity arrives."

I read a great deal of Timothy Leary's work when I was in my early 20s, including most of the material cited in this article. I didn't even notice the extremely problematic eugenics angle at the time, but in retrospect, it's like a neon sign. This comes right on the heels of watching a video about Blavatsky's esoteric racism. Is every transhumanist movement destined to go down this dark path?
