  1. 🚀️ Pontoon Debian v2026.03.20 released

I just released a new version of Pontoon Debian, a manual to install and maintain Pontoon (#Mozilla web-based translation software) on #Debian and #Ubuntu.

Please note that this may be one of the last updates for this project. If you are using it, please let me know and consider contributing. 🙂️

  2. L’année dernière, @MoritzBrouhaha nous a raconté l’histoire du standard informatique Unicode, utilisé par tout le monde à travers le globe dans nos communications quotidiennes. Visionnez ou revisionnez sa conférence en ligne.

  3. Dear Americans, in french we put a space before double punctuation. So please stop showing me an emoji panel each time I type " :".

It adds a random emoji and I have to type escape each time.

  6. Hello fediverse!
I guess a short #introduction is due: I am an architect and academic trying to avoid other social media and eager to see the fediverse grow. I wish all universities would have their own instances but they don't (yet), so thanks a lot to the @FediverseFoundation for hosting me.
    I teach #architecture , #construction and #BuildingMaterials but I am also engaged in #UniversityManagement and #internationalisation .
I will probably post about all this and many other random topics in both English and German, sometimes Spanish, eventually Italian. You can filter languages in your preferences in case you don't want a Babel in your timeline.
Give me some time to get started and see you out there in the 'verse!

  7. [screenreader users, the following contains a lot of non-alphabet characters]

Fix/Workaround for me - still interested in info:
SendEnv LANG LC_* in my *local* .ssh/config

ls output is now 'Árstíðir - Hvel' etc etc

    Update:
I am going to point towards #tmux and #WindowsTerminal here too, I can paste "Árstíðir - Hvel - 12 Unfold.flac" but touching a file with UTF-8 characters causes the same issues.

#PuTTY displays it correctly! The only difference I can see is that LANG="en_AU.UTF-8" is exported.

    #Linux friends, what do I do with a filename like "''$'\303\201''rst'$'\303\255\303\260''ir - Hvel - 12 Unfold.flac'"? (arstidirsom.bandcamp.com/album if you're wondering)

The correct, or original filename from the zip file is "Árstíðir - Hvel - 12 Unfold.flac"

    If I set LANG to something with UTF-8, I get _rst__ir - Hvel - 12 Unfold.flac, but ls *12\ Unfold.flac does not find it.

What's the equivalent of hexdump for filenames? This particular example is on ZFS but I have seen the same on ext4 and btrfs so I am sure it's not (entirely) filesystem specific.

If you search for this answer, what keywords did you use? I am having trouble here.

  11. So apparently server administrators on the #Fediverse won’t be able to name custom emoji in their native languages and expect them to work in Mastodon, because according to @Gargron non-ASCII signs are hard to input and diacritics shouldn’t change the meaning of words:

    https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/28572#issuecomment-1878952504

No, in my view emoji identifiers shouldn’t be ‘straightforward to input for everyone’. Custom emoji are local to a server; they should be straightforward to input for the users of that server. People from other servers don’t ever have to type their names (unless their administrators choose to add them to their own server), so their ability to type them is completely irrelevant.

Why should a server made specifically for people speaking Russian or Japanese have to use ASCII for their emoji identifiers? Their users have no trouble typing Cyrillic or Kanji signs; it’s what they already do when they make a post; it’s how they normally talk. Why force them to use a different language/alphabet when typing emoji identifiers?

Moreover, linking the username issue makes no sense whatsoever. Usernames are typed across servers and it makes sense to impose stricter technical limitations so more people can read, write and recognise them. This is not the case for emoji; you rarely ever need to type other servers’ emoji identifiers. Normally you don’t even get to see them; you only get to see the picture they represent! Assuming server admins do their job responsibly, there is zero added confusion for anyone involved.

I understand that Unicode is complex, language support is challenging and compromises might be necessary at times. But can we please accept the existence of different languages and writing systems as a reality that we should try to accommodate for, rather than change or circumvent? Yes, a and á are different signs. Yes, they might radically change the meaning of a word. That’s not a proposition for us to accept or reject; that’s the reality of our multilingual world, and should be the basis of our discussion.

  13. 👀 Does WCAG apply only to English (or the like), or does it aim to cover all languages?

  14. In May we held a US memorial service for my mother, who died earlier this year. Multiple speakers remembered Amerikannada, and specifically plaintively wished my parents could have used the tools available now, the tools that make indie publishing, in Kannada, so much more feasible without staggering work.

So here's a shout-out to toolmakers, especially the #localization and #internationalisation #i18n #l10n folks who provide that capability to my parents' intellectual heirs. Thank you.

Well, well, I wonder what has prompted this sudden avowel:

"We’ve balanced the books by hugely increasing numbers of international students, by, in many institutions, not investing in adequate repairs and maintenance and, as a system, systematically underpaying our staff"
