The clip path idea fell down when I started thinking about the text that is part of the image I want to create.
Centering that text attractively within the image will be difficult, given that a #monospace #font could mean different things in different contexts, even on the same machine, and that's when you disregard what fonts the user may have installed above and beyond the defaults.
Computing a bounding box is the obvious choice for centering something within something else. When the meaning of "monospace" may change based on what fonts one has installed, that makes it even more difficult.
This seem fine if I'm doing this in a web browser or some other #SVG viewer where #javascript is available. But I'm shooting for a fully-precomputed #static image that looks the same everywhere, and that I can possibly slice and dice later without a web browser in the tool chain. (For example, custom #emoji in your corporate #chat.)
So what I think I'm really trying to say is...
