I need help (first-world problem)! I want a robot lawn mower. I’ve read articles. They aren’t clear about one thing:
Does every robot lawn mower require a network connection to the company’s servers?
I would prefer to buy one that can’t be #Enshittified if the company goes under or just decides to “stop supporting” the equipment. Otherwise I’m just renting the equipment at their pleasure.

I've been seeing a lot of videos and blog posts about the resurgence of #piracy in response to #enshittification . A common note is that its a _service_ problem, not a _product_ problem which is correct.
A company that has known this from the get-go and has never #enshittified is #Beatport - they're like iTunes but specifically for #EDM (sorry #bonkwave #genrepolice) I bought my first #DRM -free #mp3 tracks from Beatport in 2004 and (with some exceptions) I can _still download them today_.

#Firefox is officially #enshittified.
It turned on the horrid "sponsored shortcuts" and "sponsored stories" without me asking.
Those stories are the last dadgum thing I ever want to see. I don't want more news about USFASH.
Smeg #Mozilla. I hope Google bumps them off the money-nipple and they crash and burn.
I'm going to try #WaterFox and #LibreWolf again.

The once-great #LABS virtual instrument has been fully #enshittified, having been rolled up into some platform abomination called Splice.
LABS was fairly easy - ok, extremely hard for most - to run under #linux, but it was possible. Splice will not.

@Kerplunk @Ninji granted, #ThinkPads get #enshittified too.
The latest generation #Trackpoint is so shallow that it's physically painful to use, making it pointless.
i have not found it painful, but badly done for sure.
Lenovo has also shown a new model without the feature, not sure how that will go down with business users.
Personally I am not in the market for a new Thinkpad, still plenty of good second hand options available.

the house has a “smart” (🙄) TV – so far I’ve removed 3 previous still-logged-in Google account profiles, disabled analytics & “data sharing” in three different places, turned off all the Google / Alexa integration bullshit (especially the microphone wake word!), etc., etc. 😩
but at least one profile is still “remembered” somewhere in the settings, since if you open the “set up Google assistant” page (to make sure everything’s turned off), it “helpfully” pre-fills the account box with the email of one of the (obviously-not-really-)deleted accounts
(I’ll probably email that person & let them know that I’ve logged out of their account for them & suggest that maybe they should do that themselves next time they log in to their account on some rando’s TV… 🤪)
and of course, despite us def never logging in to any apps on some rando’s TV & only running stuff on our own laptops connected via HDMI, we still run the risk of the TV snitching on us via totally undisclosed & un-opt-outable #AutomatedContentRecognition (#ACR) tech – this particular TV is a #TCL one, one of the brands named in a new #lawsuit in… ✷checks notes✷ …#Texas (😳 but also 🎉)

First post!
I like practical nerdy stuff, like #3dPrints, #HomeAssistant (whether this is practical is arguable, and I am willing to have that debate), #Linux and other such #ActuallyUsefulSoftware. Against #enshittification and #enshittified software, pretty anti big tech.
Which is ironic because I work in a Windows environment for my current day job and am working on my AWS certifications when I'm not at work.
I am married to my lovely wife - we got married in May of this year. She is not on the fedi, at least currently.
We are #CatPeople more than dog people, but I love all the critters who wander this earth with us. -

I've been using Mojeek a bit more but their index isn't large enough yet. With #DuckDuckGo being #enshittified, I just randomly decided to see if some ancient search engines are still alive. Sure enough, there are a few throwback engines still going strong.
#Lycos: Alive and well! I don't see much enshittification, it's clean.

So #czc (Czech Computer) e-shop was bought out by Allegro conglomerate some time ago. And their perfectly usable e-shop at czc.cz got #enshittified to the point where I am *certain* I will not buy anything from them ever again. I can't *FIND* anything I need. The cookie popups are relentless. Spam detection blocks me (possibly because of ad/tracker blockers?).
It's mind-boggling. I'll switch to supporting some other smaller Czech tech stores I suppose (www.tsbohemia.cz/ or ?)

The only one I know of that you can pay to use is #Kagi, but that is an #AI company from the very beginning.
I've been having good luck with #DuckDuckGo for a few years now, and ever since Google #enshittified/nerfed their search results, I no longer fall back to google for hard searches.
@Mojeek is absolutely worth a try, and my good friend @amin created #clew (https://clew.se) which is an open-culture-and-fediverse-first search engine that's definitely worth trying!!
