On March 16th, 2026, Canada permanently shut down Weatheradio Canada. 186 transmitter sites. 50 years of service. Gone overnight. Their replacement? A smartphone app.
But here’s the hard truth that no government app can fix.
When a tornado touches down in rural Manitoba — cell towers fail. When floodwaters sweep through Saskatchewan — power grids collapse. When wildfires cut off northern communities — the internet disappears. And in that exact moment of crisis, the WeatherCAN app becomes a useless black screen.
This is precisely where amateur radio operators step in.
Canadian hams are already organizing severe weather watching networks using IRLP — linking repeaters and stations across entire provinces to relay real-time storm information when every commercial system goes dark. No towers needed. No internet required. No subscription. No outage.
Just trained operators, reliable equipment, and an unwavering commitment to keeping communities informed and alive.
Radio Amateurs of Canada called this closure a serious public safety concern. We agree. Because history proves it every single time — hurricanes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes — ham radio operators are ALWAYS the last ones standing when infrastructure collapses.
