On March 16th, 2026, Canada permanently shut down Weatheradio Canada. 186 transmitter sites. 50 years of service. Gone overnight. Their replacement? A smartphone app.

Canadian hams are already organizing severe weather watching networks using IRLP β linking repeaters and stations across entire provinces to relay real-time storm information when every commercial system goes dark. No towers needed. No internet required. No subscription. No outage.
Just trained operators, reliable equipment, and an unwavering commitment to keeping communities informed and alive.
Radio Amateurs of Canada called this closure a serious public safety concern. We agree. Because history proves it every single time β hurricanes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes β ham radio operators are ALWAYS the last ones standing when infrastructure collapses.
