Understanding Pi-Star as a Digital Voice Gateway
A practical overview of Pi-Star: what a node is, how a hotspot bridges an RF radio to digital voice networks, and where modes such as YSF, DMR, D-Star, NXDN, P25, and cross-mode links fit.https://fallbackengineering.com/2026/07/14/understanding-pi-star-digital-voice-gateway/

After about 30 years of having my #hamradio license, and about 10 years since I got motivated enough to start buying radios again, I finally have got a #dmr radio and hotspot, and am listening to people calling CQ on a worldwide calling channel.
It's so great hearing people from all over the world reaching out to each other and starting a conversation.

Wow .. the reason for this annual validation process is a doozie.
With a global population of 8 billion people and 308665 DMR IDs issued, they're running out of ID numbers in less time than I've been licensed.
Perhaps it's time to reconsider the design of this apparently too popular technology?

I'm currently building a macOS CPS for OpenGD77, soon there will be an early preview and I would be happy if someone would be willing to test it out.
The problem it's solving is to provide an excellent UX when editing OpenGD77 codeplugs so you can spend time on air instead of your CPS.

DM me if you're interested.

- The MMDVM-Multi program written as per above, using #libliquid and #SoapySDR. It can be used with the #PlutoSDR, #LimeSDR family, Ettus #USRP bus devices, and hopefully soon also the #SXceiver which has become very popular recently with hams due to the MidnightBlueLabs TETRA stack- The release of MMDVM-IQ by G4KLX means that a new, completely distributed #DMR #trunking stack is possible, using only UDP messaging protocols instead of various hacks on top of UDP, ZeroMQ and virtual PTY

It's been a very busy few months for me, here are some progress updates that may be relevant to some people:- #DMR #trunking code in #MMDVM, MMDVMHost has been almost entirely upstreamed, this means I can stop maintaining my forks now
- DMRGateway code for the Homebrew DMR Trunking Protocol has also been upstreamed but it's waiting for more people to test it
- Added support for the LimeSDR-mini, LimeNET-micro and Ettus USRP to the newly released MMDVM-IQ

The TGIF DMR network appears to be completely offline and passing no traffic, though their web site is up and all indicators there are green.
EDIT: TGIF is back online.
There is a TGIF Discord server where several people are reporting this. No official word as of yet.
Dozens of people were online at the time of the abrupt disconnect, based on the last heard page which is online.

Successful QSO on the East Coast Reflector with Bob #AJ9Y in Phoenix. I'm using VoxDMR with my phone on the TGIF network. Reception report: the audio was "raspy" and hard to copy.
I am always surprised when a sprawling multiprotocol network works as well as it does, and also not surprised when DMR audio gives a subpar reception report.

@scott indeed I will! I’m the drum major in front of the combined band. And don’t sleep on the concert we’re doing in Burlington on the 18th!! (And I’m bringing my #dmr rig too so I’ll be on the air from my hotel room :)) #amateurradio #hamradio

Having a problem getting my Hytera CPS software working properly. Installed the correct USB drivers but when trying to connect the radios to the computer *cough cough* Windoze tells me "bkrwbl.sys does not pass the Windows driver policy". What should I do? #hytera #cps #hamradio #radio #drivers #DMR

In other news, I got my MMDVM hotspot up and running (finally), and soon will be hitting more than just my regular #dmr offerings from the local repeaters! #amateurradio #hamradio

Brandmeister & their policies are openly hostile against the spirit of ham radio. The people who run that network are a bunch of jerks. Many of them are also incredibly toxic & also homophobic/transphobic. For my concern, they all can go fuck themselves.

The preferential call (priority call) functionality needs to be enabled in the #trunking controller for this to work (screenshot of option attached).
I don't keep it enabled on my repeater usually because it's annoying (the announcement replaces one voice frame in the payload channel).
But I hope someone might find this useful.
As a reminder, the whole trunking base station stack is open source, so anything can be implemented (within reason).
-
Demo of preferential calls in the #DMR #trunking system (Hytera calls these priority group).
Start: both radios subscribed to the parrot TG, Parrot is medium prio in the call priorities on radio 1.
I request TG 91 via DGNA on radio 1 (I have to do this is because it's not programmed in the same scan list as parrot on my radio).
TG 91 becomes active and I listen it. Then I initiate a call to Parrot on radio 2, and radio 1 now switches to this preferential call.

Three days later, I’m up for air with a codeplug that seems to work for the DB25-D. Still shaking out a few bugs, and not without a little bit of cursing, some coffee, and a lot of patience. #dmr stands to be a bunch of fun, I think! #amateurradio #hamradio

Getting my new #dmr radio up and working tonight. Got me a Radioddity DB25-D, and let me tell you, friends, getting this thing running has been a PROCESS. CPS was definitely written as an afterthought. None of my local groups support the codeplugs for this radio, so I’m starting from scratch. Got the fancy replacement Codeplug Editor from MM7DBT, and it’s currently gargling the 15MB CSV file of contacts, then I’ll need to get the groups together. FUN!!! #amateurradio #hamradio

@samirparikh
Thanks. It relies on existing building blocks though, like #MMDVM , #GNURadio and the #DMR trunking controller (DMRTC) which has been in development for more than two years.
