Our city's independent bookstore needs your help!

My local anticapitalist, antifascist, LGBTQIA+ friendly, anarchist, super ultra crunchy, cooperatively owned, and self described "radical bookstore" is falling on tough times.

Hurricane Helene was a doozy y'all, a ton of small businesses like this are closing with no plans on reopening. The FEMA payments meant to help Asheville and WNC are being bogged down in a bunch of red tape, so many of us haven't seen a dime of them yet, even though some of it is earmarked to help small business. And, although tourism is coming back (and we're very very open for business!) the shock to the system was just too big for a lot of folks.

I've seen long-standing cornerstorne-of-the-neighborhood places just like this wink out of existence without any warning, only to be replaced by exploitative, soul-sucking corporate owned chains run by people who don't even live or pay their taxes in our community. I don't want to keep seeing this happen to the town I grew up in.

These are good people who provide an essential service to our city: being some of the loudest, most outspoken defenders of our human rights, and providing civic minded reading material you won't find anywhere else.

They sell books other people don't want you to read, and that generally means those are books you're obligated to read.

Also, they once hosted the backroom of their bookstore out as a viewing space for a no-budget student film I helped make like a decade ago and they were real cool about it so-long-as everyone we invited to the screening bought a coffee or a book. Do you think Barnes & Nobel would do that? Would Amazon?

Check 'em out! Buy a banned book! Become a sustaining member of one of the best independent bookstores around!

  2. I remember after #Helene how many #Canadian crews came to our area of Western North Carolina, to help with debris removal, and to get our power back on, and our water running again.

Why would any of them come here now?

Some of the worst that this regime has done is destroy relationships and friendships that have endured for a years.

I'm so sorry, Canada. We miss you.

  3. Went down to wander around the RAD again today in #Asheville (River Arts District.) One building in this section has reopened, as a sort of mega-art space, with a hundred small areas for people to show their wares. Always nice to see progress.

This building shares the parking lot.

  4. Good Friday morning to all, from the #Asheville area! A nice walk/hike at the #NCArboretum is now in the books, and coffee is being gratefully consumed.

It opens at 8 so not an early start, but about 32 to begin and 41 now, so good hiking temps.

I'm a slow-poke, but it's a nice big loop, basically on what look like fire roads, so less uneven terrain. Seeing some more areas of #Helene damage for the first time, but the Arboretum has done so much work and restoration.

Always a nice place to be outside! And for once not a single car was parked at the BRP interface with the MST.

  5. Another wander around the RAD in #Asheville this week, brought us to the RiverLink building and its upstairs gallery.

The height of the 2 worst floods was stenciled on the brick of the entrance, which is mind-blowing, when one sees how far away and far above the river this building actually is. Inside, they had 2 photos at the worst of the flooding September 2024 during #Helene. #Flood

  6. @FotoVorschlag 'Bäume' #FotoVorschlag Trees

Not excellent photos, but these 2 from 2023 show the French Broad River Park more than a year before #Helene scrubbed every single tree from this place. It is now an open space of weeds and dirt, more than a year after the storm. #Asheville

  7. I had completely missed the fact that #ThisOldHouse has their new season rebuilding here in #Asheville after #Helene, which is pretty amazing. So glad they did this. (And thanks to @avlcharlie for pointing it out.)

Link is to Ep 1, but others are available, too.

  8. Did ya'll know This Old House did an Asheville #Helene series??

I stumbled on this and the intro flood and devastation scenes nearly made me cry..
