  1. Harvested daylily foliage. Drying them underneath our deck. I'm going to be using them to make natural cordage, in Autumn & Winter months. I'll be harvesting more foliage, for natural cordage & weaving practice 💚✌️

  2. A friend sent me a link to this video after we discussed making cordage over dinner the other day. (What else would one talk about while having dinner?!)

Traditional #Hemp #RopeMaking: Ancient Fiber Craftsmanship

""Twisting history into strength—witness the transformation of raw fibers into durable cords through timeless techniques."

"This process showcases traditional rope making methods still practiced by master craftsmen:

    - Fiber Preparation - Retting and beating hemp stalks
    - Hand Spinning - Creating yarn with thigh-rolling technique
    - Strand Twisting - Three-ply reverse winding
    - Laying Operation - Using a walking wheel
    - Finishing - Beeswax coating for weatherproofing

    Material Specifications:
✔ Fiber Type: Cannabis sativa hemp
    ✔ Stalk Length: 2-3 meters
    ✔ Yarn Diameter: 3-5mm
    ✔ Rope Diameter: 12-15mm
    ✔ Tensile Strength: 500kg

    Tool Inventory:
    - Hand carders
    - Spinning hooks
    - Wooden tension frame
    - Pitch-coated gloves
    - Hemp brake tool

    Key Process Metrics:
    ▶ Fiber soaking: 7-10 days
    ▶ Daily output: 15 meters
▶ Twist rate: 8 turns per foot
▶ Drying time: 3 sunny days
    ▶ Shelf life: 20+ years

    Structural Advantages:
    - Natural mold resistance
    - UV degradation protection
    - Progressive failure warning

  3. Turning invasive nut sedges into fibers for #weaving and #cordage mostly because my mower is broken and I can't mow them down. 😭 Lemons=Lemonade or whatever. The #fiber is lovely and strong, ngl.

  4. Dabbling in #cordage
Commonly used cordyline (ti leaf) and trying out some false cardamom leaves. False cardamom is in the ginger family. I have lots of different kinds of ginger, so if this dries nicely and is strong enough for crafts or even gentle use, it will be great! #crafting #plants #fiber #feral #today #primitiveskills #weaving

  5. Here's a couple of weeks of idle hand-twisted cordage. Two-ply twist using Aotearoa New Zealand flax¹.

    Axe for scale.

  6. One project partially completed. The handles and ribs are wisteria; the cordage is a mixture of day lily, gladiolus, and yellow flag iris leaves. The yarn is some wool/alpaca blend that I spun and dyed with sandalwood.

  7. Day 5 and May.

Tried my hand at making cordage out of stinging nettles. Worked quite well and had enough to make a band for my hat.

Also started making squares for yet another blanket. I always start with the intention of it being a super king sized one, but it quickly shrinks to double, then single, then small lap blanket!

  8. Getting in just under the line (in my time zone) for #ArtJanuaryCalendar, day 1 (Happy New Year!)

These are some samples of cordage made from foraged plant materials. Honestly I forget what plants they are — I think the left and upper right might be dandelion stems, and the lower right might be Lomandra (a common Australian native grass that’s endemic to our region.)
