Hmm I'm on a train back from Ballarat to Melbourne, and we stopped a while at Rockbank due to a "train fault". From talking to the conductor, sounds like the hose which drops sand on the track came unstuck. We're moving now, anyway, at cautious speed. Fingers crossed!

We arrived by bus from Creswick at Ballarat station this morning, intending to take the 10.44 train to Melbourne. Where we found a crowded platform and learned that:

1. The preceding train scheduled for 10.04 had been cancelled;
2. The 10.44 train would likely be only three carriages;
3. There would be replacement buses for part of the journey, for the whole mess had been caused by a collision between car and train which was yet to be cleared.

I instantly dubbed the 10.44 service the Train From Hell, and we stepped over the road to the genteel Provincial Hotel to have a drink while waiting 40 minutes for the next train, the 11.24 to Melbourne with a promised six carriages.

By that time it was all fixed, and we had a very pleasant journey back to the metropolis. I've never minded hanging around for a later train if it means avoiding a rail travel clusterf*ck like that.

Charlie Manson ran out of gas right here after the family torched an earthmover owned by Death Valley National Monument. It was a long walk to Barker Ranch and he was grumpy. To make matters worse, Tex Watson had made off with the other Power Wagon trying to get to Texas. Charlie was not happy.
