It is finally time for me to start indoor seeds.
The work done this winter with the #compostathome bins and worm bins let me make some free potting mix.
-
This is a good time of the year to start amending #nodig #garden beds with #compost.
This preparation work will allow your beds to be ready for spring summer and fall.
It is also a good time to start #composting.
Here is a simple #CompostAtHome bin setup. https://mastodon.social/@nicole2g/109378112801272206

This week I will start a new #CompostAtHome bin to have enough #compost for mulching #garden beds.
So #today I will harvest some browns and greens. Making wood chips as well is on the to-do list.
-
Last January 1st I started this #CompostAtHome bin https://mastodon.social/@nicole2g/109614334432851292
The results of this bin for the month of December and January gave me 20 gallons of #compost.
I will keep half of it to feed my worms and start some new bins. The other half will be used to make no-dig garden beds.

Add #carbon to a #CompostAtHome bin
Wood chips, sawdust, #cardboard, #newspaper or paper, dried leaves, #straw or hay, pine needles, nutshell, and last but not least #compost.
The more it is chopped the fastest the #fungi in your bin will process it.

#CompostAtHome tip
If you have to #transplant your #seedlings make a bucket of aerated #compost tea. Soak the #seedling in the #compostTea for 30 seconds to get the biological activity in the #soil block.
The big pro of doing this is that you won't have to water after the transplant and it will give enough nutrients for the plant to grow and avoid any shock.

#Compost is a way to sequester #carbon
in the soil.Because the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is higher in carbon, the final product is full of it.
Compost is a solution to fix the #climatechange and action that you can do #today.
Plus it helps reduce our waste and makes us more #sustainable at home.
Do your part to fix the #climatecrisis.

@Mrfunkedude you can still compost in 20-gallon bins to create enough volume for indoor plants this is how I proceed https://mastodon.social/@nicole2g/109378112801272206
The tag #CompostAtHome detail my process.
-
@cvvhrn sweet of you to share all this. You can join other compost lovers on #compostodon.
I prefer to compost in 20-gallon bins so that i can keep them safe from the weather or pests. This is how i proceed and post updates on my process on #CompostAtHome

CW: What to do if your CompostAtHome bin is too humid.
Here is a few things you can add to your #CompostAtHome bin to fix it if the level of moisture is too big.
Finished compost is a carbon material that will help balance the humidity and give your bin a good texture as compost hold the humidity.
Add more carbon material like sawdust wood chips or cardboard

To build a new habit, take the daily routine to work on something for 10 minutes or more, but entirely commit to it
It is like with #compost If you make a big pile the first days you feel happy about it, then you start to forget it, then troubles come in the pile and you feel you did not succeed
Instead, work with a small bin, and check that all is well if trouble comes you can fix them
This is how I came up with the #compostathome bins and made it work

Today i am starting a fresh new #compostathome bin. To start the 1st of each month make it easy to manage and remember.
The goal is to produce #homemade potting mix to start #seeds indoors.

Working on gathering organic matter to create a new #CompostAtHome bin for the #newyear
The goal of this bin will be to have #compost for making a potting mix to start #seeds #indoors.
Greens will be leaves of lettuce and arugula leaves of plants that were damaged by the winter storm. Browns will be wood chips, and maple tree leaves. The compost will be made of #vermicast and harvested compost at home bins.

CW: Treat for the worms
Because the #worms are such a blessing they will receive a treat for #christmas
Some of our #garden #flowers have not resist the extreme #cold so it will be time to remove them. They will be chopped finely and give a volume of green.
To balance this, I will add some pine needles that are a brown. When you chop them fine those are a real treat for the worms.

CW: Should you wear gloves when you have a compost bin.
When I first started this was not a concern. But when you refine your process to the point that you have a daily routine to check the quality of your compost. It is a fair question.
When you have a #compost bin you raise bacteria that eat the organic matter you feed them. If you happen to have those bacteria on your hands and do not clean them you will be recalled by mother nature that a hygiene procedure is better. -

It's been a month since I joined #mastodon
I aim to talk about how I make #CompostAtHome and explain how you can reduce trash and create the best homemade fertilizer. I've been practicing for the past decade on a small scale.
You can only act on what you can control; doing this will be a great blessing for your landscape.
Thank you for following, boosting, and interacting. This place has been expectionnaly less toxic than other social media. You only harvest what you plant.

CW: What is leachate in a worm bin?
Leachate is the result of the excess moisture that you can collect from a #worm bin
The main problem that you will have from it is that there is a good chance that this liquid will be anaerobic. Bad #bacteria have developed in this liquid because it has been standing for too long without oxygen.
To avoid this issue it is best to adjust the amount of water in your worm bin and have no #leachate.

@spenbroc @pawsforthought you are quite welcome, on this profile I talk about how to make #CompostAthome because it is something everyone can do especially if they are concerned for the #climate.

CW: How to protect a CompostAtHome bin from the cold?
Get your bin indoors to help your compost be active even if it is freezing outside.
Layer a good amount of paper and cardboard on the top of the bin to have this material freeze.
Tarp the bin to add an extra layer
Limit the amount of water in the bin so that it has fewer chances to freeze.
That is the big pro of having a #CompostAthome bin indoors, you don't have to worry about the cold.
-
CW: Why do you need to add compost to a #CompostAtHome bin?
Let's say that you take a leaf of lettuce and the leaf of a tree and put them next to each other. How long will it take to decompose? A lot of time
This is why you need to introduce bacteria on the leaf of lettuce or tree and allow them to eat this organic matter
The more you shred this organic matter the fastest the bacteria will eat it because they eat the edges first. It is critical to chop the waste and add #compost
-
About 50% of household trash is made of yard waste and food scraps. You can reduce this amount to 0 if you #CompostAtHome.
This is where you can do your part in the #climatecrisis and transform your landscape into a #healthy and #sustainable place.
edit: the number comes from my local county. may vary depending on your place
Point is, do not let your trash be someone else treasure

CW: Nursery bin for seedlings
This year I will try to create a bin for #seedlings.
The process is gonna be a little bit different than the traditional #CompostAtHome bin as I will use finished material to give plenty of room for the roots to thrive. Those will be filled with all the #compost created in the winter. The goal will be to protect those seedlings of late frosts. If you do not have a #greenhouse it is possible to prepare the #garden for the coming season on a small scale. -

CW: Feeding the worms
Today the #worms have been fed the content of the #CompostAtHome bin.
If you need to start a new bin you can use the harvested #worm casting to bring the biology and keep #composting even in winter.
Our indoor #plants love it and the #worms are very active and look happy.

5 things you can do for your #garden even in winter.
- a #CompostAtHome bin to have compost check the pinned post on my profile.
- harvest some browns for the #compost
- Get some indoor #plants that will need the compost.
- Organize your #seeds and think about what you will plant.
- Read #books, my all-time favorite, The market Gardener by Jean-martin Fortier.#gardenlife #gardeningistherapy #gardening #gardens #gardenersofmastadon #gardenideas #horticulture #Permaculture #RegenAg

Can I add #chicken manure to a #CompostAtHome bin?
If it is already composted in a hot pile and you made sure to kill the pathogens and harmful bacteria then yes, it is a powerful nitrogen source. But if it is fresh I would not use it because there are many risks.
Fresh chicken manure should be used first in a hot pile type Berkeley to raise its temperature. This is why I will make hot piles to use this resource.
-
Today was dried #leaves harvest.
I crush and shred those in really small pieces to use for my #CompostAtHome bins and my #worms. It is a really valuable resource that should not end at a landfill or be burned.
They are also fantastic mulch for garden beds in winter.
