Just harvested a whole bunch of #vermicompost for the first time and it was cool. Spread it throughout many plants. There are sooo many new worms in that bin, and I was able to combine two other small bins into the big one, to have a single worm bin. #worms are cool.

There was a snake in the worm compost! I guess the mice must of tunneled in from the ground so hopefully it ate some mice! I got it to move so I could dump my bucket of coffee grounds and veg scraps.

I'm considering trying vermicompost this year because our kitchen scraps serve as deer food in the compost pile.

Any tips? I'm considering just using the worms from my compost pile and not red wigglers since they are not native and can easily escape.

I'm planning to use the three-bucket method.

Just peeked into my worm bin out of curiosity. The most recent feeding, from last Saturday, was covered in a LAYER of worms. I could only just see bits of the underlying material between the worms, it looked exactly like a worm ball! I could literally HEAR them SQUIRM! 🪱🪱💕

Possibly relevant recent changes:

🪱 prefermenting all greens with lactic acid bacteria
🪱 not adding dry bedding (only damp) because I realized the bin was a bit dry
🪱 perhaps just population growth

@hannu_ikonen check out bokashi bins, I believe that'd be the most indoor friendly way of #composting - bonus points for being able to use it for citrus, onion, and garlic peel as well as coffee grounds. We placed ours under the kitchen sink, and use two rotating bins, then cycle it though a #vermicompost #wormfarm with added #charcoal to inoculate the #carbon structure with #microorganisms and make #biochar. This should be installed outside though, or at least in a garage type of space. With its small footprint, even a balcony space works well. It may take some time to get a feel for what works best for your situation, all part of the journey 🪱♻️ The quality and potency of the #wormtea and solids is amazing - your plants will 💚 it!

Barely had the #worms a week and I've already had to bring them inside due to a cold snap here in North Carolina. They're in a bathtub with a quarantining begonia rex a friend bought me. 🤣

It's so, so easy to spend all day researching the "perfect" worm care. It's not even that I want the utmost best castings out of this. It's that there are ~250 lil critters relying on me to provide at least a middling quality of life.

I'm moving across the country soon and I've got things to get rid of. The weirdest of them is the contents of my worm compost bin. Is a cubic foot of worm poop and a couple hundred worms a thing someone would want in October in New England? Probably not.

Five months in, first harvest! 🪱

✅ harvest from the bottom
✅ only the contents I wanted to take out came out (needed to scrape)
✅ just castings (and some undigested wood), no worms
✅ slightly moist but powdery and non-smelly

I'm still slightly worried whether the remaining contents will eventually settle down or whether I will have to stir the bin with a broomstick. Other than that, this self-built flow-through worm bin is living up to its promise!

Here's our #vermicompost setup. It's been running uninterrupted without any issues for over a decade now. And as they say: #happyworms #happy #soil!

Originally it lived inside our house. When we moved to a place with a large garden the worm buddies moved with us. Now they are outside in summer (in the shade of the greenhouse) and in winter they move into the #chicken coop (it's a nice place to sit on, and it's just a bit warmer there).

If I could give only one piece of advice about how to setup a worm bin.

Don't overfeed it.

Let the worms the time to consume the food and feed them about 2 times a week the volume of food they need.

Not doing this will attract unwanted visitors to your bin.

A lot of pepper #seeds have sprouted in a #worm bin, the moisture, temperature, and nutrients made those seeds germinate because I keep the worm casting shallow. The #worms love it.
