The grass smothering has begun! Hopefully I'll remember to check the area in a month or so to assess progress before recovering. At this time next year, there will either be vegetables or a mini-meadow, fingers crossed. Patience is hard, but we're in this house for the long haul, so there is time to do things the slow but effective way.

Today I cleared some beds with parsnips and other veg. @MPaola pointed out that parsnips are regarded fodder in her home country.
The pigs of my frieds were I garden ran away first. After the second bucket with parsnips they awaited me with anticipation.
After everything said before, you might have a point there, @MPaola . 😉
The best ones were transfered to the seed bed for this year's seed production for next year's sowings. There were onions and beets in the bed already. -

#Gardeners at a small scale #nodig methods are fine. They work, you should use them.
Once you start heading out into over a half acre you might want a different plan. Animal rotation, cover crop, and fallow years is what we have settled on.
For cover crops we grow white lupines from saved seed. We are testing if we can grow onions in the same field this year, so the cover crop field isn't empty.
Why White Lupine? You can eat them if you need to, they just require processing.

Jahrelang haben wir umgegraben – und damit Regenwurmgänge und Kapillaren zerstört.
Die No-Dig Methode zeigt, wie es besser geht: Boden lockern mit Sauzahn oder Grabegabel, ohne ihn zu wenden. Mulch und Kompost schützen die Oberfläche, Gründüngung lockert in der Tiefe.
Das Ergebnis: krümeliger Boden, der Wasser hält und Luft durchlässt. Nach zwei Jahren siehst du den Unterschied.

Here's the horror show at my community garden that I described several days ago. The "tilled" section has been plowed and looks weed free and inviting. But in reality the lawn of common mugwort that was previously there has just been broken up into thousands of little clumps, soon to reestablish in areas of the garden that previously didn't have it. And then, just like in past years, gardeners will abandon their plots because the weeds are too thick and the vegetables can't compete. #allotment #garden #gardening #weed #nodig #tilling #plowing #mugwort
