  2. CW: Auspol, APS cuts

@HardBeingGreen Gosh this is getting tiring. Yet again #AlboPM is showing his complete surrender to the baseless calls from the #RWNJs to cut govt spending. In doing so, the #Labor govt is showing:

    1) a complete misunderstanding of the economic landscape — which I am sure #Chalmers is well aware of but can’t/won’t front shirt his boss about,

    2) that he is prioritising his focus on the useless polls and gains #PHON has reportedly secured, mounting the barricades in defence of his office rather of the people he serves — showing he is more concerned to appease the #Rentiers and #Grifters than provide the services and support we elected him to provide.

    3) how big a hipocryte he is by his chameleon act. The left faction of the Party is utterly gutted by his betrayal.

All political donations ought to be banned outright and replaced by a fair and equitable public funding scheme (through major reforms to the AEC Act, regs and electoral legisltation in all Australian jurisdictions). Stepwise implementation is ok as far as it goes, but there needs to be an unltimate goal articulated here as well. Imo :)

Political Parties revenues ought to be restricted to membership contributions (with defined benefits) and publicly scrutinised fundraising events imo. By focusing on membership and *volunteers* political parties will need to pay more attention to the *Communities* their candidates wish to represent.

I’m opinionated on this topic, but willing to listen and change my opinion.

  9. @drrimmer
This is untenable for *any* govt. Our leaders ought to be thoroughly castigated and called out for their mismanagement of our economy when even a single famliy cannot afford to put food on the table.

Why do we elect politicians to govern in the first place? Something is deeply wrong with society when some of us go hungry due to *economic* circumstances. This is NOT a responsibilty to be left to charitable organisations, it’s a government responsibility.

  10. ## The fossil fuel playbook: How coal and gas bought time, and how to take it back

Following on from #DavidPocock’s appearance at the National Press Club where the ACT Senator spoke about lobbysts, the Klaxon has published an article by Robyn Gulliver which exposes, along with *revolving door* golden parachutes, and working both sides of politics with significant *donations* to both major parties, the extent to which Parliaments (Federal, State and Territory) are swamped with ephemeral *lobbyists* stood up as needed with each new policy and legislation which seek to regulate or tax #ExtractiveIndustries business activities (fossil fuel industries included).

Recalling Sen Pocock’s call for limiting and regulating lobbyists access to Ministers and their Staff.

    > “While political donations make headlines, daily influence happens out of sight. Integrity experts estimate about 80 per cent of federal lobbying falls outside the rules, shielded by an exemption that excludes in-house corporate lobbyists from registration requirements.

    > Multinational giants like Santos do not appear on the federal register at all.

    > State-level surges reveal how surgical this access is: our analysis showed gas lobbying registrations more than doubled in Victoria and surged five-fold in South Australia during the lead-up to proposed municipal gas bans, only to evaporate once the votes settled.

    > Transparency International scores Australia’s federal lobbying oversight system and abysmal 17 out of 100, and to date, not a single lobbyist has faced sanction despite recorded breaches.”

    As the author reminds us:
    > It would be easy to despair. But the playbook works best in the dark, and the lights are coming on.

    I certainly hope so.

  11. ## Hate To Say It, But It’s All On Us Folks

Let me be quite frank about this. While the article identifies the causes of the general anger and frustration with our politicians seemingly doing nothing to help, it does not talk about the underlying economic reasons for our current malaise.

What must be realised is that govt (politicans of all persuasions but more direclty the incumbants) have 3 factions in their ears 24/7.
    - The first is the businesses and corporations represented by lobbyists (both official and unofficial).
    - The second is the *Bureaucracy* or the various govt deparments — but the more insistants are the PMO, Treasury and Foreign Affairs.
    - The third is the *Electorate*, not so much the average punter as it is their votes.

The loudest of these is the first - thay have money to splash, the right connections, power to exert, and are soley focused on increasing profits for the #Rentiers and #Owners.

Next comes the advice that comes from govt deparments which is presumed to be unvarnished and without bias — which is a myth of course, but they sound very trustworthy and knowledgeable to our politicians (who are generally out of their depth).

And we folks, the voters, are only in the govt’s ear through their *political advisers* (with skin in the game) and only once every elections but only as far as our vote and preferences go. Politicians will do their utmost to get those from you, until they’ve got it. So we only matter for about one month every three years (save for the occasional by-election).

After that, we’re all yelling into the void folks because the first and second most important groups as far as polies are concerned are tragic #EconomicRetionalists wedded to the #NeoLiberalEconomics *trickel down effect* that has gotten us into this mess.

Until our economic systems change, or if that seems an impossible task, until our govt start to push back against the economic advice they receive and put the punters first no matter what (that is, what we elect them to do after all), not only can we look forward to **more of the same** no matter who governs, but it will also only **get worse**. So get ready for *more anger*, *more frustration*, and inevitably *more violence* until our voting selections become different. It’s on us in #2028Elections ( just as #Trump is on voting USAens).

Good luck, and good night folks.

  16. [edited for typo]

It’s #AmyRemeikis at her best. Her latest article here is a short and concise compendium of everything that is wrong in our society with the blame squarely unloaded onto our #PoliticalClass for what is, after all is said and done, just **more of the same**.

In her book *How to Argue with an Economist*, #LindyEdwards succinclty describes the problem that is the cause of all the issues we are angry about when she describes the circumstances under which our #PoliticalLeaders find themselves. On the one hand we have an #EconomicBureaucracy inculcated into the falacy that is #EconomicRationalism where #markets are the only *drivers* of our economy. And on the other hand we have all of us, the *Prols*, *Punters*, left behind to pick up the pieces, all the poorer, frustrated, angry to the point of hopelesness.

Our #Politicians sit in between those two very different camps, one camp pushing *dogmatic* beliefs that there are no alternative ways to grow and prosper. And then there is all of us that are left behind as wealth flows to the top. Currently our *Leaders* are hoodwinked by the *economists* and we barely getting a look at, just enough to keep us in line (no one wants a bloody revolution, or even any sizeable angry mod on the street — as police presence makes it plain).

Are there any answers to our dilema? There sure are. It’s all about **change**, changes in the kind of political leadership we elect to represent us, to put the *people* first, not the *markets*, in our economic system. So we cannot afford any further drift to the *right-wing* of politics folks because there lies nothing but **more of the same**.

In our reading of Amy’s article, we can pick any of the small number of short paragraphs she writes and each and everyone of these are enough to start us thinking, have a conversation, participate in a public airing of our discontent (aka political activism) and perhaps bring some clarity into what we need to do with our vote for the #2028Elections.

  17. This article by #AmyRemeikis may be old by 24hour news cycle measures, but the message stays relevant and it will stay relevant until we elect a government that is not blinded by current (and flawed) economic thinking. A govt that is brought back to its *raison d’être*, to govern a State for the benefit of the *people*, and not the *markets* (aka. Corporations and shareholders).

So it’s worth a read just to get a clear picture of what alternative we have when we come to vote in the #2028Elections. Even if we already know what those alternatives are, its worth the read to be reminded why we intent to vote the way we will in a 2028.

  18. @timhollo @HardBeingGreen

My fear is the same thing might happen here in #2028Elections . Unless there is a change in *electioneering* (aka the science of getting elected).

The greens have elected a new leader in #Shoebridge, but his electoral gameplan is still in an unequal match with trad political parties and their well funded campaigns given he has already announced his electoral platform. A costly mistake imo.

Surely the #Greens here are looking looking at the UK (just as #Labor looks at #LabourUK) for lessons. But I would suggest a better use of time would be to look at #Magyar ‘s #Hungarian campaign which started years before the election talking with the communities, down to the smallest villages, building a volunteer army, listening and shaping his campaign thoughts in accordance with what he heard along the way. The policy agenda literally fell into place with communities wishes and aspirations when the elections were announced and the results speak for themselves.

In my view, the Greens would gather support *on the ground* by listening before announcing policies. It’s the ground game that will win the day because the resulting policies (not the idealism expressed by the Green membership) will be tailored to a majority vote.

Time will tell I guess, but my emphasis on running community talks-backs everywhere (regional Australia included) is were govt is to be won or lost.
