For a really depressing account of our govt failure to curb fossil fuel extraction & exports read on:
https://australiainstitute.org.au/post/gas-in-the-northern-territory/
If it’s too much for you. Write/email your elected members to tell then how sickening their support for more pollution is and that you’ll be voting Greens at the next election. If you can’t do that, at least be informed and read the article.
Not only are you paying for it all through your energy bills, you are also giving away some of your rightful share of public funds (in terms of social services) to grifters, profiteers and the filthy rich.

The view from Grogs
https://live.australiainstitute.org.au/2025/10/parliament-live-senate-estimates-gets-underway-all-the-days-events-as-it-happens/Of course, this is the expected outcomes with every public infrastructure (Telecom sale) sold to the private sector. Falling service standards and profit taking priorities as long as profits are to be had, else the service tanks and privateers pull out without penalties.

Here is a headline (a report title to be precise) which would cause no surprise in the private sector. This sort of thing goes on all the times in our capitalist markets. But to have it label a report on the financial books of a not-for-profit PUBLIC institution is the epitome of #Corruption #Ineptitude #Mismanagement and #Buffoonery

Is there anything else required to convince everyone that the issue and the problems with ANU’s alleged financial troubles is anything but financial trouble?
Squarely, this misapprehension is a direct result of #Mismanagement and #AccrualAccounting neither of which ought to be experienced by an education institution.
Time for the #Education #Minister Jason Clare to dismiss the council outright and implement the recommended fixes that were commended to him Including scrapping the #JobReadyGraduate #Morrison crap!
“If we believe the auditor, there is no crisis at the ANU. To be clear, as a government owned, not-for-profit entity, the ANU is under no pressure to maximise its profits so that it can maximise dividends paid to shareholders. On the contrary, when the ANU made a surplus of $89.9 million in 2024 it did so by spending less money on its students, staff and community than it received.” (Source: The Australian Institute)

Why are we so afraid of acknowledging that the emperor has no clothes. Why is the world (aside from other dictatorships) pussy-foot around the #MadKing of #Merika ? It’s not like GIs will war on the rest of the world at the #Tyrant’s behest now is it?
In case you think it might, let me remind you: the US didn’t win in South East Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos). It didn’t win in Afghanistan (just as Russia failed there too). And the only reason it has won (lossely applied) any recent war was due to a ‘coalition of the willing’.
Why should that ‘coalition’ have any fears at all? Failed democratic leadership is likely the problem and the answer to that problem is entirely within the capacity of revived democratic systems. Vote often, vote informed, vote if you wish to survive, vote for your kids, vote because you must.

“Australian musicians are among the team putting pressure on ANU Chancellor Julie Bishop and the ANU Council to abandon their plans to dismantle the School of Music. The team have called on Bishop to halt job cuts, continue its performance and composition majors, and maintain one-on-one music tuition in an open letter.
The open letter was written by the newly formed School of Music Advocacy Roundtable and signed by over 40 high-profile supporters.”
This is a bit of ‘Johnny-come-lately’, esp after the CSO had already made its position very clear on any thought of closing the #ANU #SchoolOfMusic by #JulieBishop ‘s Council Fiefdom. But any additional pressure is most welcomed. Keep it up guys, let’s pile it on.

TIL: the ANU is awash with #CASH:
“But here is the paradox: while education and staffing were cut, ANU’s financial wealth kept growing. By 2023, the university held over $2B in financial assets and recorded $3.4B in total net assets. It continued to run cash surpluses despite reporting accrual accounting deficits”AND that the financial crisis making the news and resulting in over 450 staff losses and plans to close some faculties are a direct result of the application of accrual accounting. This is an accounting practice that is necessary to run a business responsible to shareholders — but CANNOT be applied to education institutions which have a different raison d’etre and report to society (via parliaments).
#Managerialism and #NeoClassicEconomics responsible for the #FailedGovernance of ANU is made worse by the #Council’s use of ANU funds in speculative and #RealEstate investments partly funded by borrowings (Debt). These #NeoLiberal Council forays in #Productivism and #Capitalism are NOT core business to Universities. Not only is this the Absolutely Wrong Governance model to run a Uni, but it is currently grossly #Mismanaged and noone is taking responsibility for this, least of all #JulieBishop the #Chancellor of ANU.
Take a break and read the article, it is well written and explains much of what is going on. Furthermore, it provides the reasons why #Bishop should go and a sorely needed change to #Governance processes and responsibilities. If #JasonClaiMP can’t see this he’s a #FailedMinister

IF a business cannot operate with WFH employees, it means one of two things:
1) The work requires a human presence on the business’ premisses (in which case #Victoria #WFH legislation would not apply), or
2) The owner/manager of the business fears losing control of his employees.Either way, moving your business interstate to avoid the WFH legislation clearly demonstrates the owner/manager’s lack of capability to run a successful business. The State of Victoria is better off without those mediocre business owners and they would be doing workers in Victoria a favour if the moved out.

What this lawyer says about #youthCrime is not only ‘factual’ (he ought to know what he is talking about) but he is only telling us what every informed citizen about this highly politicised issue has known for decades (ney, centuries). Youth crime is a #SocialIssue best addressed by socially responsible policies which have nothing to do with #policing or the #Courts and criminal laws.
“"The vast majority of the children I deal with come with some kind of trauma, whether that is familial or family abuse, abuse while they have been in residential care, some kind of cognitive disorder or intellectual disability… developmental delays, some kind of disadvantage, trauma."
The Melbourne lawyer says while community understanding of family violence is growing, it doesn't always publicly appreciate the long-term impacts on children.” (Source: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-31/australian-state-and-territories-are-grappling-with-youth-crime/105355282?
If less of our #treasure was systematically transfered to the upper percentile of the moneyed population, there wouldn’t be so many ‘social’ drivers to youth delinquencyand crime.
#poverty and #illiteracy (or lack of education) are Political Choices made by our govt. We can change that. We can make a real difference to the socially disadvantaged portion of our society. But only if we wish to do so -- at the ballot box.
Sure, we’ve all got it tough. But why should we think we’re any better off just looking after our own interest if we leave so many people out of our decision making. We’re just perpetuating the thieving and making it worse over time. If we do nothing to stop the rorting, our great grandchildren will be youth crime statistics no matter how well we’ve done for ourselves. We’re all, basically, very selfish.

Linking better #pay to #productivity only fuels the fallacy that productivity increases come from workers working harder. This is a non-sequitur.Higher wages are required to maintain and improve livelyhood in society, yes. Business owners wishing to improve productivity must reinvest a portion of their profits to modernise production tooling and methods as well as expending funds into ‘research’ for such improvements.
Let’s not give the #grifting system ammunition to squeeze yet more ‘production’ out of workers using old and ineficient #tools and #processes.
Linking higher #wages to productivity is just as damaging as linking so-called wage #spirals to #inflation.#Economics101 - don’t fall for #neoliberal economic scams

Social media should be swamped with more of this:
“ABC staff work tirelessly to build and maintain the ABC’s independence and integrity. It is the board’s legal duty to protect that independence and integrity. But time and again we see ABC chairs and managing directors do the opposite.”
Source:
https://www.meaa.org/mediaroom/abc-staff-disgusted-by-handling-of-lattouf-case/Social Media should be swamped by similar statements from ABC employees (anonymously of course) and fair-dinkum journos ought to expose more… we ought to get back our ABC given we cannot fight the dis-misinformation crud our mainstream media outlets are dishing out.
Australians are owed the truth, not propaganda, nor ‘normalisation’ of abhorrent political swill.

"This isn’t a government; it’s a corporate concierge service."
That is #BernardKeane 's conclusion after enumerating the failures of the Minns govt in #NSW and crucifying the transport Minister Jo Haylen for her flippant disregard of public funds expenditure on her 'boozy trip' to Newcastle.
Apparently #Haylen is a a full member of the royal family of politician lifers. She never had another job that was not related to politics inside the #Labor party. Hence, completely out of touch.
And one wonders how it is that Labor (State and Federal) have lost touch with its foundational values. We are left to wonder why 'our Labor' is no longer concerned with our plight and why it is that there is so much cozying up to the big end of town.
Signaling our common disappointment Keane writes: "NSW Labor, in its three terms in opposition after the spectacular scandals, blatant corruption and in-fighting of its post-Carr years in government, learnt nothing about the importance of integrity in public office and its role in good government. It learnt only how to be electable again. It’s still a party that treats public resources as a private treasure chest, that gleefully politicises the public service, that sees only a seamless union of the private interests of MPs, the interests of NSW Labor and its union backers and the extended Labor family, and the public sector."
Bugger... where does that leave me at the next State election? What kind of choice am I really going to be given when all I want is #tranparency, #accountability and real #representation?

The renting market isn’t going to behave socially until our govt gets serious about social housing. No tinkering around the edges. Only a full blown social housing boom will make the required difference.

Gawd… how hard can it be to renounce colonialism, build an equitable and equal society for all who live on this borrowed land while recognising First Nations sovereignty? F** the monarchy..Parliament should be the ‘people’s house’, ALL of the people’s house. And in that house ‘truths’ should be heard and listened to.

I read:
'Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections.' So they should.
By #tomtanuki | 2 November 2024 published on #independentaustralia (dot)net, and I got fired up. Not so much by this particular article, but too many similar pieces read over the past year. I needed to rant for a while…The thing about ‘internationalism’ is there are too many goddamn issues to care about. Getting over one’s obsession with whatever dreadful event is happening around the globe is dead easy since so many other inhumane actions can take it’s place. In the end, we are led by the nose by what we are told (from various outlets) and we rage against the loudest grievance. While I deplore the loss of life in the Middle East I will not be monopolised in this way. I fear as much as a third of the global population is suffering horrendous aggression and my heart goes out to them all, not selectively but to them all equally.
I funnel my ‘internationalist’ rage through the ballot box, conversations with friends and not-so-friends not by advocating for a particular national or ethnic community, but for all living things based on the turn of the conversation.
You are free, of course, to rage and fight on a very limited aspect of the human condition - that is your right. I just think that the scope is too narrow and tends to create zealots rather than change agents. Keepingour attent focused on the ‘news’ peddled by the msm, aided by social media, is playing into the hands of those responsible for aggressions perpetrated elsewhere, out of the limelight. The old saying: charity begins at home, is worth thinking about is its broader context. And when it comes to activism, combined with exemplar behaviour, we can ‘lead by example’ and change the world around us.
I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Now? All of a sudden? How is that not an ‘upper management failure’? I’ll bet that if you follow the money, you’ll get to some high level bean counting or an investment gone wrong issue. But of course (as in Parliament and the banking system) it’s always the fault of someone else down the line of responsibility or the academic staff suffers the consequences as always. #InUnity #ANUFinancialFiasco #ANUTertiary Institutions should get back to core business (not business) and Govt ought to be progressive and fund them adequately in the first instance.

As much as I do not support her politics, I give her 10 out of 10 for saying the quiet bit out load. We don’t want a King of any kind but especially not from a colonial Royal House. -
Just because I rant against 'gatekeepers' and the oligarchy, I happen to have tooted (in a round about way) about the recording industry. This has led me to learn about mirlo.space. A musician lead community that sounds like it's doing all the right things by the artist.
"Our mission
The music industry does not work for musicians or listeners and needs a radical re-imagination.
Mirlo is a community of musicians, listeners, and coders who are daring to do just that: taking lessons learned in working in the solidarity economy and applying them to our process and product.
We are building an online audio distribution (think Bandcamp) and patronage (think Patreon) platform that aims to be radical, accessible, open source (free & libre), modular, and standards based.
Behind the platformOur members have experience working both within Resonate and Ampled, other co-ops across several industries, and complex high-traffic web platforms. We envision this platform as a tool to support musicians in cultivating direct and reciprocal relationships and resources to sustain one another’s creative practice."
If you're a musician, check it out @mirlo
