Mao was #falling into darkness. The ground neared, sprinkled with red warty wind-head mushrooms. “If you hit bottom, you die,” she thought and woke with a start.
“Ugh,” she was clammy with sweat and her stomach twisted. “Bile,” she labeled the taste in her mouth.
Like déjà vu; she saw Gram's face in the fog surrounding her bed. “Wake up, lazybones,” the wraith said.
“Tsk,” Gram clicked her tongue. “Sleeping in that dress. If you’ve spoiled it, you’ll deal with Lady Ah-Duo.”
That made no sense to Mao. “Had Tianya stolen it from Lady Ah-due? Why would she have such a monstrosity?” Her thoughts tumbled chaotically.
Mao sat up to the sounds of crickets and cicadas. When she #turned her head to look for them, the world whirled by like a kaleidoscope with the madam’s face distorted and looking like an evil cicada at the center.

Until my eyes adjusted to the emerald light, I thought we were still on Gardner Island. I could hear the surf, now sluggish, and the air was warm and humid.
My first hint that we had truly moved in time was the smell. The air still reeked of decay but now carried a resinous tang and the heavy musk of mud. Insect buzzing and a cicada-like chorus replaced the clicking of crabs.
As my eyes adjusted, the first thing I saw was a slow-moving stream edged with cattails as tall as me. It’s muddy water mixed with the turquoise ocean, lying in front of me. Turning around, I saw we were standing under tall conifers mixed with tree ferns. Their broad fronds filtered the light, casting a lush stained-glass pattern on the thick blanket of ferns and moss beneath them.
Emily gasped and pointed upward. Through a gap in the fern fronds, I saw small pterodactyls swooping down over the ocean like swallows.
“Jurassic Park,” I said.
She #gave me an odd look. “Park?”
The joke had gone right over her head. “It was a film,” I explained.
“The Lost World, Conan Doyle,” she said, matching my tone. I had the advantage, though. I’d heard of that.
“Journey to the Center of the Earth, Jules Verne,” I said. She would know that one.
“But we’re outside.” Emily’s comment #stemmed the flow of titles.
“Touché,” I said and watched her smile grow broader.
“Don’t move; there’s a damson fly on your back,” Emily said, stepping toward me. She slowly reached out to catch it, only for her hand to close on nothing. Her smile faded. “I forgot I’m a ghost. It’s still there. It’s huge and has lovely gold eyes and translucent blue wings. I wanted to show it to you.”
“I smiled and let her mispronunciation of damselfly pass. It was cute, given her normally proper speech.

"The EPA signed a proposal Wednesday that would deem the chemicals "hazardous constituents" under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
"For the agency to consider a substance a hazardous constituent, it has to be toxic or cause cancer, genetic mutation or the malformations of an embryo. The full list of the nine substances can be found here.
"The agency cited various studies in which forever chemicals were found to cause a litany of "t#oxic effects" in humans and #animals, including, but not limited to cancer, a decreased response to vaccinations, #HighCholesterol, decrease in #fertility in women, #preeclampsia, #thyroid disorders and #asthma, the EPA said.
"Short for "per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances," PFAS cover thousands of man-made chemicals. PFAS are often used for manufacturing purposes, such as in #NonstickCookware, #adhesives, #firefighting foam, #turf and more [ex, #SkiWax].
"PFAS have been called "forever chemicals" because they break down very slowly and can accumulate in people, animals and the environment. Last summer, a study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that the man-made chemicals are present in nearly half the country's tap water supply.
"The survey tested for 32 types of PFAS, though there are more than 12,000, the USGS said, and they can pose a health threat even at very small amounts.
"In June, the chemical manufacturer 3M said it would pay about $10 billion in lawsuit settlements to help detoxify water supplies across the country, after plaintiffs claimed the company's firefighting foam and other products were responsible for contaminating #TapWater with PFAS.
"The proposed rule will be open for #PublicComment once it is uploaded to the Federal Register, under docket number EPA-HQ-OLEM-2023-0278."

It would be unpleasant if they got caught in the middle. Many of Dunkelfelger’s lords were still loyal to the former king, who now ruled Blumenfeld, especially the older lords whose #lands were in the countryside.
As the last girl left, Sorrona sighed and began to slouch until she noticed her lady's maid’s #grim look.
“I hope it wasn’t too much trouble asking you to stay, Lady Hannelore. Aub Rozemyne speaks fondly of you, and she sends Mestionora’s blessings and hopes that Dregarnuhr will soon bind your threads with hers.”
“It was no trouble. I, too, hope that Dregarnuhr’s loom will soon bring us together,” Hannelore replied, wondering why Sorrona had wanted a private interview with her. Her worries grew when Sorrona took an anti-eavesdropping tool from her maid and said, “Shall we?”
“Most certainly,” Hannelore replied. She took out a similar tool.

In the late 1940s this box contained the world's first telemetry equipment used in captured German V2 rockets that were being tested at White Sands Proving Grounds, NM!

"My problem with time sinks," said an owlish character who'd appeared out of nowhere, "is how quickly they get filled up, if you don't keep on top of cleanup, and then you don't even want to touch the time in them--so nasty and crusty--but you don't have any clean time anywhere, so ... We're not talking about the same type of time sink, are we."
Jasper gave a slow, disbelieving shake of the head.
