  1. Once through #Wroxham #Bridge and past the mass of #boatyards you begin to pass a range of #riverside mansions, houses, chalets and bungalows. None of those shown here are the most impressive of the properties.

  2. Turns out the forecast was good for today and tomorrow so, after learning yesterday that #Wroxham Bridge was passable, we set off for an overnight cruise. #boatsthattoot #boating #norfolkbroads #river

  3. Some friends took the video a few weeks ago. Here's a couple of images from the 5000 word report, one shows the ice stopping us reach out favourite bay on Bridge Broad, #Wroxham. The other one of the angler's boats we encountered in our return.

Can't see it working on my home waters where there's often less than three feet of water under you, a slight problem with airdraft and speed limits not exceeding 5mph and often down to 3mph.

But I'd love to play with one.

As you see you don't need charts to navigate the Broads. You just follow signposts.😂

"The Wash" is the square bite out of the east coast of #England that separates the East Cost of #Lincolnshire and the North coast of #Norfolk.

"The Broads" are the collection of rivers and their associated flooded medieval peat diggings that drain into the North Sea at #GreatYarmouth and #Lowestoft, the most easterly point of England.

Here's the bridge in question, over the #River #Thurne. Headroom at the top of the arch is around 6ft currently. It is downstream of #Hickling Broad, the the largest of the broads, some 1,500 acres. There's also the #Martham #Broad (approx 150 acres) and #Horsey #Mere (82 acres) above it and various other lesser stretches of water. There is some tidal effect below the bridge, sufficient after heavy rain and at high Spring tides to stop water flowing downstream through the bridge and hence keep water levels high above the bridge.

  7. I received a letter from the #UK #government Department of Work & Pensions (#dwp) recently. It was sent to my old address and had arrived thanks to the forwarding service of #RoyalMail.

They told me I couldn't do it online due to one of the answers I gave, so I made a phone call.

After 30 minutes of repeatedly being told they knew I was #waiting it was great to speak to a human with a thoroughly #English accent. I could understand her and enjoy a little chit chat. Since my #teenage #years I've been known by my middle name. That's common in Ireland, I was told. She confessed to having Irish relatives in her family.

But to the point of this toot! I really should have told her that #Google reckons the number I rang belongs to a company called "Funerals on a Budget". After the call a dialogue appeared asking me #laughing I managed to close the #dialogue before answering.

  8. We'd emailed the wonderful Liam of midlandsandcoast.co.uk/ to try to sort out a #coal delivery to #ourplace which fronts the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal. I took a photo of his #boat last time we got #fuel from him. It's based the same distance on one side of #PrestonBrook #bridge as we are the other. This time I needed an emergency supply. He gave me a bag, lent me a barrow to carry it home and said he'd invoice me when he delivered all we have room to store.

As I collected the fuel the sun came out to reveal The Midlands & Coast Canal Carriers Ltd yard in all its glory.

I'm beginning to learn that there's a good range of material on #Hive which contain #hints on #strategy and #tactics. And just reading the tip headings is enough to tell me I'm a pretty #useless #player.

  16. This afternoon I began trimming the #willow beside our #house. To launch the #dinghy to get the from-the-boat view I had to trim an #oak. I have a fair few trimmings to get rid of, which have been dumped on a nearby causeway I created on neighbouring land a few years ago that needs building up a bit after a very wet 2024. I still have to finish stripping the oak branches so they can be added to the #causeway too. Hopefully, I'll finish clearing the trimmings tomorrow when the main paths are due for another #mowing. Does this count as #composting the #trimmings.

If all this seems a little mad it's because I may not have to do it for much longer. We agreed the sale of the house a few weeks ago. That's the main reason I've been quiet. Too busy #househunting.

  17. Last time I submitted two images in a day to #BBC #WeatherWatchers they were both used on the #earlyEvening #News on BBC #LookEast Here's hoping for the same again.

Tomorrow is Diana's chemotherapy session. Hopefully, the water leak will be sorted by the end of the day and we can have another go at getting to our mooring on Saturday. However, fixing the leak requires the shower tray to be lifted (probably for the first time in 45 years), so who knows how smoothly it will go.

  23. I've found time to record the launch but it's not all good news. We still have the clatter in the "gearbox" when in gear but not under load. The noise disappears as soon as you add some revs. As you'll read at:
    gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23090
    and
    gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23090
we now reckon that it's not the gearbox but the reduction gear that is producing the noise and that, we're told, is a problem as it's not a part still in production.

  24. Singing the Blues is launched. But the fault in the gearbox still exists after one engineer has had two goes at fixing it and a second a third go. No wonder the boat was being sold! I'll update
    gregafloat.org.uk/safari/
in the next day or two!

  25. The tank is back but still not fitted. The new tank has metric fittings. All the ancillary pipework now has to be changed to match the fittings. However, launch day is still to be Monday, when the work on the gearbox can be tested. The BSS Examiner will also call and, hopefully, issue a pass certificate. We can then pay the #BroadsAuthority toll and legally move the boat to our mooring in Colitshall on Tuesday.

  26. Dropped in on the boatyard today to see what the arrangements were for the revisit of the BSS examiner. The fuel tank was still not connected. It had to be returned to the manufacturer to be rebuilt. The internal baffles had been fitted horizontally, but there was to be no bung for a fuel level sensor to be fitted, as we will rely on the existing dip stick built into the filler cap. Result: the dip stick couldn't reach the bottom of the tank!
