On the way back I took a couple of photos showing #bridges over the stream that would run alongside the #lane. Would, because it was bone dry at the moment. The bridges take obviously what must be almost unused #public #footpaths that my map says link the lane with various points along the main road.

Just before crossing the main road I discovered another #shaft that I'd failed to notice on the way out. Strange, because it must be three times the diameter of the others.

Once back on the #towpath north of the #tunnel, I couldn't resist a final photo of a group of #mallard rushing towards us. I guess they were expecting us to feed them.

We could have crossed at the #stoplock to get to the #DryDock but we stayed on the #towpath side walking just a little further to try and get some varied views of the dry dock before we turned round to return to the cottage.

Back in April I mentioned the terrace of cottages on the Bridgewater Canal and the history page I'm building about it. The article mentions "Cotton's Bridge" and includes an old map showing its location.

We were at the cottage back in May and I took these two images of the site of the bridge. You have to be travelling north, having just emerged from Dutton Tunnel to appreciate the narrowing of the canal at the site of the old bridge.

As you will work out the cottages you see to the left of one of the images are part of the terrace numbered 7-12.

We often visit our granddaughter who lives with her Mum in Sale and stay for a few days in a cottage that was probably built in the 1770s and sits on the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. The building of the Bridgewater Canal kick-started the Industrial Revolution and the cottage was built at what was to become its junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal. There's a whole lot of history there which I'm beginning uncover in this article.

  9. We'd emailed the wonderful Liam of midlandsandcoast.co.uk/ to try to sort out a #coal delivery to #ourplace which fronts the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal. I took a photo of his #boat last time we got #fuel from him. It's based the same distance on one side of #PrestonBrook #bridge as we are the other. This time I needed an emergency supply. He gave me a bag, lent me a barrow to carry it home and said he'd invoice me when he delivered all we have room to store.

As I collected the fuel the sun came out to reveal The Midlands & Coast Canal Carriers Ltd yard in all its glory.

  11. #Austrians are so much obsessed with their Treppelwege, and with doing them right that in some parts there is an ending and begining of #Treppelweg sign in every intersection.

And portable Treppelweg signs if there is a disturbance in the Treppelweg equilibrium.

There must be some legal status beyond historical to these one migth think!

Turns out yes. And it’s not very interesting! jusline.at/gesetz/schfg/paragr

Now I wonder how Germans and other countries survive without proper #towpath signage ;)

  13. I walked & jogged 30km(!) today: North from #Oxford along the #towpath, and then via the cycle path to #Woodstock and back again.

Took a bit of a nasty tumble on the way back, but had my first aid kit with me so patched myself up ok.

    I spotted two signs with errant #punctuation, which I present here for your teeth-grinding pleasure ... #exercise #walking #jogging #WeightLoss #FatKnacker #oxfordshire #grammar
