Okay, so there's a joke in the community about having "Talismans" on your bike, and I want to turn into the skid and take it a little more literally. I already have a Nazar on my saddlebag, but I'd love to inscribe some wards/glyphs/sigils/runes as I build it up, and I'm looking for ideas.
I'm building the wheels, and wheelbuilders already frequently hang a loop around the hub, so that could be an interesting place to hang something.
Etching protective glyphs along the fender is kind of what got me down this rabbithole.
I know rotating circles are supposed to be powerful, so inscribing something along the rims might be interesting.
I'm open to ideas from any culture or tradition, but would prefer to avoid christian/angelic iconography. Just not my speed.
This bike is moving in a bit of a goblincore direction, and I'd like to lean into that.
I'm open to trading mechanic expertise for favors, or skillsharing!

It’s both a blessing and a curse that I live relatively close to the manufacturer of the Comandante Grinder. I’ve always wanted one, but I find them too pricey and today they have an Outlet Day, where they sell grinders with minor cosmetic manufacturing issues, at a discount. Did I just buy the most beautiful Walnut veneer grinder at 50% discount? Yes! (The blessing). Is my wallet happy? Oh, no! (The curse, it’s still pricey at 50% off). I’ll never again be annoyed by brewing guides recommending X clicks on the Comandante 😂 It’s perfect, even if the logo etching is not uniform, but 50% off for THAT? It’s a crazy deal IMHO, I had to buy it 😅

The dense web of stairs and railings in *The Crossing* fractures the scene into cramped, overlapping chambers. Each figure moves with purpose—yet the handwritten labels below suggest a system, not chaos. What unspoken rule governs their paths?

The umbrella’s ribs cast sharp, radial shadows across the figure’s coat, while sheep huddle beneath its shelter. Rain blurs the street into a textured gray field, suggesting movement without sound.
Why does the sheep on the right turn its head as if listening?

Rembrandt’s dense cross-hatching swallows Tobit’s robe, leaving only his luminous beard untouched by ink. The firelit shadow stretching toward an empty doorway suggests a man reaching for what he cannot see.
How does the contrast between light and shadow shape the emotional weight of the scene?

Rain slicks the cobblestones, pooling around the hooves of sheep huddled beneath an umbrella’s uneven arc. The etched lines deepen where water collects, suggesting weight and movement rather than stillness.
Why does the umbrella’s shadow fall not beneath it, but toward the viewer?

The umbrella’s ribs cast sharp, parallel shadows across the figure’s back, while sheep huddle beneath its shelter. This quiet moment suggests refuge amid urban isolation—why does the rain blur the street’s edges but leave the sheep’s wool so precisely defined?

Rain softens the clustered roofs of an abbey farm, each etched line dissolving into mist. Legros’s delicate hatching captures the weight of stillness in rural labor—what details reveal the hands that shaped this land?

"Der Wolf im Schnee" captivates with its striking contrast, showcasing a lone wolf against a desolate winter landscape. The interplay of light and shadow immerses us in the wilderness's quiet intensity. How does this piece resonate with your view of solitude?

@allisonwyss @whatzaname @orionkidder @joehumphrey When I don't break, the characters and action does. I do it only rarely, and only when it feels right. It's always a sprint not exactly a marathon, but the reader is welcome to grab a bottle of water before jumping back into the race.
In the context of the current 130K novel, one chapter wants to be like this and it's 10K. It goes from MC and love interest, each of who are competing for control, feeling a weird synergy (love, [spoilers], or both?), to dinner, dancing, desserts, and asking about his "etchings", to... uh, hem. The next chapter is the greatest mystery of the whole book, and is 600 words long.

@ami_angelwings This one I don't have to struggle with: The Doctor, Star Trek: Voyager.
Start with Robert Picardo, an amazing actor. Then, even though it's "outsider looking in at humanity" for the fourth time in a row, and even though it's Voyager, manage to develop him as a character slowly but consistently over 7 seasons. And make him sarcastic, and arrogant, and half the time he's right to be arrogant and the other half he gets humbled.
I love The Doctor.

@ami_angelwings Here's an offbeat one: the Chief of CONTROL, from the 1960s series Get Smart, played by Edward Platt. His job was to convince himself every week that it was still a good idea to send Maxwell Smart on assignments while also trying not to strangle him. Platt was very very good at doing a slow burn.
(I think this counts as a C? His real first name comes up once, but everyone calls him Chief, and it's even how he's listed in the credits.)

It’s all very French, an “inhabited initial” by François Emile Ehrmann with a topless woman, i think in a gillotage, a resin-based etching, made by Yves & Barret based on an engraving by Tilly. A team effort! The model who sat for the picture is not named.
Yesterday i posted the crescent moon here.
Etchings tend to feature blunter line-endings than engravings on metal.

Moonlight Etchings of the Forgotten Artist who Taught Edward Hopper
"Martin Lewis died in obscurity in 1962; a retired art teacher who had found some success in his early career, but was largely forgotten after the Great Depression took away the demand for his craft, leaving Lewis to spend his last three decades teaching other people how to etch. History chose Edward Hopper, but Martin Lewis was his mentor."
