Omar Little is one of the best, most complex characters in The Wire, and certainly one of the most memorable in a great show full of well written characters.

He is a bandit and a rogue in a city and show run by organized factions.

Omar robs drug dealers. Habitually. In a show about drug dealers.

It's a difficult way to earn a living. His prey are armed criminals who expect violence. And yet, he catches someone lacking each time, making off with their product and escaping into a neighborhood that prefers him to the dope boys selling poison to the community. He's far from an honorable robin hood type, which is to be expected in a show as steeped in compromises and grey morality as the Wire. They further complicate him by making him gay in a show made in 2005. His lovers are frequently immature gay men who also represent his weakness. Omar is a romantic, or at least he cares about his partners more than a lot of the other characters.

He whistles as he approaches, shotgun slung on his back, danger in his eyes, sometimes alone, sometimes with help, and always, always with a plan.

He's the closest thing to a dashing rogue the Wire has, and one of the easiest to root for.

Easy pick. go watch The Wire if you haven't. I'm glad I did, even if I only saw it 15 years after it premiered. I'm glad I've gotten at least one live action property on my #FavCharacterAtoZ, even if it didn't happen until #FavCharacterO

The last of the "big giant women" in my #FavCharacterAtoZ is Noi from Dorohedoro. Her name is a pun on No. 1

Noi is fun and boisterous, if a little naive. In a world where magic and intrigue go hand in hand, she survives off of the ridiculous strength of her magic and her body. At 210 cm (6'10) She stands head and shoulders over much of the cast and has, of all things, extremely healing magic. She uses this to turn herself into an unkillable juggernaut who can shrug off wounds and protect her teammates as well as heal them.

Noi is a rare example of a big bitch who also gets to be the object of desire in her own story. More than one character remarks on her physical beauty, which is hella welcome considering the typical anime beauty standard. She's big and popular and her team appreciates her and the world around her does too. Her limit is her ambition, which is smaller than her power. It makes her a great teammate.

She's selfless, frustratingly so sometimes, but easily my favorite character that manga.

I'm halfway through my #favCharacterAtoZ. I gotta wrap that up ASAP

Halfway through #FavCharacterAtoZ and I get another easy one.

#FavCharacterM? Street Fighter 6's Marisa is a top 3 character for me in terms of fun while playing her and also in aesthetics.

She's a giant, hulking italian jewelry designer whose fighting style is pulled from antiquity of classic greece and rome to make her this sort of proto MMA fighter. She's a true Brawler and I love her.

She's big and flirty in game, and half her quotes are innuendos.

"Taste my love! Take ALL of it!"

She blatantly propositions at least two characters, including series giant grappler Zangief, who responds with concern that her offer to "partner up" doesn't mean tag team wrestling...

So from a presentation standpoint, she's far and away my favorite part of Street Fighter 6 and a top 2 Street Fighter character for me, only in competition with Dudley (https://c.im/@NaClKnight/116801550872200497

She's also extremely fun to play, as evidences by mee sinking in probably 70-80% of my 800 hours in the game playing her. She's got this high damage, very linear, moveset that makes frequent use of armor and charging her heaviest moves by holding down the button. She's got a super parry, which I haven't gotten to use since Hakumen https://c.im/@NaClKnight/116921817939120601 and almost singlehandedly established me as the "big body enthusiast" among my fighting game friends.

She's got some issues with her moves that Capcom refuses to remedy, and I don't think they'll ever make her a top tier character for high level play, but that won't stop me from loving this big giant flirty gal, or from me putting tastefully thicc mods on her when I play.

This woman makes Street Fighter 6 fun for me, and I'm looking forward to hitting 1000 hours played because it means more of her.

My #FavCharacterL was a difficult one, cause I have some "really likes" but no "loves"

Luke Cage is one of Marvel's most prominent Black heroes, a Blacksploitation era superhero who fights crime in New York alongside Daredevil, Iron Fist, and his wife Jessica Jones. But he's consistently felt like a Black character written by/for white people.

Lulu is Final Fantasy (10)'s original big tiddy goth girl, but there's not much more to her than that, and they write her out of the sequel (FFX-2) in favor of a new character (Payne)

Instead I'm going with Luke Sullivan from Street Fighter 5 and 6.

Luke is a funny pick because I picked him up not for his playstyle, but because someone noted his similarity to ME personally.

"He's an MMA fighter who likes gaming, working out, and is associated with the military like you. Why DON'T you play him?"

In game, Luke is the series' most prominent himbo. He's loud, cheerful, playful, and a total gym bro. He mostly compliments his opponents in his win quotes and serves as the coach and mentor for the player's created character in the Street Fighter 6 World Tour mode. He served in the army before separating, which is where he interacted with series regualrs Ken and Guile.

Luke joins Alex and Rashid as characters Capcom hoped to succeed Ryu as the series' protagonist, but Luke has too much personality for that.

Even Luke's biggest attack is a meme:
He lifts and slams the opponent for some good ol fashioned MMA ground and pound, but while the english VA SAYS "you picked the wrong guy to MESS WITH!" Street fighter 6's most famous mondegreen is "We're all going down to MEMPHIS!" instead

Playstyle wise he occupies a role as the newest Shoto, borrowing concepts from Ken and Ryu without dislodging them. His projectile is too fast to help him approach but doesn't go fullscreen, meaning it serves as a whiff punish or harassment tool , kinda like Cable's heavy punch (gun) in Marvel 3. His "tatsu" is instead a multifunctional combo tool that requires near perfect timing to get maximum damage out of it, and he compliments that with the ability to spend meter for extra damage folllowups on his enhanced special moves, requiring a different kind of precision than the other shotos.

Luke's my pocket character in Street Fighter 6, the one I also *should* play more of, even if he's not a common pick at the highest levels of play. He's cool, and he's cool with me.

#FavCharacterJ is Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk,aka Shulk, aka Shulkie,

Jenn is one of a loooong series of "girl version of established character" but has successfully differentiated herself. Hulk explores having and losing and regaining control, but She-Hulk has a job as a lawyer that she performs in and out of her powers (usually). She explores the intersection of normal Humans and superheroes, often in humorous ways but frequently serious and almost always interesting. She's her own character, and no character in comics is subject to the dramatic variance in physique that she is.

She-Hulk defending superpowered characters from unintended consequences or legal liability is as fun as her using her gamma powers to throw cars at problems. I'm here for it.

Comic artists draw "the biggest woman you still find attractive" and then color her green and call it a day. That goes double for fanart, producing a character who's shape varies wildly from comic to comic. Is she 180cm? 210? 240? How big are her biceps? How about her bust? or her waist?

She is a reflection of the artist's taste in a way Batman, Spiderman, or even Wonder Woman aren't. Is hard to draw her "off model" when cannonical depictions vary so wildly

Shulk is funny, powerful, interesting, and media doesn't have nearly enough big giant women

Apologies to Power Girl aka Karen Starr, who I would have loved to write about under other circumstances, but....

My #FavCharacterK is Avatar Korra

She's divisive because she's alternately exciting and frustrating and her default is "try punching it (harder)" and her show has some definite YA tropes*

But fuck all that. Korra is my favorite Avatar. She's direct, confrontational, earnest, and loyal, none of which are guarantees from an avatar. She a fighter, attractive, funny, and not afraid to apply direct solutions even if they go awry. She's also a professional athlete in story, which I loved a short exploration of celebrity, pro sports, and fame from an ostensible spiritual leader.

KORRA IS LIKE IF YOU COULD TURN ON TV AND SEE THE POPE DUNK ON SOMEONE.

EVERY WEEK

She struggles with Wind the way Aang struggled with Earth, and that bit of characterization via powers always makes me appreciate a media more. The soft, flexible approach is the one where struggles with.

She's my clear choice for "the fandom dislikes her but I will never not defend her" and also my clear choice for "K"

Iskandar is the Rider servant summoned during Fate:Zero. He's larger than life and by turns jolly and fearsome. the self-styled King of Conquerors is based on Alexander the Great but his anime depiction focuses on his role as military leader and focal point of the dreams of his men. Big, boisterous, and benevolent he's got comedy moments about trying to understand the modern world alongside his deadly serious fights against other servants.

Iskandar gallantly charges forward, leading a host of soldiers called forth from his signature power, his Noble Phantasm. Iskandar is a mentor to his summoner in a way no other character in the anime is, and his summoner is one of a few to lose the grail war but escape with his life.

Iskandar is inspirational to me, but he's also a reminder that the characters i like most are seldom the focal points of the media they appear in. I don't need to be the main character either; i just need to leave lasting positive impact on the people around me

Big, brolic, friendly, earnest, kind, strong. He's an easy pick and bright spot from a show and series I otherwise dislike

My #FavCharacterI is a brawny fantasy warrior who's bigger and more macho than most of his peers, has a cool magical power, and lets me shout out an H-named character from the same series who lost their AtoZ slot to Hakumen.

Ike is my favorite Fire Emblem character, and the only real competition he has is the character who inspired him (Hector). Ike inverts a lot of the stereotypes about Fire Emblem main characters while managing to fit the trend of Blue haired sword weilders.

The difference is that is a commoner, not a prince. He is the son of a mercenary captain who fought for the enemy army before the events of the game. He is a high strength, high defense brawler instead of a high skill finesse technician. He weilds his giant sword with one or two hands in a way that recalls Guts from Berserk. In Smash bro's Ike is heavy, slow and fearsome, with some ridiculous KO potential that almost undersells how sturdy he can be in his home game.

He has a magic sword and a blood feud with a faceless Black Knight and ends up drawn into a war for the soul of the continent and the soul of a goddess.

He's not snarky or subtle, and his early missions involve re-recruiting some of his father's troops who desert their mercenary company in the wake of his father's plot relevant death after the prologue. Ike feels gritty and brawny and down to Earth in a way that few Fire Emblem characters before or since have. He along with Fox were my Smash mains for the decade+ I played that series..

Also she's a fantastic fighter with very strong attacks and her chain attacks are cool as hell. >_>

Technically her full name is Aoi Himezaki, but the game and her calls her Zaki and are you going to argue with her about what her name is?

I guess I should finally do my #FavCharacterZ

I've been debating this hard b/c I really like Zorro, he's good & kind & fights for the oppressed.

Instead I'm going to pick Zaki from Rival Schools/Project Justice, a teenage gangleader bad girl who led an all-girl gang called the "5000 Ladies" (which actually had 5000 members) & was sent to private school which didn't do anything. She's recruited into Akira's team as part of the Seiyun Girl's High School team, and I ship them.

She doesn't take s- from anybody & will gladly kill you with one of the many chains she keeps on her body if you threaten her or her friends. & she can be surprisingly sweet (to Akira).

Also she will smack you with her girlfriend if you piss her off.

@[email protected] We end where we began. My favourite character whose name begins with Z is Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan of Farscape (Pa'u is a title, not her name). Former rebel, murderer, escaped convict (it had to be done!) Zhaan overcame her violent nature through meditation and new-found devotion to the religion of her people and was for her tenure the most spiritually potent member of Moya's crew during her tenure.

Aside from her own merits, Zhaan is an excellent model of how Vulcans might be depicted in Star Trek if we wanted to foreground their struggle with intense emotion and keeping that under control via Surak's teachings, or how one might depict a TTRPG-style space cleric (or wizard) who is sometimes called upon to do wizard stuff but is mostly there to be a person informed by her faith and philosophy and long experience.

Tragically Virginia Hey had to leave the role for her health (AIUI the blue makeup was damaging her kidneys) and so Zhaan was killed off in the third season, but her character was beautiful in every way. She was wise and kind and fierce and dangerous and loving and at times sadistic ("Part of me enjoyed hurting you").

So there you have it. Aeryn to Zhaan, those are some of my favourite characters. #FavCharacterAtoZ, #FavCharacterZ

#FavCharacterH is very important to me. H might be my most important letter.

H is for Hakumen. Hakumen is why I'm "NaClKnight"

I played Blazblue throughout college with my first real fighting game buddy. We played a lot of games but BlazBlue was the most even between us and most consistent.

Hakumen can be frustrating to play with (his movement is either slow, costly, or high commitment, he has no projectiles, and all his special moves cost meter, let alone his supers), but he can also be frustrating to play against (has very quick parries, has 2 good pokes, has big, dangerous sword swings, has very high damage potential and steals rounds) so we started riffing on him.

We called him the Salty Samurai. I play good defense and make approaching me difficult and costly.

Salty Samurai eventually became NaClKnight cause I thought it was clever to use the chemical formula for Table Salt and retain the alliteration. And I like Knights more than Samurai

So I started using that for tourneys online and IRL, where people pronounce it Nackle or Salt or SaltKnight.

Eventually i took Blazblue Central Fiction seriously and got pretty good. Enough to be a server's best Hakumen and show up in their top 4 in a few tourneys. I love Hakumen. I hate most of Blazblue's pixie ass anime stereotype ass mahou shoujo ass roster. But gahdamn i love playing Hakumen

I don't like the story mode of Blazblue at all, but that's mostly cause I dislike overly convoluted stories with too many proper nouns, but in Universe Hakumen is a hero. Jin was a rising star in the military assigned to apprehend his criminal brother. Then things got spooky. He, his brother, and a creepy robot girl all fell into a hole in the world. Jin lost his physical body but someone poured his soul inot this suit of armor. The whole experience gave him perspective.

As Hakumen, he helped kill the giant magical beast plaguing humanity. He's the first of the Six Heroes. And when he was done killing the black Beast, humanity threw him into the abyss, hoping the rolling waves of chaos would kill him.

Hakumen survived, weakened and angry.

In game he represents the order of an upside down world trying to right itself.

He has a cool ass mantra to boot.

Hakumen is an all time character for me across any medium. Faceless. Vigilant., Resolute. Just. Powerful.

He calls himself The White Void. The Just Blade. The Cold Steel. I call him my favorite.

@ami_angelwings Here we are indeed, #FavCharacterZ in time travel. I've been waffling. Zari Tomaz from "Legends of Tomorrow" was in the running. But in the end, there's a science fiction gap on my list, and one humanoid who can fill it here.

Zathras. Babylon 5 is now on the time travel list (along with Babylon 4). I was listening, Zathras. We cannot run out of time, time is infinite... we are finite. And the list is finite.

For #FavCharacterZ I picked out Zen Wisteria, 2nd prince of the kingdom of Clarines in the manga (and anime adaptation), "Snow White with the Red Hair." He's just a really good guy. I don't know how to put it better than that. Smart, skilled, hates getting stuck with paperwork, understands two-way loyalty, caring, all that good stuff. I highly recommend the anime.

Zorro. Most any version, just the whole concept. Absolute Batman this, Absolute that, and Johnson McCulley already gave us decades of stories, movies, music and comics about how some assholes need a beatdown as a warning of what's really waiting for them, a message even the tame 90s Family Channel show fully embraced.

@ami_angelwings Zorro, played by Guy Williams. Watched a lot of that show as a kid. As an adult it’s interesting also to think about all the political/historical stuff featured in it, like how everybody was Spanish or Mexican in California, and the like.

Thank you so much for this thread. It’s been a lot of fun thinking about characters and reading about everybody else’s favorites.
