Clearing roadblocks in the way of firing up a color furnace.

I am consulting with Mike, who melts color at a big public glass studio in Brooklyn in Gowanus, and for another factory in West Virginia. I know I want a dark, ambery brown. We are going to get 100 pounds of Spruce Pine "color base" - all the raw ingredients for the HotShop glass- minus the decolorants.

We plan on using some of sulfur, black charcoal, and sugar along with a touch of black nickel to darken it up along with a few other things to tint it.

I CNDd a thick scrap of MDF to make a lid for the cement mixer- which Mike mentioned is one of the best ways to mix it up- essential for proper glass. I also cleaned it from refractory cement with hammer, chisel and power washer.

The furnace burner still needs to get its gas/air ratio set with a test firing, and I gotta find a time to rent 2 workstations (it's in the corner between them)

Tha AI part of those bits of firewood-to-be is the original “art”. If all you use your #cnc machine for is to reproduce someone else’s work, then you are no better than an AI prompt jockey. But these machines also open up so many other possibilities. I’m a pretty crap woodworker but I can use the machine to create my own designs. (The clock was from plans created by Clayton Boyer)

CNC doesn't decide which joinery to use. or how to design your project. it is merely a tool. I fail to see comparison to AI

There is so many great countries were we need to start making things again! Pass the knowledge to future generation.

I see a lot of new things being made in Portugal lately, such as #bikes, #procelain and #clothes

I know we do injection molding in #switzerland and lots of machinery, #cnc and #precisiontools are very much still a thing here, but competition is hard and many many things are coming from China nowadays.

We need to start innovating again in #manufacturing , knowledge and making should be distributed and not centralized! Good for China for having it all nowadays, we need to do the same. From farming to space parts manufacturing, we need to have it all, everywhere, not in a single place, not in a single country.

this more or less came out acceptably for a prototype. i messed up something in the tool parameters so the chamfers are all hosed. gonna experiment on some softer materials before I kill more chamfer bits

Got a little work done on the CNC machine this week. Not much to see but Linuxcnc is up and running now.
The computer has been off since 2020 so I am happy to see it up and running.
A lot has changed since then and I will need to change the original plan. The original set up was to use a couple of serial BOBs but I have moved away from that to an Eithercat setup. Linuxcnc will need to be reinstalled using the newest release.

Does anyone know of a small crayon bot. Some small 20-30cm rig cnc that can hold crayons and draw pre-planned drawings? Like a pen plotter that you could plonk down on paper in the wild and press a button and have it quickly draw out something?
