it’s a visual created many years ago that I had done in negative during my debut in linocut of a little messy way.
I do it now in a larger format with better control of my hand.

Transfer of design on lino plate, ready and in the process of drying. I use a particularly efficient method with the help of a laser printer, adhesive paper (just the smooth support) and medium liquitex. this allows me to keep the grain of pigment near the accuracy of the composition.

Here's the first test print of the Scandi Forest tree decorations!

William thinks the stag sticks out too much and suggests a green so I might try that out.

Anyway these are supposed to be wintery colours. What do you think?

Also each one is printed on pine and on maple. I think we've pretty much decided maple is better because pine has quite strong markings.

I will be testing out the hanging of them today too.

Look out for the adjusted colours!

Printed almost exactly one year ago, Rooftops of St. Ives is definitely one of my favourite prints.

It is of rooftops, which I love. It is quite abstract. It features lots of natural media mark making. It is in blue, turquoise and yellow. It ticks all the boxes for me!

I need to print more of the edition though. I do have the ink and the paper but it's quite a scary print to make. Quite hard to print.

My very first screenprint

Made in 2014, this was my first screenprint. And I didn't make it easy for myself! It is five colours.

Unfortunately I didn't really know the technique, I used a red bladed squeegee (the softest, used for fabric printing) and the inks were really rubbish and runny. The end result was that the colours splurged through the screen and went everywhere.

Also the blue screen (the sky with the snow) started to degrade so I had to repair it with filler.

All in all it was a bit of a disaster. I have only a couple of good ones like this, the rest are all terrible.

I suppose one day I could print it again!

Upturned Boats has now been photographed properly and is available in my shop!

It is a six colour screenprint made entirely from hand made stencils using paper cuts, brush strokes, pencil and ink pen marks.

By its nature, nothing lines up perfectly! Because I cut everything out by hand there are small gaps and overlaps but this adds to the enjoyment of the print I think.

It is a limited edition of 50 and is numbered and signed by me.

The size of the paper is 35cm x 47cm approximately. The artwork size is 21cm x 30cm approximately.

It's printed in six colours on Fabriano 5 210gsm printing paper.

Editioning is done! Upturned Boats is finished. I think I got about 27 good ones.

Warmer yellow, lighter blue, lighter dark grey. I think it all works well.

Nothing lines up! It was great fun to make and I will take all this learning going foward. This is not the end of me making stencils but just the beginning.

Here's my final Harbour Walls print. Yes I gave it a name. I think this is a pretty accurate representation of the colours.

There are 24 in the edition and it will be available in my shop later today.

It's easily my most ambitious print to date, in fact my next few will be half the number of layers. My son kept telling me that 12 layers was too many and I should reduce them.

The Scandi Forest tea towels are back in stock!

We have 15 of the Icy Blue and 22 of the Raspberry. Printing this tea towel has made me realise I can print tea towels again! I had got nervous about doing them.

We will print more in the future but we want to have enough for the Autumn fairs.

I am working on the tree decorations which is exciting. A set of six Scandi animals hand printed onto laser cut wood. Each one will be a different colour.

But today I am getting on with my Harbour Abstract, printing it at last. It should be fun to print and I cannot wait to see it completed.

I promised to keep posting work in progress, so here are my upturned boats in progress. I am actually planning out at least some of the print on the computer before I try and make the stencils by hand.

It's a question of what can be positive and what can be negative. Pencil marks and brush strokes cannot be negative (obviously) but paper cuts can be, I guess. Maybe I've made this too hard for myself!

I have no idea how to make multiple layers accurate. I mean, obviously if you cut a boat out of paper then do do have a perfect positive and negative shape.

Here's something I never printed and never had printed. It was orginally going to be a very long screenprint but I realised it was not going to be easy to print or cost effective.

So I got a price to have it digially printed and folded into a concertina. But I never got it made as it was expensive and we couldn't afford it and I thought it would have limited appeal.

It is of our journey to Cornwall along the A303 and includes Stonehenge, Bovey Tracey, Mousehole and St Ives.

Here is the garland as it is looking. I am now putting it into an A3 layout and doing a cutter for it.

I'm trying to keep the boats large and the other elements quite large, the shell and starfish will be smaller but overall the elements will be roughly the same size (not like my other garlands).

So I have decided to share with you the Coastal Garland as it develops over the next few days!

Here are the basic shapes, I imagine them to be paper cuts because one day they will be paper cuts.

I decide what I will do with each illustration in terms of the colour shapes, the natural media detailing and the textures. In this case I am putting some shading onto each one.

Today I will do the rest of the "paper cut" work and then over the weekend I will take these into Photoshop and do all the natural media mark making and details.

I will need to lay these out on an A3 sheet and try and get their relative sizes right because when I do the natural media I can't really scale them up and down. So they need to be roughly the right size.

These aren't necessarily the right objects either...I may add some different ones. The only thing is I need to finish it by next week as the pressure is on for Bovey!

You may have noticed that the octopus and ice cream from my long sold out Catch of the Day print makes a slight return.

One of the two types of printmaking I do is linocut.

The other is screenprinting.

I like linocut for the spontenaity, for the fact that you can very quickly set up and print something. I do enjoy carving the lino to a degree.

I like screenprinting for different reasons. It appeals to me as an art form; I enjoy experimenting with screenprinting and natural media.

About a year ago I printed the final two Take Flight birds. This is the goldfinch.

They are all flying (except for the magpie which is looking for things). I tried to show them in their natural environments.

They are screenprinted and lino printed. The colours are screenprinted and the black is lino printed.
