  3. And Lula da Silva wins! Fending off "a right-wing movement led by Flávio Bolsonaro."

So the trend continues. A very close race though! "Lula received 51.8 percent of the vote, versus 48.2 percent for Flávio Bolsonaro, with 99.9 percent of the ballots counted, according to official preliminary results."

  4. My wife and I saw You can See Everything last night, and it's a great Movie and a terrible documentary. Definitely worth watching, I enjoyed it a lot even though I find it kind of nihilistically post-modern in how it ignores (and obscures when convenient) the Facts that were available

The #formula1 Grand Prix at the #usgp wasn't all that interesting to watch and the #motogp grand prix at #australiangp was cancelled due to weather.

but the motogp sprint race was excellent! unfortunate crash for Martin, though. that was a bad crash.

  8. There were some probs with "1984" -- Orwell was engaged in dying, it didn't make for a sunny outlook; also some time pressure there.
The Thought Police needed a helicopter to see in your windows; everyone didn't carry a device that can expose everything your mind wants to engage with; the proles indeed wouldn't be so contented & clueless (not all of them) ...
I used to think, "They had nothing to make you see what isn't there"
    Oh that problem's overcome now.

But people at last would think, "Really life's hard enough, why will we make an effort to bring children into this wretchedness & slavery?"
    ...Seems to be happening?

A form of words you used to hear around East San Jose:
"This shit can no longer be going on"

  10. Wow that was slower than last time.

I'm honestly a little sad about that. I had thought it was only a matter of patience and my 10K time would get back under an hour. Now it seems like I might have to *work* at it? Ew.

On the bright side, the hottest of the hot shirtless guys was just ridiculous today. I was sad that I couldn't share him with Tom.

It was cool, though, to walk up the creek a ways to see parts of the forest the water had kept from me.

  13. The Rehersal season 2 was pretty great. Nathan fielder going deep into aviation safety (with a seemingly unlimited budget) and so much else.

I’d ignored it because I thought the original season crossed too much into making fun of the regular people he uses. He briefly got close for me a couple times in S2, but I was mostly fine with how they portrayed the walk-in cast.

  16. I had a close friend who is really shitty about nonbinary people and has been for years, we had a bit of a falling out after I called him out on it regarding a friend of ours (not even myself, though he was really shitty to me when I came out to him too) for refusing to use their preferred pronouns and even mocking the entire concept of not being male or female. After that, we just quit talking regularly and eventually I built up enough self-respect that I quietly blocked him on social media without saying a word and purposefully did not give him my new phone number when I switched carriers.

Expelling toxic people who don't accept you for who and what you are is ALWAYS the right choice. If their heart changes later, you can reconsider, but until then you don't need to subject yourself to fuckheads.

The absolute number of perfect solves is about the same, though, which suggests this is probably because mostly advanced solvers are showing up today, and beginners are sitting out.

  21. The Brain Is Not Designed for Thinking

“As the cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham has written: ‘Contrary to popular belief, the brain is not designed for thinking. It’s designed to save you from having to think.’ Because the brain is naturally inclined to avoid effortful thinking and to rely instead on familiar patterns, complete freedom tends to lead to unoriginal ideas, simply repeating what is known. Constraints push the brain beyond its default tendencies, forcing it to engage in deeper problem-solving. Total freedom, then, is the enemy of creativity, and constraint its companion.” — David Epstein, Inside the Box

  22. 🐙💜 Sunday Philosophy with Leslie: Jacques Lacan, or Why Your Brain Cannot Be Trusted to Write Its Own User Manual

It is Sunday. Naturally, I have opinions about a French psychoanalyst who thought Freud had left a few things insufficiently complicated. And if this is sufficiently complicated, it means: not complicated enough... ;)

Jacques Lacan asks an inconvenient question: what if the self you know so well is partly an elaborate construction involving language, other people, social expectations, and desires you cannot entirely explain?

Naturally, I thought I could address that in a reasonably short article.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA.

We now have the Imaginary, the Symbolic, the Real, the mirror stage, the big Other, objet petit a, jouissance, the phallus (no, not that straightforwardly), and enough theoretical knots to keep an entire seminar room busy until the heat death of the universe.

Along the way, we shall investigate why we want what we want, how we become who we think we are, what capitalism does with our dissatisfaction, and why Lacan is neither a universal answer to everything nor someone we should simply dismiss because his prose occasionally appears to have been translated from French into Lacan.

There are also feminist and queer questions, a few necessary disagreements, and some reminders that psychoanalysis cannot replace material politics. You cannot interpret your way out of poverty, and no amount of unconscious desire will pay the bloody rent.

This is your Sunday reminder that philosophy is not about collecting dead men like Pokémon. It is about thinking critically, questioning the categories we inherit, and finding ideas that might help us change the world.

The article got out of hand. The full text is therefore available only at the link below, because even an octopus has limits on how many tentacles it can devote to one Mastodon post.

  25. The OCD got me last night and I didn't go to bed until 2:30. Our new floodlights arrived yesterday and by the time I got everything installed it was 8pm. Then I thought I'd easily tie everything into the motion sensors in my cameras to detect people between 10pm to sunrise+15min and turn the lights on for 5 minutes then turn them off. It wasn't as easy as I thought but when I went to bed, they were working as I wanted.

So tired though. 🤦🏼‍♂️Now off to the bees.

    Have a good day!

  27. On Friday it was 14 years since my estranged mother died.

I keep mentally prodding myself, as though there’s something I should be feeling. But I don’t. Feel anything that is.

We had been estranged for some 14 years before that, so I don’t know why I’m expecting this ‘something’.

I tolerated a lot of misery for the sake of others, but once my child was born I couldn’t bear to think of them being contaminated by any of it. So that was that.

I think I gained more than I lost. Though at times I still long for a(n unrealistic) family life. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then I get annoyed with myself for wasting time thinking/wanting what I haven’t had instead of appreciating and making the best of what I do have.

  28. Why needs keepassxc on Linux suddenly write access to the password file ?
I share it with my wife and she can read it but can't write to it. I thought keepassxc needs to write it to store the path to the keyfile.
    But it does not.
keepassxc changes the owner of the file from me to her (the directory is writable for both) and changes the date of the file to the current date and time.
Why and in which version was that implemented ?
I replaced the keyfile by the real one.
Changed the permision to the directory to 750. This won't happen, again.
