Looking at the photos I've taken with my DSLR over the last months, I kinda want to get back into photography. At least I want to do a bit of editing, but I'm still having a hard time with the ever-overpowered, ever-changing unintuitive Darktable. One option would probably be, since my camera is old anyway, to fix it to an old version. I could also use a different program. What do y'all use for photo editing / raw conversion on Linux?

Review: Darktable’s AI noise reduction versus Lightroom, ON1, Topaz

Darktable has been seen by many as the leading alternative to Adobe’s Lightroom Classic.

But for for those trying to get away from the company’s shakedown subscription plan, the lack of AI tools for masking and noise reduction have been dealbreakers.

Until now.

The latest release of Darktable now includes AI tools for masking and, most importantly, denoising. This is a significant development, but will it be enough for people looking for the exit ramp from the Adobe ecosystem?

Previous versions of Darktable had denoise options, but they usually softened the detail in the image as well.

I’ve put it to the test against some of the more popular programs — Lightroom Classic, ON1 NoNoise AI and Topaz Photo AI, and let’s see how it fares.

First, here is the test shot, straight out of camera. In the comparison photos, the only adjustments made have been noise reduction.

This was shot at ISO 12,800, which is the highest ISO I can shoot on my camera and still salvage the image in Lightroom’s denoising software.

And here is Darktable in a side-by side comparison with the original.

As you can see, the Darktable appears to have cleaned up much of the noise, with minimal damage to the details in the photo.

And let’s look at it in comparison with some of the other AI noise reducers on the market.

As you can see, Darktable’s results are not bad. It doesn’t quite compare with Lightroom or the other commercial editing software, but if you’re on a budget, the results are acceptable.

When it comes to masking, Darktable is not as good, as it caught sky in the branch I selected with the masking tool. But that is likely to be fixed in future releases.

A few weeks ago I started shifting my #darktable config to the same external SSD that my photos are on, so that I can work on them on both my laptops (macOS and Linux) and main PC depending on where I am.

Fast forward to last week, when I left the SSD plugged into my main PC overnight with darktable running, and it crashed (the PC, not darktable) and corrupted the active, open darktable configuration files on the SSD. I have a lot of custom metadata set up for film scans as well as multiple workspaces for film, digital, and a slide scanning project - so it was a substantial configuration. The photos themselves are periodically backed up (and I still have the negatives which is what I use darktable for the most).

I worked with an LLM (this is one of the acceptable use cases for AI, IMO, as opposed to generating images and deepfakes all that that garbage) because I'm not a #bash expert and wanted a framework to work from/customize/learn from. This was the result - I'm posting it here in case anyone wants to use it, or has any ideas to make it better. Feel free to fork/clone if you like. Also open to ideas/suggestions. I tried to make it friendly enough that someone else can pick it up and run with it for their own use case.

The first script backs up the configuration to a separate location (and keeps 5 rotating backups) and then starts up darktable. The second script allows you to select and restore one of those backups. If you put them in a bin folder in your home directory you can just run them like other terminal commands.

I know that darktable also has a way to "check out" local copies, so maybe I should throw all these photos on a NAS (with a periodic offsite backup) or something, but this little SSD that I can take downstairs with me to work on my laptop while I watch TV with my wife has overall been a great, speedy solution - and a learning opportunity. Some of this will help me improve other simpler bash scripts I have/use.
